HE EA MAKAMAE A monthly publication by the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. SY 2014-15, Issue #9 HONOLULU, OAHU, HAWAII May, 2015 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Bill Lee, P.E. Thanks to Ken Beal of from Enpro Environmental for his talk on “ Indoor Air Quality – Moisture, Contaminants, and More -An overview of common Indoor Air Quality complaints and corrective actions” I hope we can do more meetings with Indoor Air Quality Association-Hawaii Chapter now that they are a part of ASHRAE. And also thanks to Steve Krivan of Hays Fluid Controls for his presentation on “Automatic Control Valves” for the do’s and don’ts portion of the program. I would like to encourage everyone to come to this month’s May meeting. We are going to 3 students from the University of Hawaii Student Branch present their HVAC class design project. Please come out and support our students. They are the future of our industry. I would like to have all the HVAC class alumni that had presented in past meetings to attend and support this year’s presenters. Since you know what it is like to present before an ASHRAE mtg. Well we are in the final stretch of the ASHRAE year – which will end in June. May has a lot of great things happening – May 7th is the refrigeration tour at Lanikai Brewery in Kailua – my MBA classmates have started a beer company and we have a chance to get an inside look at a brand new brewery. I’m sure this company is going to be a big success. May 14th is the last chapter meeting of the year and our Region X DRC Karine Leblanc will be visiting, May 19th YEA training continues at InSynergy engineering conference room – on water source heat pumps, and on May 21st is our golf tournament at Pearl country club. It is sure to be an exciting May. Again, I would like to highlight the behind the scenes people that keep our local ASHRAE chapter running. This month I would like to introduce our YEA (Young Engineers of ASHRAE) chairmen – Willie Diguc and Richard Miller. I’ve mentioned Willie in this newsletter before because he also co-chairs the programs committee. He is a young bright star in ASHRAE, and not too long ago was in the UH HVAC class giving his presentation to our members as a college senior in Prof. Ting’s class. Willie works for Oahu Plumbing and Sheetmetal. Richard works for VSI which represents various manufacturers and is very interested in helping save energy. Richard is a great teacher and volunteered to help with the YEA committee because he saw the need for the young engineers to be exposed to more technical training. The technical training that he has organized has been a resounding success and all who have attended have benefitted. Thanks Willie and Richard for all your hard work this year. See you all at the May mtg. His past jobs include Sales Executive, Strategic Sales Manager, Director of Solutions, and General Manager at Liebert Northwest. Matt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing from Ohio University, and his Masters of Business degree from Ashland University. His hobbies include vacationing in Hawaii and golf. Main Program: HVAC System Design for University of Chicago – New Educational Building. The May 2015 technical program will feature a presentation from the students from University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). The presentation will be a review of the students final design project that was submitted for their ME 417 Course in Applied Thermal Engineering. The student’s design is an adaptation of the 2015 ASHRAE Student Design Competition. Unlike other years, The 2014 Fall Semester of ME 417 course consisted of only 6 students, which formed a singular design team that worked together on the project. Three of them will make their final presentation on May 11, 2015. The purpose of the design project was to design an HVAC system for a newly constructed educational building on the University of Chicago campus. The building will be a 3 story classroom building that will also include spaces for administration faculty offices and computer labs to help accommodate expanding enrollment at the University. The design is intended to be dependable and economically viable for a 20 year life span. ASHRAE standards 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189.1 as well as the ASHRAE Handbook were used as guidelines for the design. A commercial software program, provided by MCE International, was used to calculate heating and cooling loads for the proposed building. These results were compared and validated using the “first cut” hand calculated estimate as taught by Professor Ting. The students reviewed many systems and zeroed‐in to two systems. The first system used chilled water/medium hot water services from central utilities plant of the University of Chicago and eliminated it. The second system utilized the packaged rooftop units. The third Page 5 system used its own dedicated chiller/boiler complete with its air distribution system utilizing air handlers/VAV boxes. The systems were compared using life cycle cost analysis, which included initial costs as well as operation and maintenance cost. In addition to the life cycle costs, other considerations included indoor air quality, energy conservation, energy performance and system selection. Due to the nature of the building, specific consideration were taken to accommodate the various activities and requirements of each room including but not limited to high people density classrooms, labs requiring high exhaust, and 24 hour computer labs. The process of analyzing the requirements, designing a system and selecting equipment was instrumental in the student’s level of understanding of HVAC systems. As each student was involved in the process, they learned not only about designing a HVAC system but also in working as a team and the importance of seeking out people with the knowledge to help with questions and difficulties. At the request of Professor Ting, Garret Lau of MCE International, Mofazzal Mir of InSynergy Engineering Inc., and, Rudolph J. Ritter of Trane Pacific generously offered their time and knowledge to the students. The students are grateful for their help and patience as they mentored and gave guidance over the course of the semester. Let’s present the UHM students, who will be presenting at the May 2015 technical program: Frankie Chan graduated from UHM as a Mechanical Engineer in December 2014. He was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Honolulu. As the only child of an immigrant family, Frankie decided at a young age to stay in Hawaii upon graduation, in order to give back what his parents have done for him. During his middle and high school years, he participated in many engineering competitions locally and internationally, such as the 1st robotics competition and VEX robotics competition. He continued to participate in competition during college. Along with his classmates during their Senior Year, Frankie competed in the Formula SAE Race Car competition in Lincoln, Nebraska. His favorite hobby would be traveling and photography. Yiyang Xiao is currently a Mechanical Engineering senior at UHM, and will be graduating in May 2015. He is currently an intern at Highway Division, State Department of Transportation. He also volunteered at planning branch of DAGS (Department of Accounting and General Service) for the past year. Upon graduation, Yiyang looks forward to practice his engineering in the HVAC industry as a consultant. His interests are swimming, badminton, fishing and watching movies. Page 6 Mary Mudrick will also be graduating with her Mechanical Engineering degree in May 2015. She is looking forward to sleeping again and having time for her two hobbies: travel and sewing. Her love of traveling led her to opportunities to spend a summer doing a physics research program at Montana State University as well as a summer in France studying renewable energy and project management. During her time in the UHM College of Engineering, she has worked on a Mars Robot as well as participating in the Formula SAE project in her senior year. Mary was born and raised on Maui and plans to stay in Hawaii to be close to her family.
