A favorite feature of the meeting is the revealing of the Best of the Best award winners. This issue of Called to Serve congratulates the 2014 winners. Best of the Best are awards that recognize service above and beyond the call of duty—one individual on each campus who deserves a special thank you. With 618 employees Shaun Smith (right) with RiverWoods resident on six campuses, and so many dedicated people, we struggle to and board member Robert S. Ryan choose just a few! Employees are nominated by their peers. Often, nominations are supported by residents and families as well. I am proud to work with the award winners and all of the nominees as these employees will help Albright take the next steps forward in our master plan. RiverWoods and Normandie Ridge have physical campus needs that will be addressed in the coming year. We will make capital improvements that complement our commitment to delivering the best care available for our residents. At Normandie Ridge we will reposition the common space and nurses’ station in the nursing care center, and in personal care, take the next leap from our success with the Serenity Garden to focus on a dedicated memory care center. At RiverWoods, we tackle the most aged and frail wings of the nursing care center with a replace and remodel plan that addresses the most critical needs in order to create more efficient neighborhoods. Your opinions and advice have helped shape these directions for the future of Normandie Ridge and RiverWoods. In the coming months you will have an opportunity to learn how you can financially support these projects and I know you will find some exciting opportunities in which to participate! Smith President and CEO On the cover... Making Connections Summer 2014 RiverWoods and Normandie Ridge are partnering with Gen–Connect to help seniors re-think technology. Classes are helping residents see how easy it is to use an iPad and discover ways they can experience increased independence through the use of applications (apps). Some of the featured apps include games to encourage brain fitness, tools for communicating with family and friends, books, magazines, and music. The classes are also open to non-residents. 3 Recent News A lbright is proud to welcome Keith S. Kuzio as its new Board Chair. Keith joined the Board in 2008 and shares his thoughts on his upcoming term: “My hope for the coming year is that I will continue to provide the strong, capable board leadership that Albright has enjoyed from its past chairs. My goal for the Board and management team is to maintain agility, anticipate ongoing transformative changes in healthcare delivery, and lead and inspire our dedicated employees to be proactively engaged so that we continue to achieve high-quality services for our residents and participants. We see this agility demonstrated in the master plan implementation at Normandie Ridge and RiverWoods. Planned projects will provide state of-the-art facilities on both campuses in a multiyear, phased construction approach that allows for adjustments to designs and scale of projects as changes occur in the senior living environment. As the LIFE programs graduate from start-up operations, the same commitment to proactive management is necessary to ensure that each program continues to efficiently serve the needs of populations in three diverse communities. With the entire team we will see these programs strengthened in ways that support Albright’s mission for abundant living.” Keith Kuzio is President and CEO of Larson Design Group. 4 Albright Care Services Welcomes New Board Members Howard Berthold, Jr., PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Lycoming College, Williamsport, where he taught for 35 years and served as Department Chair for 20 years. Howard is a faculty member with the Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning and has taught classes at RiverWoods. Robert S. Ryan is a RiverWoods resident. He is a retired partner of the Philadelphia-based law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath. He served as chair of the Council of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society from 1984-1988. Bob currently serves on the Slifer House Museum Advisory Board. The Rev. Keith Schmuck serves as the senior pastor of Winterstown UMC in the York District of the Susquehanna Conference and serves on the York District Board of Ordained Ministry. Keith began his path to ministry while a student in college and has been serving in pastoral ministry for 43 years. Gretchen Wagoner is a registered nurse, retired after sixteen years with SUN Home Health and Hospice, where she served as the Director of Quality Improvement. Previously she worked at Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport. Gretchen is a member of the Board of the Friends of the Rudy Gelnett Library in Selinsgrove. Anne Zerbe practices employment law at the CGA Law Firm in York. She is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and holds an AV Preeminent® peer review rating by Martindale-Hubbell®. Leadership York recently awarded Anne Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for community service. Anne formerly served on the Normandie Ridge Advisory Committee. AlbrightCare.org Warrior Run Manor Celebrates 30 Years On May 2, Warrior Run Manor in Watsontown celebrated 30 years of serving seniors and disabled adults. During the open house the community room was dedicated to longtime board president James Stahlnecker. Also honored were 30-year residents Ruth Bull and Florence Meckley. Teamwork Reinforces Quality at Albright LIFE expanded role, Matt is responsible for the executive oversight and management of LIFE Lancaster, LIFE Lebanon, and LIFE Lycoming/Clinton in Williamsport. “Consistent job responsibilities and processes allow information gained at one site to be leveraged across all locations,” explains Matt. “We’re creating a model with more defined roles and operations to facilitate the sharing of resources.” Matthew Hazen John McDonough O ne of the biggest challenges facing a multisite organization like Albright Care Services is ensuring consistent high quality at each location— consistent practices, consistent responsibilities, and above all, consistent exceptional care. Albright operates three LIFE sites—one each in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Williamsport. LIFE is an acronym for Living Independently for Elders and is an all-inclusive program of care for the elderly. A significant element of LIFE is the opportunity for participants to remain living in the place they call home, for as long as it is safe. LIFE Lycoming is our oldest site, having celebrated its sixth anniversary this past summer. LIFE Lebanon is our youngest site, which will have been open three years in the fall of 2014. While each of the programs serves a diverse community of families and has its own independent staffing, all three now enjoy the managerial oversight of a regional team of professionals. Matthew Hazen was recently promoted to Regional Executive Director of LIFE Programs. Previously he was the Executive Director at LIFE Lancaster. In his newly Summer 2014 John McDonough was recently promoted to Associate Director of LIFE Programs and Operations. John earned his nursing home administrator’s license earlier this year. In his new role, John will provide organizational support to the Chief Operating Officer and assist with the management and operation of the LIFE programs in coordination with the Regional Director. Previously John was the Director of Census Development for Albright Care Services. John will continue to oversee census development, marketing and sales efforts. “As our programs continue to grow, we’re refining how we think about the provision of care throughout the organization,” says John. “It is essential that our service offerings correspond with the needs of our community and that we remain fiscally responsible.” John and Matt working together offer a strategy to share best practice and delivery of care models among the LIFE sites, ensuring exceptional care for all participants. Peter Geschwindner as Chaplain. Many of you know Peter’s long and successful history with Albright. Peter was elected to the Albright Care Services Board of Trustees in 1992. He served as Board Chair from 1995-1998, and then left the Board in 1999 to become Chaplain at RiverWoods. In 2001, he was promoted to Vice President for Fund Development, a position he held for 10 years. After becoming Vice President of Mission Enhancement early in 2011, Peter felt a calling back to the local church and in July of that same year said goodbye to Albright, accepting an appointment as pastor of Tunkhannock UMC. A 1974 graduate of Albright College in Reading, PA, and a 1978 graduate of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL, Peter was ordained Deacon in 1977 and Elder in 1979 in The United Methodist Church. When asked what drew him back to RiverWoods he replied, “I have cherished the mission and ministry of this organization from the first time I visited here nearly 30 years ago. And I’ve always said that I have a personal investment in our maintaining the highest level of care because I fully expect and prayerfully hope that one day I will be a resident here!” There are many residents and staff at RiverWoods who remember Peter’s early connections with Albright. As the announcement circulated that he was returning to RiverWoods, resident Phyllis Close commented, “It isn’t just folks saying, ‘Did you hear the news?’ (about Peter coming back). They are saying, ‘Did you hear the GOOD news?!’” We welcome back our good friend and colleague Peter Geschwindner and look forward to his ministry among us! RiverWoods resident Roberta Warntz with Chaplain Peter. Slifer House Museum’s Beauty Restored Slifer House Museum is undergoing some facade renovations. Pictured here are the museum’s original front doors, after restoration. Donald Edwards, Jr., a local historical woodworking expert, carefully sanded, stained, and varnished the doors, which date back to 1860. Also, inside the first floor of the museum in the three formal rooms, volunteers Pamela Mauger, Kristin Morrow, and Char Gray have carefully restored the antique window treatments, which include lace and organza. Replacement valances were created by Eberharts of Lewisburg. Wallpaper repairs are scheduled to be undertaken this summer and fall. Albright Recognizes Board Members for Years of Service At the Annual Meeting of Albright Care Services, volunteer board members were recognized for a combined 26 years of service. Leaving the board are Scott Peterson, who led the board as Chair for the past two years; Rev. Emerson Abram, who served as the resident representative for RiverWoods, and Rev. John Betlyon, who completed his third three-year term. Keith Kuzio was recognized for completing his second term and welcomed into the position of Board Chair. Employees Participate in United Way Campaign Albright LIFE Lancaster Celebrates Five Years of Serving Seniors RiverWoods employees recently participated in the United Way Workplace Campaign. Accepting a check for $4,227.50 is Keri Albright (below left), President and CEO, Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way. Presenting the check is Nea Brown, Executive Director (center), and Sue Jamison (right), Annual Fund Director, RiverWoods Senior Living Community. On October 30, 2013, Albright LIFE Lancaster participants, family members, staff and community celebrated five years of service to seniors in Lancaster County. Participants Betty Kauffman and Luz Mercado have attended the program for the entire five years and joined Matt Hazen, Regional Director, for a re-creation of the ribbon-cutting ceremony that took place during the grand opening. Both participants spoke about the benefits they’ve received, such as exceptional medical care and restorative therapy. Their families added their appreciation for the care and friendship provided at Albright LIFE. Summer 2014 7 The Robert L. and Helen F. Stanton Dining & Community Room V alentine’s Day 2014 was a day to remember two very special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stanton. Bob and Helen were longtime residents of RiverWoods. They were generous, kind and compassionate. Bob passed away in January 2013 following Helen’s death six years earlier. It was a loss of immense proportion not only to the RiverWoods family but the larger community as well. The Robert L. and Helen F. Stanton Dining and Community Room. Dedicated in honor and memory of Helen Fairchild Stanton and Robert Lowry Stanton. Former residents, great friends to many and generous supporters of RiverWoods, Mr. and Mrs. Stanton’s kindness and compassion will be remembered always. 8 The Stantons believed in RiverWoods, supporting its mission to serve the needs of others. During their lifetime they created several charitable gift annuities with RiverWoods as the beneficiary. Bob and Helen enjoyed many years of consecutive, equal annuity payments. After Bob’s death, it was decided that this most important gift, the annuity residual, would do the most good if used to benefit the Stantons’ friends and neighbors at RiverWoods through support of the Riverview Manor Dining and Community Room. On February 14, 2014, residents, friends and family gathered for the dedication of the Robert L. and Helen F. Stanton Dining and Community Room. The Stanton Dining Room, located near the Riverview Manor entrance, features a country kitchen, an all season room with natural lighting, a private dining space that seats eight comfortably, a fireplace lounge, two televisions, and a coffee and snack bar. Each was honored with special recognition for achieving excellence in demonstrating the mission of Albright each day in her service to RiverWoods, Normandie Ridge, Albright LIFE, Warrior Run Manor, the Central Office and Pharmacy. In addition, the Seneca S. Foote Servant Leadership Award was given to an employee who exemplifies compassion, moral authority and a collaborative work style. “Every job is important in a senior living community.” That’s what longtime employee Liz Fake said many years ago to Amy Young, who worked at Normandie Ridge as an intern. Now the Executive Director, Amy recalls the impact that statement had on her own recognition of the variety of important jobs occurring daily on the campus. Liz, a housekeeper in her 21st year, continues to give her very best, often arriving at work early enough to share a cup of coffee with residents, knowing that a personal connection helps residents feel more at home. Congratulations Liz on your Best of the Best award! 10 Valerie Morris, Clinical Coordinator for Riverview Manor on the RiverWoods Campus, presented the Best of the Best to Bobbi Ralston, personal care aide and medical technician. Bobbi is nicknamed ‘MacGyver’ in recognition of her ability to fix just about anything. In her remarks, Val shared that one of the residents in Bobbi’s care said, “Bobbi is always willing to do whatever we need, when we need it. Introducing the Best of the Best at Albright LIFE, Regional LIFE Director Matt Hazen commented that Amber Ressel, lead program assistant at LIFE Lancaster, has helped to build the program to its current level of more than 90 participants. Amber is quick to see what needs to be done and say, ‘I’ll take care of it.’ She interacts with each participant in a way that shows she respects their wisdom, often asking their advice on how to do things well. “I do it to learn and to get a smile,” Amber shared, laughing. Well, we’re smiling too! Lead Billing Assistant Peg Haas received the Best of the Best award representing the Central Office/Pharmacy/Warrior Run Manor. John Blessing, Controller, spoke of Peg’s expertise with regard to her relationships: “Peg treats residents and staff with dignity and respect, and is an excellent teacher.” And staff are often the beneficiaries of her baking talents, as she frequently brings in homemade treats. Thank you, Peg!! Peg began working on the RiverWoods campus while still a high school student. Over the years she has held various positions in dietary and in the central office billing department. This year’s Seneca S. Foote Servant Leadership award was given to Dawn Orzehowski, sales and marketing director for RiverWoods. Executive Director of RiverWoods Nea Brown noted that Dawn has worked at RiverWoods for nine years and is a compassionate leader who goes the extra mile to ensure the best quality of life for residents of RiverWoods. In receiving the award, Dawn joked, “I always have a lot to say, but today, I’m speechless!” Congratulations to all of our 2014 award recipients! Nominated by employees at Normandie Ridge and Albright Care Services, the Serenity Garden Committee was among some of the most inspiring recipients of annual awards given to dedicated employees, committed volunteers and loyal donors from senior living communities all across Pennsylvania. 12 LeadingAge PA seeks to advance leadership in aging through innovation. Together we create practices that transform how we serve our aging population. We develop services that meet older adults’ needs and preferences. And we advocate to advance the interests of the aging consumer. The Serenity Garden was the unique vision of a group of residents who recognized the need for outdoor space that could be enjoyed by all members of the Normandie Ridge family. The Serenity Garden Planning Committee includes Bruce Bupp, Marilyn Crawford, Don Dubiel, Ronnie Ehrhart, George Foley, Bob Peel, and Tom Scarborough, all residents of Normandie Ridge. These volunteers have embraced our mission—to encourage abundant living by anticipating and responding to the needs of the aging and frail. They believe in Normandie Ridge and support the shared vision of LeadingAge PA to enhance the field of aging services. They have gone above and beyond in their volunteerism, and their efforts are enhancing the everyday life experiences of their neighbors. Our mission is to care for the senior population in the communities in which we operate facilities in Pennsylvania. In particular, we strive to meet the housing and healthcare needs of the aging and frail in ways that help seniors age gracefully and with dignity. Albright operates two independent senior living communities with a full continuum of care— RiverWoods in Lewisburg and Normandie Ridge in York. Albright operates LIFE (Living Independently for Elders) programs, which provide health, social and spiritual day care in three communities—Lancaster, Lebanon and Williamsport. Albright also manages Warrior Run Manor in Watsontown, a HUD housing complex for the disabled and elderly. Albright Care Services provides housing and healthcare services for more than 1,200 seniors in seven counties.
