X Games: The Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks meet
again tonight at Shaw Park in Winnipeg’s last home exhibition game
of 2015... Following their workout tomorrow afternoon, the Goldeyes
will depart for Kansas City, where they will meet the T-Bones for three
games next weekend... Winnipeg’s exhibition schedule concludes next
Tuesday in Wichita against the Wingnuts.
Shaw Park Slugfest: The Goldeyes and RedHawks battled for more
than three-and-a-half hours last night with the Goldeyes falling just
short 13-11... The Goldeyes trailed 13-3 going into the bottom of the
eighth inning, but rallied with seven runs, including a grand slam from
Josh Mazzola... Casio Grider was a perfect 3-for-3, drove in a run and
scored twice, including from second base on a wild pitch... Winnipeg’s
pitching staff gave up 13 runs on 15 hits, but Raul Rivera was a bright
spot, allowing no runs and striking out two RedHawks in two innings
of work.
Today’s Starting Pitcher: Canadian Rob Nixon will start tonight’s
game for the Goldeyes... He was signed this season after playing in
the Cleveland Indians system, including parts of the last two seasons
at Class AA Akron.
Early Hitters: Through the first two games of the pre-season, Josh
Mazzola leads the Goldeyes with four hits and is the only Goldeyes
player to hit a home run... Rookie outfielder Brady Wilson is 2-for-4
with three walks in the two games. Both of Wilson’s hits have been
triples and he’s reached base in five of seven plate appearances.
Canadian Content: The CRTC will be happy to know that there are
three Canadian arms looking for a role on the Goldeyes pitching staff
this spring... Rob Nixon is looking land a spot in the starting rotation,
while returnee Taylor Bratton and newcomer Jon Fitzsimmons are
looking for a role in the bullpen... All three hurlers hail from Ontario...
Additionally, transplanted Californian Brendan Lafferty now makes his
home in Winnipeg.
Staff Intact: For the second consecutive season, the Goldeyes
coaching staff remains intact from the previous season, as hitting
coach Tom Vaeth and pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea return with
manager Rick Forney... Vaeth has been with the organization since
2003, while Vermilyea returned to the organization in 2013 after
serving as the team’s closer in 2011.
On the Airwaves: Steve Schuster returns as the Voice of the
Goldeyes after taking over the headset last season from longtime
voice Paul Edmonds... All Goldeyes games, including the exhibition
games, will be broadcast on Jewel 101, which can be found at 100.7
FM, or online at www.jewel101.com.
