Happy 239th Birthday America!
Did you know New York City has the biggest fireworks
display in the United States and that three U.S. presidents
died on July 4th? Yes, Macy’s 4th of July Spectacular
sets off 75,000 pounds of pyrotechnics during is roughly
half hour show which is attended by 2 million people.
Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4th in
1826 and President James Monroe followed 5 years later in 1831.
The 4th of July has been a federal holiday in the United States since
1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations began in the 18th
century. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of
independence from Great Britain, and two days later its delegates adopted
the Declaration of Independence. From then on, July 4th has been
celebrated as the birth of American independence. Celebrations include
fireworks, readings of the Declaration of Independence, parades, concerts,
family gatherings and barbecues.
The 4th falls on a Saturday this year. Maybe as you go about your
Saturday morning routine, you might include a prayer of thanks for the freedom to worship and pray without persecution. Then at lunch time, you
might thank God for your family, the food your about to eat, and the blessings God has given that are too numerous to count. Later in the day you
might sing God Bless America, by Irving Berlin. You know the prayer-like
words, “God bless America, land that I love. Stand beside her and guide
her thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam, God Bless America, my home sweet
home...”

Lay Ministry Assistant
Happy 239th Birthday America! (cont. from page 1)
How do we pray for our country beyond this national holiday? The
apostle Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people, for
kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and
quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” Pray that more people grow to
know Jesus as Lord, and see the need for humility and repentance.
Remember to pray that our president and other government leaders move
with wisdom. Forgive those who have wronged us and pray for justice.
What if the 2 million spectators at the Macy’s 4th of July Spectacular came
for the fireworks and to pray for America?
Dear Lord, guide this nation by your Spirit. Give to your people the
blessings of health and harmony, but above all things, give us faith in you,
that this nation may bring glory to your name. In Jesus name we pray.
Amen.

Milestone Receptions
Each calendar year, we celebrate milestones with the youth of Good
Hope. We celebrate when 3rd graders have their 1st Communion, 8th
graders are confirmed, and when high school seniors graduate. We
gather after worship, we might enjoy a piece of cake, have a cup of coffee
or punch and congratulate them. God has only begun to work in the lives
of the young people that we celebrate.
As we find ways to have fun this summer, please take time to pray for
new communicants: Brennan Gorby, Angelina Nespeca, Katie Biggs,
Benjamin Polonus, Willy Rankin; new confirmands: Kassie Williamson,
Sydney Fike, Katie Reilly, Daniel Polonus, Leslie Summers, Isabella
Nordquist, Molly May; and new graduates: Mark Jenkins, Matt Stark,
Alyssa Halas, Matthew May, Kris Anderson, and Rebecca Adams. We
receive these young people again, and again, and again as part of our
church family. We see them grow in years, and pray that they mature
in faith.
If you are able and would find joy in hosting any of these milestone
receptions in 2016, please contact Karen Biggs. It has been a while since
a Hospitality Team has been put together. If you and few others can serve
together, please leave a message in Karen’s mailbox, send her an email,
or put your name down on the sheet in the Gathering Room.

Women’s Fall Retreat
Lavender Springs Spa is coming! This spiritually nourishing spathemed women’s retreat uncovers new insights from the book of Psalms,
discovering and studying the different kinds of songs, poems, and psalms
that have inspired people for centuries. You'll learn how the Psalms help
us share our feelings, disappointments, celebrations, and doubts with a
truly great listener: God. And you’ll leave with a fresh approach to prayer
that will grow your faith throughout the months to come.
This one day women’s retreat will take place on Saturday, October 3rd
from 8:30 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided
along with worshiping, praying, bible study, service and of course, a time
to pamper ourselves and relax in the Lord’s presence.
Due to the number of materials needed to be ordered and purchased,
a strict registration deadline of August 30th must be enforced. The cost is
only $45. Payment can be made payable to Good Hope with “Women’s
Retreat” marked on the memo line. Please give to Ginny Eddy or Cathi
Koehler to guarantee your spot. Look for the sign-up sheet along the back
wall in the Gathering Room.
Enjoy a wonderful, relaxing,
rejuvenating, thought provoking day!
Allow God’s Holy Spirit to work in
each of us by coming to Lavender

Thank You!
Dear children,
Thank you so very much
for the gift you sent of $780.
We will use your gift to help
children in Asia attend primary
schools with our Bridge of
Hope program. Thank you for
your heart in giving this gift to
help our missionaries tell
others about Jesus. You are a
great blessing to us.
When the little boy gave
his lunch to Jesus in the Bible
story, he never imagined what
Jesus could do with just five
loaves and two fishes. How
excited he must have been to
see the miracle that followed!
Today, as we all pray for
the unreached multitudes of
Asia and give our gifts toward
reaching the lost world, we too
have no idea what Jesus is
going to do with them! I
believe we will be just as
surprised in eternity as the little
boy was when his lunch fed
5,000 people. Life becomes
exciting when we realize that
we serve a God with whom all
things are possible.
May the Lord bless you,
and use your life for telling
those around you about the
love of Jesus.
Sincerely in Christ,
K.P. Yohannan, President

God Provides a Helper
(there is a blessing in both giving and receiving Help)
Scripture of the
Month
As I write this article, we are in the middle of our week of Vacation
Bible School. I want to thank Ginny Eddy, and every helper, for this
year’s amazing program. The huge MOUNTAIN in the sanctuary defies
description. The PRAYER IGLOO and PRAYER ROOM are truly a
blessing. The Sherpa Guides (crew leaders) are sensitive to the
children, encouraging and involved. I’ve had plenty of great help in the
Bible Adventure room from Daniel Polonus, his friend Josh, and others
as well. I know there are many others helping in other areas, such as
registration, snacks, crafts, games, the video cinema, and others.
Ginny sent out the following email to all the team members on
Wednesday morning:
The children are absolutely loving the program and that is
because the Lord is working in each and every one of us. I’m
actually feeling His presence in the church and seeing the Holy
Spirit at work in you and the children attending. It is becoming
contagious! Keep up the GREAT work!
God has blessed us many helpers this week, but the most
important Helper is the Holy Spirit.
Without the Holy Spirit, who is THE Helper, all our efforts would fall
on deaf ears or soon be forgotten. The Holy Spirit breathes life into the
work we do and He implants the lessons we teach from His Word, deep
into the hearts of the children and causes those seeds to grow.
Actually, this is true for all our work. Without the Holy Spirit at work, our
efforts are only busyness.
The Hebrew word for “helper” is “ezer”, and it is found 21 times in
the Old Testament. (2 times “ezer” refers to Eve, the wife of Adam, 3
times it refers to a military leader and 16 times God is spoken of as our
“ezer” our Helper. The Hebrew word “ezer” comes from two root words
that mean 1) to rescue or save and 2) strength. In Exodus 18:4, Moses
calls one of his sons Eliezer, which means, “My God is My Helper”.
Moses didn't name his son that because God did his laundry, but
because God powerfully delivered him and the Israelites from the sword
of Pharaoh. Obviously, our “helper” is the one who comes alongside us
to strongly assist, deliver, rescue, and save.
A Word for July
&
the Pentecost Season
16
And I will ask the Father,
and He will give you another
Helper, that He may be with
you forever.
26
But the Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will
send in My name, He will
teach you all things, and
bring to your remembrance
all that I said to you.
John 14:16, 26
_____________________
The “Scripture of the Month”
can be used in many ways:


The Greek word for “helper” is “paraclete” and it originally meant,
“called to one’s side.” In English versions of the New Testament it is
variously translated as helper, counselor, advocate, comforter. Jesus
speaks of “another” Helper because the “paraclete” is, in reality, the
Spirit of Jesus, who comes to live within those who believe.

The Lord is our Helper. The Holy Spirit is our Helper - the one to
stand strongly beside us to deliver, comfort, rescue, lead, and teach us.
God stands with us in every situation to be our strong ally. As the writer
of Hebrews says (in 13:6) “So that we confidently say, ‘the Lord is my
helper, I will not be afraid. What shall man do to me?’”

May the Lord be our helper and watch between you and me while
we are apart and as I recover from surgery.

Good Hope
Lutheran Church
has served the
Boardman and
Greater Youngstown communities
for over 80 years proclaiming the message of Jesus, supporting
local ministries, and sharing His hope and love with all.
Good Hope has recently voted to partner with the NALC,
uniting more than 140,000 Lutherans in more than 370 congregations across North America. The NALC embodies the theological
center of Lutheranism in North America.
The NALC is a church family committed to the authority
of the Bible as the inspired Word of God. In keeping with the
Lutheran Confessions, we believe all doctrines should and must
be judged by the teaching of Scripture.
The NALC has embraced four core values which shape our
common life: Christ-Centered, Mission-Driven, TraditionallyGrounded, and Congregationally-Focused. We are a church
centered on the unique Gospel of Jesus Christ, animated by
missions and evangelism, grounded in the 2,000 year tradition of
Christian faith, and organized chiefly to serve our congregations.
The Good News of Good Hope is published monthly for
