Monday, March 30, 2015 - Hope Lutheran Christian

monday note
March 30th, 2015
Dear Parents, Students, and Friends of Hope,
Easter Excitement!
In my living room hangs a special painting by a
congregational member from First Lutheran Church
in Kelowna. It was given to me after teaching
several years at their school. The watercolour
depicts Knox Mountain overlooking Okanagan Lake
and is a special reminder to me of Easter. Each year
before the sun rose the worship leadership would
haul amps and musical instruments up the mountain
in preparation for the Easter sunrise service. I'll
never forget helping my husband bring up his
keyboard, lawn chairs, and our three little boys
bundled in their winter jackets up the hillside to prepare for what would be the most amazing
sunrise.
As the sun crested the horizon and lit up the sky, it was as if the entire earth rejoiced and
proclaimed the majesty of our God. The warmth of the sun and the combined voices of the
congregation was a mountain top experience of worship that will be forever imprinted in my
mind.
I can't help but share the good news of the grandeur of God who creates such beauty for our
delight in order to worship our risen Saviour and receive eternal hope. The experience of
witnessing the beauty of a new day reminds me of the newness we have in Jesus every day. As
we walk through the events of Holy Week (Jesus sharing the last supper with his disciples, His
trial, and His crucifixion on Good Friday) it is Easter that I long for. Experiencing the freedom
from sin that Christ earned for us on the cross, and in his resurrection on Easter morn is what fills
me with joy and peace. It is the "sonshine" of Jesus’ deep love for us that brightens even our
darkest days and causes us to sing his praise.
Easter Joy,
Susan Eisner

be earning Parent Volunteer Hours! The Silent Auction Committee sent out letters requesting
donations from local businesses and is looking for support in
following up with the businesses. All it takes is a few minutes
to stop in, ask if the business received the letter, and if they
have an item or would like to attend the auction.
Business locations are separated into geographical areas to
avoid chasing all around the city. Please contact the Silent
Auction Committee at hlcssilentauction@gmail.com to see if
there are locations in your area.

The deadline to order yearbooks has now passed. If you are unsure whether or not

To ensure the best coverage of the year, there is now an image sharing website where you can
upload photographs directly to Hope's yearbook website: https://images.jostens.com/. The User

starts today, Monday March 30th after school from
3:00pm to 4:00pm. It will be open after school
from Monday to Thursday, April 2nd .
Each classroom will also have a wish list. We want to encourage
families to add new books to your child's classroom. Each teacher will
have a "book wish list" with identified titles of books from the book
fair that they believe would make great additions to their classroom
libraries. Ask your student’s teacher for their wish list for the books
they are excited about! Teacher wish lists will also be available at the
cashier.
For every transaction, you can fill out a ballot and enter into a draw
to win $25 in books for your family and another $25 in books for
your child's classroom. For further information or questions, please
contact Miss De Jong at kdjong@hopelcs.ca.
Payment methods include: cash, cheque, debit, Am. Ex., VISA, MC.

finals for our school winning team will be on Thursday, April 9th.
1st Annual Heritage Fair
The annual Heritage Fair has been moved to April 14th, 6:30 – 7:30 pm. The
purpose of a Heritage Fair is to encourage students to develop an increased
awareness and interest in Canadian history and heritage. It is similar to a science
fair model, but asks students to create a project about Canadian heritage, history, culture, or
geography. Students are able to research any aspect of Canadian history and heritage (a list of
possible topics will be provided) and to present the results of their efforts using any medium of
their choice. There are lots of amazing stories from across Canada as well as from right here in
our own community; the possibilities are endless! This is a wonderful opportunity to have your
child examine their own family background and to tell the story behind their own cultural
heritage. Judging of student projects will hopefully take place in the afternoon (during school
hours), and we are looking for individuals to judge student entries. If you are interested please
contact Miss Nast atenast@hopelcs.ca.
Leadership Teams
A variety of leadership teams for Kindergarten to grade 7 students are in place. It
is our prayer that as students lead their peers they will develop leadership skills
and encourage others in using the gifts that God has given to them.

ATHLETICS
Grade 8-12 Co-ed Volleyball
Unfortunately, the Gr.8-12 Co-ed Volleyball tournament has been
cancelled for this year and will not be rescheduled. If you had paid the $15
fee for the tournament you may use this money towards your spring sports
fee.
Spring Sign-Up Forms Due
Spring Athletic sign-up sheets are due tomorrow, March 31st. Please ensure all forms and fees are
sent in.
Gr.8-12 Badminton
HLCHS is excited to announce that on Friday last week a partnership with Shuttlesport
in Port Coquitlam was struck to host our High School badminton program. This is a
great opportunity for our High School athletes to practice in an excellent facility in the
local community. We are thankful for the beginning of this partnership and Shuttlesport’s
generosity!
Once all sign-up forms are collected, practice times will be released for each athletic level:
Bantam, Junior, and Senior. Currently, we have practice times booked for April 7, 8, 9, 14, 15,
16, 21, 22, and 23 from 2:50 – 3:50 pm.
Depending on the enrollment in the badminton program, we may see an increase to the original
$15 fee per athlete to cover the facility. If increased, this fee would not exceed an additional $10
per athlete.
Caption Contest
The Yearbook committee wants you to get as excited as they are about this year's book. That's
why they've created the Caption Contest. Here's how it works:
1. At the beginning of each month, a photograph will be posted in the Monday Note and on a
box in the Commons. On this box, you will also find entry forms.
2. Fill out a form and stick it in the box.
Anyone in the Hope community can enter as many captions as they want. In the interests of
saving paper, we ask that you use as few entry forms as possible. There is room for more than
one caption on the forms.
The winner of last month's caption contest is Mr.
Adam!
This is an amazing opportunity for EVERYONE to
contribute to the making of the 2014/15 Yearbook!
There are prizes for each month's winner. In
addition, all winners' names will be entered into a
draw at the end of the year for an additional prize.

Floor Hockey
The grade 6 and 7 girls and boys finished up their whirlwind
floor hockey season just before spring break. With only two
and a half weeks to prepare, both teams entered their
tournaments full of enthusiasm. The girls brought home the
second place trophy, while the boys placed fifth at their
tournament.
