These skills will also facilitate pathways to further learning. Safety is paramount. Students travel with the teacher to and from their home. They are encouraged to develop acceptable behaviour, locate bus/train stops, follow timetables and scan the MYKI card. Work opportunities, well-being and self-esteem are enhanced through this activity. Students who may not become independent travellers are given the experience of using public transport under the supervision of the teacher. A Code of Conduct contract is signed by the principal, teacher, parent and student prior to the student becoming independent and being issued with a student concession MYKI card. There are 24 VCAL students who are independent travellers. 27th April Student Support Group Meetings Aaron using the MYKI machine and Lara reading the bus timetable 10.00-6.00pm VCAL Art Program 28th April Student Support Group Meetings 10.00-6.00pm 12th May Curriculum Day NO students at school 23rd May Debutante Ball at Melrose Reception Centre In term 1 five VCAL students took part in the VCAL Art program. The students included Onur, Rustem, Brodie, Nicholas, and Phillip. The boys experimented with a range of traditional drawing media, including grey led pencils, watercolour pencils, fine liners, and charcoal, which was particularly fun because it was very messy. The focus throughout the term was portraiture, with the boys scouring countless past National Geographic journals dating back to 1966 in search of portrait photos to recreate. The main focus of the term, however, was the final project, which required the boys to photograph a teacher or student in the VCAL unit, and then recreate the photograph using their favourite drawing medium. All of the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience because they learned important new thinking and artistic skills, but mainly because it helped them develop better confidence in themselves.
