Contact hours and college credit will be issued only for
attendance at the entire inservice.

canceled or overbooked.
Lunch will be on your own for each workshop.
MCESC reserves the right to cancel workshops with fewer than 15

DefinedSTEM – eTextbook Grant

Intended audience: K-12 Teachers in Core Disciplines from Austintown,
Brookfield, Campbell, Canfield, Jackson-Milton, Lowellville, MCCTC,
Sebring, Struthers, Poland, or Western Reserve.
DefinedSTEM is a set of already developed lessons that are relevant, crosscurricular, focus on 21st century skills, differentiate learning, incorporate nonfiction reading and writing and provide an authentic assessment of their
students understanding. These lessons are provided FREE to any K-12
teacher in participating districts during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school
years.
The first day of this training will be for new users or those wishing to be
refreshed. The second day will be for teachers that already have the
basic understanding of the DefinedSTEM curriculum or who have attended
the first day.

INVENTORcloud Training

Intended audience: New teachers using the INVENTORcloud
INVENTORcloud Program brings together standards-aligned K-12 courses with a
STEM focus, the INVENT3D Printer and rapid prototyping equipment and 21st
century skills to help you create an engaging learning environment for your
students. This PD will introduce you to the technologies and equipment used in
the INVENTORcloud Program.
You’ll learn about Moodle LMS which hosts INVENTORcloud’s rich and relevant
content derived from videos, articles and other media sources.
An introduction to 123D computer-aided design (CAD) will help you teach
students to solve real-world challenges by creating virtual prototypes using CAD
programs. As you will have an INVENT3D Printer in your school, augmented with
virtual access to INVENTORcloud’s rapid prototyping lab, this PD will show you
how to use the INVENT3D printer, how to review CAD files and optimize for
printing. You will have the opportunity to experience the resources necessary to
give students the creative, collaborative, and technical skills necessary to
succeed in 21st century careers.
All projects and courses are fully scripted for the teacher, and professional
development and technical support are provided to ensure your success.

Math Stations for the Secondary Math Classroom

Intended audience: Math Teachers, Grades 5-12
The Math Stations strategy is based on the work of Carol Ann Tomlinson. She
differentiates between centers and stations. Centers are areas in the
classroom where students refine a skill or extend a concept. Stations are
different places in the classroom where students work on tasks
simultaneously, and whose activities are linked.
During Math Stations students do not rotate round-robin style; instead, the
teacher carefully plans which students will visit which stations, and when. In
this way, the station tasks will support meeting the instructional needs of
individual students.
Bring your best lesson (that may or may not have stations/centers already
built in) to share with others. Lessons will be scanned and uploaded into a
shared Google Folder.

Embedding the Mathematical Practices into
Instruction

Intended audience: Kindergarten to Grade 5 Math Teachers
This is a one day learning opportunity dedicated to integrating the
Mathematical Practices into daily student centered activities/tasks. The
session will begin with an overview of each Mathematical Practice. This will
be followed by participants working together to create student-centered
activities/tasks that help students investigate more than one standard. The
activities/tasks created will be scanned into an online database that will be
accessible for all teachers to access throughout the school year.

The workshop will involve an exploration and explanation of the components
of the Lucy Calkin’s writing kits and their purposes. The facilitator will model
writing workshop sessions and participants will have time to collaborate with
grade member teams to create workshop sessions and explore writing
workshop frameworks. Discussion will also focus on learning progressions
and assessment of writing. Participants should bring Calkin’s writing kits to

among participants. Topics will center on using “rich tasks” in the classroom,
but will also include conversation around questioning techniques, use of
technology, and differentiation strategies. Topics will be linked to

Best Practices for Teaching English
Language Learners (ELLs)

Intended audience: All K-12 Educators
Participants will be provided with the skill sets needed to instruct and
advocate for ELL (English Language Learners) students within their
classrooms and schools, including the use of motivational and practical
hands-on activities to foster the development of students’ content knowledge
and English language skills.
The presenter will be Brenda Custodio, PH. D. from The Ohio State
University, Newcomer and ELL Services.

Being Intentional with Literacy in the Science
Classroom

This workshop will focus on the intentional integration of literacy, both
reading and writing, to increase students’ comprehension of scientific
knowledge. Content will be aligned to the Literacy Standards for Science and

of readers, developing text dependent questions, and extending writing
beyond the lab reports.

State Certified Mentor Training

complete a two-day training to become state certified mentors.

Assessment Literacy in the English Language Arts
Classroom

Intended audience: ELA Teachers, grades 5-12
Backwards Design creators Wiggins and McTighe argue that you can’t start
planning how you’re going to teach until you know exactly what you want
your students to learn. Teachers must think of assessments as an integrated
part of their instruction, rather than a separate activity that comes after the
learning. In this professional development, teachers will:





Learn how to create assessments to mirror standardized assessments,
rather than creating isolated test prep time.
Discuss learning priorities in the ELA classroom, and how these
influence pacing guides, SLOs, etc… (e.g. close reading, textual
evidence, writing for a variety of tasks, purposes and audiences).
Learn how to assessing standards, rather than texts.
Understand text complexity, and how to best choose rigorous texts for
assessments
Create text dependent questions that encourage students to use close
reading strategies.

Self Organizing Learning Environments (SOLE)

Intended audience: Teachers and Administrators (K-12, any subject)
In 1999, educational researcher Dr. Sugata Mitra conducted his pioneering
“Hole in the Wall” experiments to study how children learn in self-organized
settings. In New Delhi and remote areas of India, students who had little to
no formal education were given access to a computer and high speed
internet while a camera monitored their interactions. The results were
incredible and almost impossible to believe. Children with little or no input
from an adult instructor led themselves on a process of enthusiastic
exploration, discovery, and peer coaching that resulted in the ability to learn
almost anything – new languages, the solution to complex questions, science
and math, and more. Fourteen years of research and iteration since then
continue to support these starting results. Professor Mitra has honed this
work into a concept of Self-Organizing Learning Environments or SOLEs,
which draw on children’s natural curiosity to create a dynamic space for
students to learn, interact and develop critical problem-solving skills.
Professor Mitra’s vision has earned him the first ever one million dollar TED
Prize. Jeffrey McClellan is supporting the implementation of SOLE in the
Cleveland Region and beyond. This session will be an introduction to the
SOLE approach. Self-Organized Learning Environments can work with
students of all ages. Participants will also learn more information about free
support for implementation in their educational environment.
The first half of the session will be learning the concept through experiencing
the process. The second half of the session will be more of a work session
with support in order to plan a SOLE with other educators from our area.
If the registration for this exceeds expectations a follow-up session may be
opened immediately following this first session.
