Dr. Hariharan A/L N.Krishnasamy

Biography
Hariharan A/L N. Krishnasamy is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Education and
Modern Languages, College of Arts and Sciences, Universiti Utara Malaysia. He studied
at Universiti Malaya for his BA, MMLS and Dip. Ed. He began his teaching career in 1985
as a Malay language instructor in Bintulu, Sarawak. While there, his greater involvement
in Malay language teaching earned him his appointment as the Head of the Malay
Language Department at his school. He took several initiatives to encourage rural
students to engage actively in language activities. After having served in Bintulu, he
served in a rural school in Selangor before being appointed as lecturer at Universiti
Utara Malaysia in Sintok, Kedah, in 1994. He obtained his PhD. at Monash University,
Australia, and since his return from Australia, he has served in several capacities such as
teacher trainer, Head of the English Language Department, and member of the
Internationalization Committee. His research interests include current educational
issues, intercultural communication, and second language acquisition.

ABSTRACT
Reframing education: Challenging times in the 21st century
The 21st century poses many challenges in the field of education. It is dynamic, complex,
intriguing, and creates space for more unpredictable outcomes in institutions of
learning. Current trends in the field of education suggest that changes will inevitably
happen in schools, training centres, colleges and universities. The education system
cannot remain static for long. Globalization and technological innovations will influence
the teaching-learning process. However, there is a need to be ready for changes,
challenges and opportunities that the new educational landscape presents. The
traditional, conservative classroom with the teacher as sage on stage has undergone
many transformations. Student-centred learning, school-based assessment, life-long
learning, multiple literacies, computer-assisted learning, social media networks and
media technology in the teaching–learning process are closely linked to the realm of
education in the 21st century. Education has become more competitive and more
educational institutions are making rigorous efforts to improve their students’ levels of
academic achievement. Nevertheless, educational institutions and systems can play a
vital role to maintain sociocultural sensitivity so that they can accommodate the needs
of different groups of learners and celebrate diversity.

Background: The current era of globalization, which needs to be
created and prepared is the younger generation who have strong
intellectual insight, fear and faith, and has high character. Character
formation for young people begins at home and continues in school
and society. One of which plays a role in preparing the young
generation characteristic is a teacher at school. Experience the
difference in teacher gives a lesson at school. Objective: This study
indicated a wish to be seen is whether the experience and longserving teachers to give effect in providing quality learning and
establish productive and qualified students. Results: In the study
conducted using survey and respondents is a favourite of teachers in
schools in the public perception of high school and high school YKPP
Binsus found that long-serving teacher experience and influence in
the shaping and forming productive students and qualified young
generation. Conclusion: the experience of giving distinctive colours
and patterns. Included in making students productive and quality. A
total of 22 teachers from 30 state teachers agree and strongly agree
that experience influenced in making students productive and
quality.

In this new era, the technology has evolved and transformed to adapt
the needs by human being. This advancement has also affects the
design field from time to time. Human being has used design
approaches throughout the history to get their desired needs. Most

of the time, the design process has its own complexity and richness
and the designers often faced this situation. Therefore, to reduce the
complexity, the designs need to be done in a team. In order to do
that, the designers need to collaborate and interact among the team
members. The evolution of technology has given opportunities
towards them to utilize the technology in the design learning. When
applying the current technology, it will be easier for them to interact
by using the features provided by the developer. Thus, throughout
this paper, a reviewon the collaboration and interactivity in design
learning using cloud computing will be discussed accordingly.

This study focused on three aspects of classroom management
strategies, which were managing classroom behavior, specific
teaching techniques and working with parents. This research was
implemented to study how master education students view on
strategies toward classroom management and discipline and
handling
these
techniques
during
teaching
_learning
process .Moreover this study revealed, students perspectives based
on their teaching experience and their gender meanwhile they
studying as postgraduate students. These respondents were first
year education students. The instrument used in this study is
questionnaire which was collected from INCREDEBIL YEARS. This
would help to promote sustain teachers community and dedication
to their profession.

Background: Reading skills of many Malaysian students at secondary
level are not with desirable or acceptable level. Objective: The
objective of this study is to ascertain the effectiveness of using the
STAD method (one of the cooperative approaches) in reading

comprehension among Form Four students. In this study the
researchers investigated whether the utilization of the STAD method
enhanced the achievement of the experimental group in reading
comprehension compared to the control group which was taught
using the conventional method. The researchers also investigated
whether the STAD method enhanced significantly the social skills off
the subjects from the experimental compared to the control group. .
Results: The findings indicated that the mean scores of the
experimental group in reading comprehension enhanced
significantly compared to the control group. The findings also
revealed that social skills of students from the experimental group
enhanced significantly compared to the control group. Conclusion:
The findings of this study show that the STAD method is a good
alternative for ESL teachers to make a paradigm shift from teachercentred to one that is student-centred in teaching comprehension.

Background: Automotive industry has grown a lot in a recent year
due to the markets demand and rapid changes in technology. The
enormous development of cars production has changed the pattern
of labor requirement in term of skills and knowledge needed in the
workplace. On this issue, training institutes are required to produce
workers who are globally competitive and can cope with the new
technologies. The purpose of this study is to investigate and at the
same time trying to understand the phenomenon of the students’
preparation for the workplace in mechanical engineering
(automotive). It addresses responses from the trainers’ perspectives
regarding the knowledge and skills transferred by investigating the
condition of the training process at the institutes. There were six
participants involved in this study. This study was carried out using
the qualitative method approach by taking place in six Giat MARA
Institutes in the state of Johor Malaysia. Individual interviews were
implemented for the data collection. The findings provide the
trainers view of a variety of needs. The key issues include
diversification of educational approaches, expanding partnership
with the branded automotive industry, knowledge and skills
upgrading among the trainers and update of the training facilities.
The findings also asserted that the development of curricula must be
relevant in term of the trainees, substantives outcomes and toward
technological development in the automotive industry. The best
practice in developing a quality VET programs is by involving all

Background: In line with the rebranding of pre-university form six
program, teachers job are to equip students with high intellectual
ability through the practice of critical and creative thinking. The
practice of critical and creative thinking possessed by students
enable them to solve problems in a logical and rational way in order
to practice lifelong learning. Objective: This study identify the
pedagogical practices of pre-university teachers in enhancing the
students' intellectual quality. Results: The results showed that the
most sub dimension of pedagogical practices shown by the preuniversity teachers in enhancing students' intellectual quality was
teaching strategy. Results from independent t-test showed that there
were significant gender differences in every construct of pedagogical
practices among teachers in enhancing students’ intellectual quality.
However, the mean score showed that female teachers have higher
mean in employing better pedagogical practices in enhancing
students intellectual quality compared to male teachers. Analysis of
one way ANNOVA also showed significance difference in means of
pedagogical practice according to teachers teaching experience.
Conclusion: This study indicate that the pre-university teachers in
the state of Penang do enhance the students intellectual quality
through their pedagogical practices with biggest concern on
implementing it through their teaching strategy in the classroom.

Storytelling is a method of conveying information to the audience in
a variety of ways, whether oral, scripting stories, cartoons and
movies. The transition from the art of storytelling in digital form
with infused multimedia elements will ease the presentation of
information. However, educators are unable to distinguish between

Digital Storytelling (DST) and non-DST clearly. Thus, the usage of
digital media is poorly delivered because of inappropriate content of
presentation. Therefore, this study is intended to determine the
views and usage of DST in education with the interaction of the
tablet. Data was collected through using informal interviews and
questionnaires from 33 respondents from educators at the Institute
of Teacher Education (ITE). Findings show that even though most of
the respondents have never heard about the concept of DST, the
process of narration have attracted their attention in the media
creation. Tablet as user's preference for mobile device is
recommended for better interaction in the usage of DST in the
classroom.

Bacgraound: The Malaysian Ministry of Education introduced School
Based Assessment (SBA) to enhance the development of human
capital, as well as monitor and assess students in a more conducive
teaching and learning environment.
Objective: This study intends to explore the level of teachers’
readiness towards the implementation of School-Based Assessment
(SBA). The study was conducted in 10 primary schools in the district
of Kota Setar, which is situated in Kedah, Malaysia. A total of 20
teachers were purposively selected from these 10 schools. Two
teachers were selected frome each school. The criteria for selection
included those who were teaching in Grade 4, and had 3 years’
experience in teaching SBA. Semi-structured interviews were
conducted to collect data on teachers’ views on the implementation
of SBA. Results: Most teachers had a positive view on SBA and were
willing to implement it. Nevertheless, there were several issues
raised regarding the implementation of SBA. The issues included
internet access, excessive paperwork, constructing items for tests,
scales of evaluation which were open to several interpretations, and
the need for more information, clarity and guidance to implement
SBA effectively. Conclusions: The implication here is that teachers
feel that they are in agreement that SBA should be implemented, but
the necessary preparatory steps need to be given close attention so
that its implementation would be more effective.

Teaching Practicum is one of the most important component in
teacher education programme not only in Malaysia but also in other
countries in the world. Teaching Practicum functions as a platform
for student teachers to develop their professionalism and identity as
a teacher. Therefore, the main focus of this study is to investigate
teacher professional identity development of 384 student teachers
from three Teacher Training Institutes situated in the Northern
region Malaysia. These student teachers who are enrolled in
Bachelor of Education programme have carried out their compulsory
teaching practicum for eight weeks. The Teacher professional
identity in this study were measured repeatedly across time at three
occasions which is before, during and after the student teachers have
undergone their teaching practicum using a self-developed
questionnaire.In addition to Teacher Professional Identity
questionnaire, an instrument measured the mentor teacher quality,
teacher educators and school environment were also developed and
administered to the same respondent at the end of the teaching
practicum which is considered as the teaching contextual variables.
The data collected were analysed using repeated measure analysis of
variance (ANOVA). The findings showed significant and positive
changes in teachers' professional identity during and after the
teaching practicum compared to before the teaching practicum.
Teaching contexts such as mentor teacher, teacher educator and
school environment were also found to show significant and
interaction effects on the development of teacher professional
identity. The implication of the findings is also discussed.

Background: In School-Based Assessment (SBA), teachers have the
autonomy to carry out formative and summative assessment at their
discretion. In a sense, teachers’ integrity and credibility is recognized
and enhanced. Teachers are indeed suitable to continuously monitor
their students’ performance in schools. SBA was officially introduced
by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, and implemented in-line with
the Standards-based Primary School Curriculum, in stages starting in

the year 2011 as part of Malaysia’s educational reform. Objective:
This paper deals with the implementation of SBA in Malaysia and the
issues related to its early years of implementation, which include
teachers understanding of the SBA itself and their readiness to
implement SBA in their schools. Results: Literature has shown that
teachers still have difficulty in accepting the changes made in the
school assessment policy, they do not get sufficient information on
SBA and as well as relevant trainings. This paper sets out to provide
a glimpse of the purposively selected group of nine teachers’
understanding of SBA and to what extent they ready to implement
SBA in their schools. In this exploratory qualitative study, it was
found that there are respondents who lacked knowledge about SBA.
Some of them were less satisfied with the ways knowledge about
SBA was disseminated to them by the authorities. Some of the
respondents also reported that despite some hiccups with the
trainings they received, they are ready to implement SBA in their
schools. Conclusion: The findings in the study contribute to
knowledge about teachers’ understanding of SBA and their state of
readiness during the early years of the implementation of SBA within
Malaysia Education System.

The purpose of this article is to report the development, validity and
reliability of School-based professional learning inventory (SPLI)
that has been used to evaluate secondary teachers` perception
toward school-based professional learning. The first phase of the
study has been carried out through Exploratory Factor Analysis by
using data from 124 trained teachers from 4 secondary schools in
Petaling Perdana District, Selangor. The Exploratory Factor Analysis
through orthogonal rotation varimax method has shown four SPLI
factors from seven proposed factors have been developed. The
Cronbach Alpha of the overall items is .924.

Background: Homework is playing a major role in education system.
There are a lot of researches about mathematics homework and
mathematics achievement. But these studies were showing
instability in findings especially time spending on mathematics
homework and availability of reference books towards mathematics
achievement. Descriptive analysis was applied and Pearson
correlation coefficient was used to determine relationships between
the factors Objective: The aims of this research were to determine
the amount of time spending to do mathematics homework weekly
and the level of availability of references books to do mathematics
homework and to identify relationships between time spending on
mathematics homework and availability of reference books towards
mathematics achievement. Results: In Sabah state, findings revealed
that 58% of the students spent more than 1 hour weekly to do their
mathematics homework compared to 42% students spent less than 1
hour weekly. Besides that, 60% of the students were have enough
references books to do mathematics homework and 40% of students
do not enough references books to do their mathematics homework.
Research findings showed a positive moderate relationship with
achievement in two aspects: (1) time spending in Mathematic
Homework; (2) availability of reference books to do mathematics
homework. Conclusion: The research findings implied that teachers
should not burden students with too much of homework but to
assign tasks based on reference books that they do have and
consider about students capabilities while assigning quality
mathematics homework.

Background: The study was conducted in childcare centers that
covered three states in the northern part of Malaysia. Thus, the
Quality Improvements and Accreditation System (QIAS) instrument
was used for this purpose. This is reflected in the seven (7)
proportion quality areas in the QIAS, which are; staff relationships
with children and peers; partnerships with families; programming

and evaluation; children’s experiences and learning; protective care
and safety; health, nutrition and wellbeing; and managing to support
quality. Objective: The objective of this paper is to disseminate
findings and share best practices of early childcare operators,
providers, principals, and teachers that handled children from birth
to 6 years. It aimed to identify the level of quality management
practices in childcare centers in Malaysia. Results: Data collected
through the questionnaire depict a slightly different picture where
the childcare providers and teachers reported that their practices
were moderate in terms of staff relationships with children and
peers, partnerships with families, programming and evaluation,
children’s experiences and learning, and managing to support quality
except protective care and safety which was high. Conclusion: This
QIAS instrument is able to serve as a guidelines to the childcare
center on what is needed and required to be look into and take into
consideration in order to ensure the quality of childcare centers.

political influence. Climate change education can be seen rather than

minister. The education minister also will change the educational
curriculum. These changes can not be separated from political
influence. To what extent are political influence in education? How
are the advantages and disadvantages of each change in the
educational curriculum?. Through observation and study library
issues will be reviewed. Objective: This study indicated a wish to be
seen climate change in educational curriculum Indonesia. Results:
independence in Indonesian state education curriculum enactment
known some time ranging from simple curriculum (1947-1964),
curriculum renewal (1968 and 1975), skills-based curriculum (1984
and 1994), and competency-based curriculum (2004 and 2006). The
latest to date is the 2013 curriculum. Conclusion: Education and
politics have an influence in advancing the human resources of the
nation and the people of Indonesia.

In mobile network, mobility management plays an important role in
order to support seamless communication in Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) network. It is important to optimize some
technique and specific service to the mobile users in order to
improve the handover execution. One of the problem in the existing
network is the fixed handover threshold value. In this work, a
framework has been proposed to analyse the handover performance
as speed and summation of handoff signalling and Radio Link Failure
(RLF) timer varies due to poor radio conditions case. A mathematical
equation has been derived from the propose framework. The types of
handover that have been considered in this work are intra-MME and
inter-MME for LTE-A network. From the result, it has been found that
with the propose framework, the probability of false handover
initiation and handover failure increase as speed increase at a fixed
handoff threshold value.

communicative language teaching using communicative approach.
The aim is to determine English as Second Language (ESL) excellent
teachers’ communication skills as displayed in their second language
(L2) classrooms. This study explored the communication skills used
by ESL secondary excellent teachers. Data were collected from 10
class hours of video recordings. The study supports better quality
teacher communication, with regard to classroom communication,

An efficient algorithm in allocating resources to active flows is
important since it will affect the individual user’s throughput and
fairness. Thus, it is important to choose an optimal packet scheduler

we have studied five downlink packet scheduling algorithms in LTESim which can be used to schedule real-time traffic such as video.
The aim of this study is to determine the most suitable packet
scheduling algorithm in order to schedule the video flows. The
performance of these packet scheduling algorithms are evaluated
based on the performance metric of throughput, delay, fairness and
packet loss rate (PLR). Simulation results indicated that FLS
outperformed others in all situations. Thus it is concluded that FLS is
the most suitable packet scheduling algorithm to schedule video
flows.

Activated carbon is known for its capability in removing organic
compounds and pollutants from liquid and gas streams efficiently.
However, conventional activated carbon available in the market
presently is expensive. Recently, many previous research works
have been done on non-woody materials to substitute the present
conventional activated carbon, such as sugarcane bagasse, coconut
fiber, macadamia bagasse and hazelnut bagasse. Activated carbon
from sugarcane bagasse is one of the suggested alternatives that
have been introduced to replace conventional activated carbon.
Besides of its low cost, it is also abundantly available from local small
medium industry. In this paper, comprehensive review of activation
process involved in production of sugarcane bagasse activated
carbon and several others agricultural waste based activated carbon
is provided. However, chemical activation process is the main focus
as it involves impregnation method. The expansion of the review
regarding the performance of activated carbon indicates that, the
targeted pollutant removal is depends on type of acid and
concentration of acid used in impregnation method. As a result, the
review illustrates the necessity of a profound knowledge on
activation process with an extensive list of various types and
concentration of acid used in impregnation method of various raw
materials.

In cellular system, Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) is partition
each cell into two regions which are the cell center region and cell
edge region. The dissimilar frequency band is owed to each region in
cell. The FFR method may reduce channel interference and achieve
large system capacity and hence increases the throughput. Long
Term Evolution (LTE) has developed a femtocell for indoor coverage
extension. However, the development of femtocell in macrocell area
will having interference problem and it ought to be answered in
move ahead. This paper proposes an interference management
scheme in the LTE femtocell systems using FFR proposed method. In
detail, the proposed method is the FFR of six sectors and it selects
the optimal size of the fraction center radius as well as the system
bandwidth fraction. Simulation results show that the proposed
method improve the average throughputs in overall network.

Activated carbon has strong affinity towards binding organic
pollutants of wastewater [6]. In this study, activated carbon was
prepared by chemical activation from the sugarcane bagasse in term
of optimum impregnation ratio with H3PO4, temperature and time
of carbonization through the highest removal of COD, alkalinity and
oil and grease concentrations of real car wash wastewater. Based on
the results employed, the desired properties for activated carbon
from sugarcane bagasse were obtained at these optimum conditions:
20% of impregnation ratio, activation temperature of 550 °C with 2
hour of time carbonization. These conditions exhibited maximum
COD removal of reached optimum removal of 52.08%, 59.09%
removal of alkalinity, whereas oil and grease at 40.64% removal
obtained for 20% impregnation ratio. The sugarcane bagasse have
potential to be used as activated carbon in treating car wash
wastewater. Our ongoing project will test the performance of the
final product for applications in removing the pollutants more
effeciently.

Background: LTE has the capability to move towards the 4G wireless
systems. Initially, 3GPP considers higher data rates, lower latencies
and offering multimedia services such as VoIP, video streaming and
BE. Thus, a good packet scheduling scheme that can copes with both
service classes simultaneously, delivers balanced QoS and utilizes
the system radio resources efficiently is the solution to this. The
objective of this study is to determine the most suitable packet
scheduling algorithm in order to schedule the video and VoIP flows.
The performance of these packet scheduling algorithms are
evaluated based on the performance metric of throughput, delay,
and jitter. The results show that CQA algorithm outperformed the
other algorithms since it has the lowest delay and high throughput.
Thus it can be concluded that CQA is the most suitable algorithm to
schedule the video and VoIP flows.

Hydrogen storage has become the main challenge in making
hydrogen-fuelled economy into reality. Among the approaches is the
adsorption on solid-state material. Porous materials, such as
agricultural-based activated carbon, zeolite templated-carbons, and
clay-based materials are known to possess a great utility in
adsorption of hydrogen. This paper aims to review and summarize
the recent advances of the materials that are currently under
investigation to store hydrogen in solid-state materials. In this paper,
comparison between the achievements of the agricultural-based
activated carbon, zeolite templated-carbons and clay-based
materials as the sorbent materials has been discussed. In a nutshell,
by tailoring their textural properties, they show a remarkable
potential in storing hydrogen.

Heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized by the direct
immobilization of molybdenum complexes and vanadium complexes
on montmorillonite (MMT) K10 clay. The immobilized catalyst was
characterized by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), X-ray
powder diffraction (XRD), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) with KBr pellet
method. The AAS analysis resulted the increasing concentration of
elemental
composition
of
immobilized
vanadium
and
molybdenum complexes on MMT-K10 samples. Basal spacing for
MMT-K10 was 9.9A - 10.0A (similar for all immobilized samples)
suggesting the clay structure was retained. Characterization of
immobilized
catalyst
demonstrated
positive
trends
in
their structures, morphology, crystallographic, their surface area and
porosity as well as their thermal stability.

Knowledge assets which are related to an organization business core
can ensure its competitive edge in business competition by
transforming knowledge into goods and services. However unlike
physical asset, Knowledge Asset is intangible and there are
inadequacy techniques to measure the Knowledge Asset. The value
of the Knowledge Assets varies, depending on human cognition and
awareness which includes context sensing, personal memory and
cognitive processes. The aim of this research is to interpret the value
of the Knowledge Asset into a meaningful and tangible way. The
objective is to develop a model that defines the value of Knowledge
Assets. The research approach used is a qualitative single case
research. The research has begun with a literature review, document
study and interview for information gathering. The findings from the
literature review reveals existing framework or model which applied
to measure intangible asset. Whereas the document study reveals the
factors that triggered event to create, review, update and dispose the
Knowledge Asset. This information is used as a foundation to
develop the conceptual model. Interviews have conducted and
presented the model to the Knowledge Management manager and
Knowledge Engineers to collect feedbacks about the conceptual
model. As the result, the proposed model enables the Manager and

Knowledge Engineers to use the identified factors to value the
Knowledge Assets easily and interpret its value into more
meaningful and tangible way.

Background: As an initiative to strengthen the mastery of basic
principles of Islam among students at primary school level, the
Ministry of Education (MOE) has introduced the j-QAF programme.
This programme has been introduced since 2004 which includes
aspects of learning Jawi script, reading Quran, learning Arabic and
understanding basic skills of Fard ‘Ayn. Based on these four aspects,
the study focus on the aspects of reading Quran in j-QAF programme.
This study employs a case study method by focussing at Sekolah
Kebangsaan Dato’ Demang Hussin, Malacca. This paper discusses the
relationship between the aspect of fluency and other aspects of
quranic reading mastery among Standard Six pupils who are the first
generation of student to follow the teaching and learning of the jQAF programme. In addition, it also describes the differences
between the gender of pupils on every aspects in reading the Quran
in the j-QAF programme. Quranic reading test was used as an
instrument to gain data for the study. This instrument was adopted
and adapted from the form published by Majlis Tilawah al-Quran
(MTQ). A total of 136 standard six primary school students were
randomly chosen from every class with different level of
achievement. This research also analyzed the correlation between
the aspect of fluency and another aspect of Quranic reading mastery
in j-QAF programme. In the inferential analysis, the findings show
that there is a significant correlation between the aspect of fluency
and the rules of tajwid, punctuation and pronunciation. Meanwhile,
there is no significant difference of the level of mastery in reading
the Quran among girls and boys in all aspects; fluency, the rules of
tajwid, punctuation and pronunciation. This study also propose
some recommendations for the future researchers to ensure the
successful implementation of the Quranic modules in the j-QAF
programme in meeting its intended objectives.
