Stress is a normal part of living and while it is usually advantageous, chronic stress can have longterm effects on our mental and physical well-being. Positive stress motivates us when we are preparing for a complex task or it helps us to prepare for a sporting event. This stress assists in dealing with adversity and builds resilience. Tolerable stress is the result of a serious occurrence such as the death of a significant other, or being involved in a car accident. This stress can usually be dealt with through the support of friends, family and the outside community. Toxic Stress is relentless, ongoing and unpredictable. This kind of stress can be detrimental to children as it is often a consequence of neglect, abuse or extreme deprivation. This is never good for children because they cannot predict if or when something bad will happen, and cannot control stopping a toxic stressor. Long periods of toxic stress can lead to constant release of stress hormones in children. Our neural circuits that help us deal with stress are flexible and adaptable prior to birth and in early childhood. As our experiences affect how these circuits turn on and off, toxic stress has the potential to make our neural circuits and hormone systems over or under-react to stress throughout our lifetime. Research indicates that over time chronic stress can lead to a variety of disorders including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndromes such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory conditions such as asthma and arthritis. Toxic stress also has the potential to affect brain design which can lead to learning delays, depression, addictions, anxiety disorders and problems with memory recall and mood. There are reported occurrences of toxic stress leading to the development of a smaller brain. Fortunately toxic stress can be managed when proper support is put into place at home and in the community. This kind of support is the most important variable in determining the overall quality of child development. The only time stress becomes toxic is when no supports are in place. Examples of this support at home are parents and caregivers, and in the community with safe schools and public areas to foster the development of children and parents.
