“3D Printing Technology and Quality Management”
One of the top ten future technologies recently selected by Forbes is the 3D printing
technology.
The
3D
printing
technology
was
also
selected
as
the
ten
key
manufacturing technologies to revive the U.S. manufacturing by the U.S. government
in 2013. Chosen as the driving force of the third industrial revolution succeeding the
internal combustion engine and the computer, the 3D printing technology is spotlighted
as the key factor in the Industry 4.0 with IoT (Internet of Things). GE announced a
new engine through the 3D printer. According to its announcement, the new engine is
a single product not requiring assembly and is lighter by 25% and stronger by about
5 times. However, in the manufacturing site emphasizing the current post quality
control concept, the quality of a product or a part can be screened through
inspection. The product introducing the 3D printing technology includes the difficulty
in controlling the quality issue without the introduction of the in-process management
concept. Hence, it is expected to manage the original stream of quality by building
the real-time monitoring system by connecting the advanced sensing technology and
the big data technology with the Internet of things. The Korean Society for Quality
Management will intensively find out the cases or research papers improving the
quality of the 3D printing technology by using the big data and the sensor data to
widely distribute them to the industry.
