Some people receive a very good service which they value. However, some are not so happy with their home care and we think it is important that their voices are heard. These people are amongst the most vulnerable in our community and this care at home is vital to their ability to remain independent and to have a quality of life. The lay assessors’ reports will go back to the council who will then take up any problems with the companies providing the services. RSVP recruit volunteers who are over 50 years of age, typically retired or working part time. You will work as part of a multi- disciplinary team that also includes supported housing and resettlement workers, education, training and employment workers and mental health specialists. Together you will improve outcomes for young people leaving care and custody. The role is designed to establish innovative approaches to actively involve young people in capturing and sharing learning about “what works” for them - to help them engage in services and to help young people with complex needs achieve positive outcomes. The post holder will also provide intensive support to a small caseload of young people, typically for a period of 6-12 months with each person, supporting them in all areas of their life, and contributing to improved outcomes for young people across the organisation. An overarching aim of Future 4 Me is to join up services for young people, and the post holder will liaise closely with lead professionals in other agencies. The job role will improve outcomes for young people leaving care and custody, in relation to their accommodation, education, employment, health, confidence and access to positive activities. A key aim of the post is to understand, capture and share “what works” in engaging young people leaving care and custody and improving outcomes, and the post will help the team to capture and share project learning locally and nationally. The post will help to capture learning from young people using innovative methods, and capture learning from staff, including learning from reflective practice. You will take part in monthly, facilitated reflective practice sessions to improve your own and the team's practice, with an overall aim of improving outcomes for young people. What will an average day be like? An average day will include working individually with young people in the community, as well as working with young people before they leave care or custody, so they are better prepared for independent living. Support will address a range of needs, including accessing high quality accommodation, learning and work, and improving young people’s health and confidence. You will also work closely with our voluntary sector partners who we commission to provide mentoring, literacy support and positive activities. 20 You will capture learning using a range of methods, for example through interviews, audio clips and facilitating a service user group. You will liaise closely with colleagues in Children and Young People’s Services, Youth Offending Teams and other services to ensure a highly co-ordinated approach to supporting young people. Three key duties: Establishing trusting relationships with young people, assessing their needs, and providing responsive, person-centred support to overcome barriers. Working with internal/external partners to ensure that services meet young people’s needs in a co-ordinated way. Working with young people, the team and stakeholders to capture and share project learning. About you You will have significant experience of working with vulnerable young people, a good understanding of the needs of care and custody leavers, and have excellent skills in engaging vulnerable people. You must have the ability, skills and experience to develop trusting relationships with vulnerable young people and to understand their “drivers” and aspirations. You must be able to offer clear and consistent responses to young people who may present challenging behaviour, be chaotic, distressed and have learned not to trust. You will bring experience of how to evaluate the impact of services and the tools that support this, and bring experience of creatively and actively involving service user in the evaluation, shaping and improvement of services. Leading service negotiations and devising solutions with all parties to prevent homelessness, ensuring the needs and risks of service users and third parties are assessed effectively. Working in partnership with relevant agencies where appropriate, to provide additional support. Coordinating and supporting a bank of volunteers to help deliver the service. About you You have empathy with and understanding of the needs of homeless people and the barriers they face. You like being around and working with people. We're looking for someone who has a good understanding of the issues facing people who are at risk of homelessness and of the solutions available to them to avoid losing their current home. Experience in mediation or restorative approaches would be an advantage, however, the ability to remain impartial, empathetic and solution-focused is just as essential to the role. You will have the skills and competencies to coordinate volunteers, offering them training, supervision and continual support in relation to the cases they are handling. You need to be comfortable working in a variety of housing settings, e.g. supported housing or family homes, and you will be able to assess and manage risk at both service and service user level - to ensure mediation sessions remain safe and confidential. You will regularly be working with people from diverse backgrounds and with vulnerable people, so you should understand the importance of working within an equal opportunities framework and within safeguarding and confidentiality guidelines.
