February 3, Wednesday • Arusha
We are greeted on our first morning in Africa by a full buffet breakfast. Our sightseeing begins with a visit to a nearby school,
a very interesting experience. Then we drive a short distance for a game drive through Arusha National Park. In addition
to buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, and other large mammals, Arusha National Park boasts of having the highest concentration of
giraffes in Africa. Chances of spotting mountainous birds and black and white Colobus monkeys are high. The Momela lakes
offer splendid sightings of hippos, flamingos and aquatic birds, with Mt. Meru, the second highest peak in Tanzania, acts as
a spectacular backdrop. The park is also famous for its diversity of butterflies, including the rare swallowtail.
Overnight Serena Lake Duluti Hotel, BLD
February 4, Thursday • Lake Manyara National Park
Departing the Arusha area we drive westward to visit Tarangire National Park, the home of over 4,000 elephants! But as we
enter the park we almost immediately notice the majestic baobob trees dotting the landscape, many of which are hundreds
of years old. Reaching to the sky, they seem to dwarf the animals that feed beneath them. Animal species include zebra,
wildebeest, and lions, to name but a few. The park is also home to over 500 species of birds. We enjoy lunch at the Safari
Wildlife Lodge, whose terrace overlooks a vast landscape, dotted with roaming animals. Late in the afternoon, we continue
to our next destination, Lake Manyara. Overnight Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge BLD
February 5, Friday • Lake Manyara National Park
Morning and afternoon game drives. Located 125 km west of Arusha town, under the wall of the Great Rift Valley, Lake
Manyara National Park is one of the oldest and most popular sanctuaries in East Africa. Animals found in the park include
buffalo, elephants, leopards, baboons, impala, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, ostrich and hippos. Popularly referred to as a
birdwatcher’s paradise, Lake Manyara National Park contains over 400 bird species found in most savanna and river habitats
in East Africa. Common water birds to be seen here are pelicans, spoonbills, Egyptian geese, hammerkops, and the migratory flamingoes,
which arrive in hundreds of thousands, creating one of Africa’s greatest natural sights. Overnight Lake Manyara Serena Lodge BLD
*Based on minimum of 20 participants, Double occupancy from Minneapolis, single supplement $649
February 6, Saturday • Serengeti National Park
We turn northward and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation District and enter the sweeping plains of the Serengeti
National Park. Along the route we may see herds of thousands of migrating wildebeests and zebra. Late afternoon arrival at
the safari lodge Overnight Serengeti Serena Lodge BLD
February 7, Sunday • Serengeti National Park
We enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in Serengeti National Park. The name ‘Serengeti’ comes from the Maasai
language and appropriately means ‘endless plains.’ The National Park is as big as Northern Ireland, and offers the most
complex and least disturbed ecosystem on earth. A unique combination of diverse habitats, it is home to over 30 species of
large mammals, and over 500 species of birds. Overnight Serengeti Serena Lodge BLD
February 8, Monday • Serengeti National Park
Sunrise adventure in the Serengeti! If sky conditions are favorable, we will arise early and drive to an area that offers a
great view of the spectacular rising sun. Don’t forget your cameras, as the sunrise is a NO Miss event of the morning. Box
Breakfast at the Visitor Center, followed by a game drive. Return for lunch at the lodge, followed by some rest time and a late
afternoon game drive in Seronera area. Overnight Serengeti Serena Lodge BLD
February 9, Tuesday • Ngorongoro Crater
Following a brief morning game drive, we drive southward through the park to Olduvai Gorge, one of Africa’s most important archaeological sites. It was there from the 1950s to 1970s that Louis and Mary Leakey discovered some of the world’s
oldest humanoid remains. After lunch we visit a Maasai “boma”(village). Today, Maasai and wildlife live side by side in a
multi-land use experiment. The Maasai herders still retain valued watering rights in Ngorongoro Crater and every day one
sees hundreds of cattle following special trails on the journey to and from the mineral-rich watering places around the crater
floor. Overnight in Ngorongoro Serena Lodge BLD
February 10, Wednesday • Ngorongoro Crater
We descend early in the morning into the crater for an unforgettable game drive with picnic breakfast. The Ngorongoro
Crater floor, a sheer drop of 2,000 feet below the rim, has an area of over 100 square miles, with a diameter of 11 miles. Often
called the 8th Wonder of the World, the crater teems with animals, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, eland, rhino, and a
large predator population of lions, hyenas and jackals, all of which can all be viewed at close quarters. Leopard and cheetah
can also be seen. We then return to the lodge for late lunch. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure, perhaps to spot
animals in the crater from your room’s terrace. Overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge BLD
February 11, Thursday • Return to Arusha and departure
After breakfast we transfer back to Arusha. Lunch will be served at the Heritage Cultural Center, followed by time for
shopping and visiting the fabulous African Art Museum before continuing to the Serena Lake Duluti Hotel for dinner and
final packing. Day rooms will be provided for your convenience. After dinner we transfer to the airport for check in. BLD
February 12, Friday • Arrival in Minneapolis
Upon our morning arrival in Amsterdam we transfer to our flight to Minneapolis, with arrival later this afternoon.
