LOVE IS OUR MISSION
SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY
MAJOR PROPHETS
May 24, 9:15AM
Conf. Rm.
From Chapter 2 The Mission Of Love:
21. With men and women created in
the image of God, history begins. In
history, God calls and forms a
people. He makes a covenant with us,
first through Israel and then through
Christ and the Church.
In this
relationship, God teaches us to love as
he loves. 26. Marriage imagery is
central in describing God’s covenant
with Israel and, later, his covenant with the Church. As
Pope Benedict XVI taught, “Marriage based on exclusive
and definitive love becomes the icon of the relationship
between God and his people and vice versa. 28. The
marriage between God and his people can be
rocky. “God’s relationship with Israel is described using
the metaphors of betrothal and marriage”...30. God
perseveres in love for his people, even when we fall, even
when we insist on trying to live without him. 31. In like
manner, Christian love involves much more than
emotion… 35. For many today, “love” is little more than a
warm feeling or physical attraction. These things have
their place. But real love – love that endures and deepens
and satisfies the human heart over a lifetime – grows from
what we give others, not what we take for ourselves…
Authentic Catholic teaching on marriage and the family
separates true love from all counterfeits.
The study is from 9:15am-10:45am in the conference room
off the gathering area. Want to join or need a book or for
more information call Paul O’Connell at 913-888-2130.

Can you think of a time when God’s love helped you to
love in a more honest and better way?

ASCENSION IN YOUR PLANNED GIVING
CATHOLIC FACT:
PURGATORY
Church of the Ascension invites you to leave a lasting
legacy to the parish. Planned Giving is a means to
thoughtfully transfer resources to the next generation and
helps the church gather the resources necessary for its
mission and ministry. Examples of Planned Giving
include: Last Will and Testament, Revocable Trust,
Charitable Gift Annuities and Memorial Gifts. If you have
questions or you need more information about including
Church of the Ascension in your Planned Giving, please
contact Dawnlee Maurer at dmaurer@kcascension.org or
call the church office at 913-681-3348.
Purgatory is a state of purification for those
souls who have died in the grace of God but require
cleansing from imperfections before they can enter
Heaven. Purgatory is not a lesser form of Hell but
rather a state of preparation for Heaven.

LEADERSHIP INTERNS NEEDED
June 8-12
Ascension
Ascension Catholic School is partnering with Camp
Invention this summer to provide a unique out-of-schooltime elementary enrichment experience with a science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM) focus for
children in our community, June 8-12 from 8:00am3:30pm. During this week-long adventure, children
entering grades one through six will design and build their
own inventions, take apart gadgets and be a part of a team,
have the opportunity to be creative and messy, and have
FUN! The Camp Invention program consists of exciting,
hands-on, inquiry-based activities. Staff-to-child ratios for
this program are 1:8, and the size of the program runs
between 35 and 110 participants. We are searching for
high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 to lead the
student groups. Camp Invention allows the Leadership
Interns the unique opportunities to build leadership
and communication skills. This is a great chance to
earn service hours over the summer. Please contact
Becky Wright at bwright@acseagles.org if you are
interested.
DID YOU KNOW?
In a May 7 meeting with members of an Italian sports
association, Pope Francis said that athletic competition is
healthy as long as it is kept in a balanced perspective.
Pope Francis warned the athletes, however, that they
should not become absorbed in sports to the detriment of
other aspects of life. Specifically, he mentioned that some
young competitors begin to miss Mass or religious
education classes because of practice. “This is not a good
sign,” the Pontiff said. “It means that the person has lost
the balance in his life.”

Church of the Ascension
Pentecost Sunday
May 24, 2015
WEEKLY PRAYER
Pentecost Sunday
Caution: Spirit at Work
Banns of Matrimony
If Pentecost celebrates the gifts of the Spirit, it can tempt us
to separate the Spirit from the Father and Jesus. Sometimes
we think of the Father as the God of the Old Testament,
Jesus as center of New Testament, and the Spirit as God of
the present age, almost as if the Father and Jesus were
enjoying their retirement. Actually, all three persons share
one God-life. Instead of three gods debating the fate of the
universe, we have one God who is over all and in all.
The Spirit has been active in all ages. The prophets were
empowered by the Spirit to proclaim God’s word to Israel.
Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. The
Spirit led Jesus into the desert at the beginning of his
ministry. (Search the word “spirit” in the four gospels and
it appears 75 times.) Jesus was filled with the Spirit as he
preached and worked miracles. Then at Pentecost the
disciples were filled with the Spirit.
So what about Pentecost? It is really about using our gifts
and sharing the good news. The Spirit gives us the power,
courage, and energy to do this. The Spirit’s gifts are meant
to be shared. The prophets could not help proclaim God’s
message. Jesus shared all he knew with his disciples. The
disciples went out to the world to spread the news of Jesus’
death and resurrection. So we, too, are given gifts to be
shared.
The greatest gift we have been given is the news of our
salvation. This feast reminds us to share that with others.
We may do that by example, as when we worship together,
forgive others, give to the poor or help someone in need.
We can also share that news by teaching our children about
God and his love for them, teaching them to pray, or
sharing our faith with other adults. As we come to realize
how much God has done for us and how close he is to us,
we will want to share that with others. Obviously, we can’t
make everyone believe in Jesus. But how sad would it be if
someone we know was looking for the truth and we
neglected to offer it?

MARRIED COUPLES - RSVP TODAY!!!
Recharge.
Marriage enrichment
Phones. Laptops. Tablets. We are careful about
charging our devices so they are there when
we need them. In the busyness of our lives we
sometimes forget to give our marriages the
attention they need to thrive. We forget to
prioritize our marriages, and we fall into
relationship
amnesia.
This
afternoon,
presented by Brad and Libby DuPont of the
Archdiocesan Office of Marriage and Family
Life, will give you practical insights and skills
that will help you recharge the joy in your
most significant relationship!
