WITHIN THE DIVISION AND FORT BRAGG: 82nd Airborne Division Paratroopers are preparing to lead the Division’s largest bilateral training exercise held here in the past 20 years. Paratroopers assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Abn. Div., will lead a Combined Joint Operational Access Exercise with a British battle group from 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, 16 Air Assault Brigade from April 1320. Marines from the 2nd Marine Division will participate in the exercise from Camp Lejune, North Carolina from April 12-17. The CJOAX is a major milestone in the Division’s interoperability program with 16 Air Asslt Bde and builds upon last year’s integration of a U.K company into a U.S.battalion. The program will ultimately create the capability to seamlessly integrate a U.K. brigade into the Division, allowing the two units to operate quickly and effectively in the event they were to deploy as a part of a coalition crisis response force. Approximately 900 British soldiers began arriving at Fort Bragg on March 9 for a series of small arms and artillery live fire training exercises, collective training events, airborne operations and planning and rehearsal sessions prior to the start of the exercise. The CJOAX will assess the combined task force’s ability to conduct a forcible entry and airfield seizure, amphibious assaults, facilitate the air landing of follow-on military units, and execute offensive and defensive operations. The 82nd Abn. Div. is postured to execute no-notice deployments anywhere in the world as the nucleus of the U.S. Global Response Force. The Division’s training program focuses on integrating a wide variety of participants in recognition that future operations in which the Division might participate will likely include other U.S. military services, government agencies and allied and partner nations. a. 3rd Brigade continues to support Train and Advise mission in Iraq. b. The 82nd CAB continues to support the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, providing coalition ground forces with crucial air assets all throughout Afghanistan. Marijuana Treatment Study on PTSD for Veterans Gets Back on Track: Apr 02, 2015 | by Bryant Jordan, A year after the federal government approved a study for the use of marijuana by veterans in treating posttraumatic stress disorder the work may at last get underway. The National Institute of Drug Abuse on Wednesday informed the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies that it is ready to supply researchers with “America’s Guard Of Honor” AFRICA SICILY ITALY FRANCE THE NETHERLANDS BELGIUM GERMANY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC VIETNAM GRENADA PANAMA PERSIAN GULF OEF/OIF KENTUCKY AIRBORNE CHAPTER 82ND Airborne Division Association, Inc. “America’s Guard of Honor” 4913 Flushing Way, Louisville, KY 40272-3175 (502) 937-8234 Chartered by The United States Congress A Brotherhood Formed in Sweat and Blood marijuana needed for the study, Brad Burge, spokesman for MAPS, told Military.com. The study will mark the first federally approved study in which the subjects will be able to ingest the marijuana by smoking it, he said. It will also be "the first whole-plant marijuana study," meaning the marijuana will not simply be an extract of the cannabis in a manufactured delivery system, such as a pill. NIDA's decision had been a long time coming, according to Burge, but that delay was only one of the setbacks after the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency cleared the way for the research last year. b. Six More Female Soldiers Qualify for Army Ranger School : Apr 01, 2015 | by Richard Sisk, Six more female soldiers have qualified to attend Army Ranger School later this month after passing the same physical fitness standards as men, including six pull-ups, 49 push-ups in two minutes, 59 sit-ups in two minutes and a five-mile run in 40 minutes, Army officials said Wednesday. The six additional women, all of them officers, will join at least six other female soldiers who have passed the Ranger Training Assessment Course that qualified them to attend the first gender-integrated Ranger School course that will begin April 20 and last for two months. If the women successfully complete Ranger School, they will be authorized to wear the coveted Ranger tab but will not be immediately considered for the 75th Ranger Regiment, said Gary Jones, an Army spokesman at Fort Benning, Ga. c. Army Loosens Up its Tattoo Policy: Apr 01, 2015 | by Bryant Jordan, A year after tightening restrictions on number and size of tattoos the Army on Wednesday announced an about face, removing the limitations in response to soldiers' concerns. "Society is changing its view of tattoos and we have to change along with that," Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno said in a report by Army Times. "It makes sense. Soldiers have grown up in an era when tattoos are much more acceptable and we have to change along with that," he said. An Army spokeswoman told the paper the new rules will not be official until the regulations are updated and published, which should happen soon. Last March, the Army imposed restrictions on sleeve tattoos, including limiting the number of tattoos below elbows or knees to four. And those tattoos had to be smaller than the size of the soldier's palm, with fingers extended. Within months of the March 2014 tattoo restrictions the Army found itself turning away otherwise qualified men and women seeking to enlist. There was no indication in Wednesday's report whether recruiting concerns played a part in the latest change to the tattoo regulations. Until the change announced Wednesday, the only modification to those regulations was a September 2014 decision allowing soldiers with "grandfathered" tattoos – those inked before the March 2014 restrictions – to become officers. d. VA Requires Standardized Forms: Week of March 30, 2015, The Department of Veterans Affairs now requires veterans seeking disability benefits to use standardized claim and appeal forms. The easiest and fastest way for a Veteran to submit an application for compensation is online through the eBenefits (www.ebenefits.va.gov) portal. VA encourages veterans to work with representatives of Veterans Service Organization (VSO), or their state or county representatives, who can assist with filing electronically or in paper form. Veterans may also notify VA of their intent to file a claim in order to establish the earliest possible effective date for benefits if they are determined eligible. Veterans will have up to one year from the date they submit their intent to file a claim to complete the required application form. e. VA to Expand Veterans Choice Eligibility: Week of March 30, 2015, In order to expand eligibility for the Veterans Choice Program, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that it will change the calculation used to determine the distance between a Veteran's residence and the nearest VA medical facility from a straight line “America’s Guard Of Honor” AFRICA SICILY ITALY FRANCE THE NETHERLANDS BELGIUM GERMANY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC VIETNAM GRENADA PANAMA PERSIAN GULF OEF/OIF KENTUCKY AIRBORNE CHAPTER 82ND Airborne Division Association, Inc. “America’s Guard of Honor” 4913 Flushing Way, Louisville, KY 40272-3175 (502) 937-8234 Chartered by The United States Congress A Brotherhood Formed in Sweat and Blood distance to driving distance.
