ROLE PURPOSE
Since January 2013, King’s has had a small in-country team of volunteers, who are supported by
senior experts from the UK. The in-country team includes a Country Director and a range of key
leads from a range of disciplines such as hospital management, pharmacy & training and nursing.
The King’s Sierra Leone Partnership programme of King’s Health Partners is at an exciting time in
its existence, emerging from its work responding to the Ebola outbreak, and is looking to appoint a
new Clinical Manager to oversee a variety of existing and expanding projects.
KSLP is looking to recruit a new Clinical Manager for its in-country team from March 2015. This
person will be based in Freetown and will have a critical role in making the connection between the
broader strategic, management, training and policy work of KSLP and the realities of daily clinical
activity at Connaught hospital.
The Clinical Manager would be expected to undertake some clinical activity, as an extra-numerary
staff member, such as in A&E or on the general medical team. The focus of the work, however, will
be to provide technical support to the senior management of Connaught Hospital, which is working
to overhaul clinical and management systems at the hospital. In particular, the hospital leadership
have identified a minimum of seven projects as priorities, with which they would like KSLP’s
support. These projects include emergency medicine, infectious diseases, surgery, general
medicine, dentistry, mental health and medical and health professions education. A successful
candidate should have the technical knowledge and experience to strategically direct these projects
and to work closely with the senior leadership of Connaught hospital and the individual project
teams to provide advice.
The Clinical Manager will be part of the senior leadership of KSLP, led by the Programme Directior,
which will be responsible for delivering the vision, mission and values of King’s Global Health
Partnerships in Sierra Leone. The Clinical Manager will oversee a multidisciplinary team of between
20 and 25 medical staff mixed between staff and volunteers to deliver a programme of health
system strengthening in conjunction with King’s Sierra Leone Partnership’s key partners in Sierra
Leone; Connaught Hospital, the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences and the Ministry of
Health and Sanitation.
Key responsibilities and objectives of the job:
 Oversee the portfolio of clinical projects, and advise senior leadership on strategy
 Coordinate with other projects to identify and develop synergy between all KSLP
undertakings and ensure they present a holistic approach to improvement
 Maintain strong relationships with hospital administration, medical leadership and other key
partners, ensuring that projects are aligned with partner priorities
 Maintain strong engagement with UK based advisors, and facilitating open lines of
communication between UK advisors and local hospital staff
 Oversee project implementation in consultation with implementation partners in country and
internationally
 Provide strategic advice to key partner institutions
 Manage the senior clinical team to deliver KSLP’s portfolio of projects
 Contribute to grant application, management and compliance processes
 Report to the Country Director
 Monitor and manage the risks of projects, plan contingencies as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
King’s Global Health Partnerships is looking for candidates with the following background:
 Education / qualification and training
o A Medical degree
o Professional registration in home country; Royal College Fellowship (or equivalent)
would be beneficial



Experience
o Substantial and extensive post-qualification experience
o A broad range of relevant hospital-based training
o Specific experience managing clinical improvement projects in low income settings
o Previous work experience in Africa; lengthy experience in Africa would be an
advantage
Personal characteristics / other requirements
o Excellent interpersonal and intercultural skills, as well as confidence working with
and/or managing senior colleagues
o Skilled at multitasking and prioritising, working independently with minimal
supervision, leading and designing projects autonomously.
o A keen interest in hospital systems, audit, medical education and research, rather
than clinical activity alone
o An approach to clinical improvement that incorporates systems improvement,
organizational change and capacity building

WORKING IN SIERRA LEONE
This appointment will be made in Sierra Leone. Whilst the successful applicant may well have
worked in a developing country before, moving to a new country can be difficult. To support this,
King’s Global Health Partnerships will provide new recruits with advice and support prior to their
move and during their time there. The overall package will include:

2 rest + relaxation flights to the UK or equivalent
Up to $100 mobile phone credit per month
Professional registration fees in Sierra Leone for clinical staff

TERMS
The role of Clinical Manager for the King’s Sierra Leone Partnership sits within King’s Global Health
Partnerships for and behalf of King’s College London and King’s Health Partners.
Period of Appointment: Fixed Term: 18 months; future contracts will be 12 months in length
Salary: Grade 6 (£32,277-£35,256 per annum)
Note on appointment: This role is being advertised either as a 6 months volunteering role, or as a
1 year salaried role. Please indicate which you are applying for.
Probation: The typical probation period for this post would be six months.
Annual Leave: 27 working days per annum pro rata (please note the annual leave year runs from
January-December) bank holidays and customary closure days in are in addition to the annual
leave entitlement. Staff receive four additional customary closure days in December. Notification as
to how these days are taken is circulated at the start of the academic year.

This role is part of the post-Ebola KSLP response. It has been developed in conjunction with local
partners and the wider King’s community as is likely to continue to evolve as more input from
various people is received. As a “first generation” post, the role is also likely to evolve over time

updates.
