Page 1 February 2015 — Issue 7 From The Superintendent’s Desk — By Mr. Freeman Seems like every year I begin the February newsletter talking about the weather. I was thinking of using a different lead in for this year’s article, but last weekend had to be some of the nicest weather we have ever had in mid-January. I hope that most of you got a chance to get outside and enjoy . Since we live in the Midwest and in particular in Nebraska, I am sure that we will have a lot more winter weather. Until spring we will just enjoy the good weather days one at a time. WINTER SPORTS/ACTIVITIES The high school winter sports and activity seasons are rapidly approaching the end of their seasons. Home of the Vikings SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS Page 2 By Mr. Freeman In the following few paragraphs, I will try to summarize some of the items that were on the school board meeting agendas the past couple of months. Resignations Debbie Linder, who is currently a fourth grade teacher at Shell Creek, submitted her resignation at the December school board meeting. She has done an outstanding job in teaching students and in working with staff during her career. She has served as a teacher in the Lakeview Community for over 25 years and has represented our school and community in an excellent manner. She will be missed and we would like to wish her the best in her future endeavors. Board Officers and Committees The board elected officers for the 2015 year. They are as follows: President-Keith Runge; Vice-President-Tim Mueller, Secretary-Mary Ann Schreiber & Treasurer-Dan Pabian. The board also approved the committee assignments for the new-year. Americanism/Curriculum (Pabian, Loseke & Schreiber) Building & Grounds (Runge, Mueller & Jaixen) Public Relations (Runge, Loseke & Pabian) Policy (Jaixen, Schreiber & Runge) Budget (Mueller, Pabian & Schreiber) Personnel/Negotiations (Mueller, Jaixen & Loseke) District Affirmative Action Coordinator The board approved the superintendent of schools, Russ Freeman, as the District’s Affirmative Action Coordinator. Part of the duties of this position is publication of the notification of the district’s statement of non-discrimination. 2015 NOTICE OF NON-DISCRIMINATION The Lakeview Community School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, religion, marital status, sex or disability in employment, vocational programs or activities as set forth in compliance with federal and state statutes and regulations. Any persons having inquiries concerning Lakeview Community Schools compliance with Title II, Title IV, Title VI, Title IX and/or Section 504 may contact Russ Freeman, Superintendent, Lakeview Community Schools. SHELL CREEK PROJECT The Shell Creek water project is finally underway. The inside work began over the Christmas Holiday and the outside work began this week. It is my understanding the boiler, which will help with the HVAC system, should be installed in the very near future. The water filtration system will take a little more time to be installed and functional. Your patience with this improvement has been appreciated. QUESTIONS & CONCERNS As we are starting a new calendar year, I will once again ask you to feel free to communicate with me about any questions or concerns you might have concerning the school district. We have a good school, but are always striving to become better. This can be accomplished with your willingness to share your thoughts and ideas. I can be contacted at school (402-562-8518) or on my cell (402-677-0567). Page 3 Supporting Those Who Need Support, Changes in ISDF Steve Borer, Principal 7-12 Starting in the 2nd semester we are making some changes to our ISDF program. For those of you who don’t know what ISDF is, I will try to explain. ISDF stands for Increase Success, Decrease Failure. ISDF was created three years ago as an intervention to provide more support and motivation for our students who were struggling academically. ISDF works like this, after the failing list is pulled on Monday morning, students who are on the failing list must attend an ISDF period on Thursday and Friday of the same week. The ISDF period runs 3:09-3:33, a 25 minute period at the end of the day on Thursday and Friday. Every student is assigned a Viking time teacher who supports and helps the students during their ISDF period. The ratio of students to teacher is very low and teachers are often able to provide one-on- one-assistance for their ISDF students. During ISDF students are able to receive support, time and access to teachers so they can succeed and get off the failing list. Students who are not on the failing list are free to go on Thursday and Friday at 3:09, thus there is motivation for every student to stay off the failing list. ISDF has operated using the above format for the past three years. Over the past three years we have kept track of our data and the data suggests the number of students on the failing list has decreased. Thus ISDF has been successful for many of our students. However, in order to be fair we have had some students who have been on the failing list in multiple subjects who are still struggling within the current system. Therefore we are creating a few changes to ISDF to support those who need it most. We are now creating a Level 2, ISDF. Level 2, ISDF will provide more time, motivation and support for those who need it most. The current or past ISDF system we have used will now be considered Level 1, ISDF. Level 2, ISDF will add more intervention and will work like this: When the failing list is pulled on Monday morning, students who are on the failing list in 2 or more subjects these students must attend Level 2, ISDF. Level 2, ISDF will run from Tuesday until the following Monday during the last period of the day, which runs from 3:09-3:33. Level 2, ISDF students will be provided more time, motivation and support. Level 2, ISDF students are assigned a specific Level 2, ISDF teacher who will help support, and provide assistance to the student which will help them get off the failing list and help them experience success. If you have any questions about our changes to the ISDF intervention please feel free to give me a call. 6th Annual Lakeview Academic/Career Fair By Steve Borer, Principal 7-12 Lakeview Jr.-Sr. High school is planning to host the 6th Annual Career/Academic Night on Feb 2nd, 2015. The college and career fair will be held at the same time as Parent-Teacher conferences from 5:00-8:00pm. Don’t miss out, it is a great opportunity!! Colleges, businesses and the armed services will set up booths in the commons area and will provide an opportunity for students and parents to visit and ask questions. For younger students it is a perfect time to start asking questions about the requirements needed for potential colleges or the skills and education needed for particular jobs in business. There is evidence to support that the more exposure and the earlier parents and students begin to talk about, explore, and seek out potential career and college options the easier it is to make these decisions when the time comes. For older students it is a beneficial time to ask questions before you make any final decisions about life after high school. It gives you a platform to help solidify your decisions and begin the transition into the next stages of life. We are very excited about the opportunity to provide this experience for our students, parents and patrons. We are also excited about the opportunity to connect with businesses in our community and allow them to share their needs to a stakeholder audience. Students and parents alike may begin to make preparations for their future goals! If you are a business owner in our district and would like to set up a booth on Feb 2nd, please contact me as soon as possible there is limited space available. If you have any questions about the Career/Academic Night please feel free to call me or Mrs. Lyons at (564-8518). I had done watercolor before, I was just open to let my hands do the work and make it into what it was supposed to be until I was satisfied and Mrs. Noonan was proud." Page 25 In and Around Christ Lutheran Lutheran School February 2015 — Issue 7 December was a busy month for Christ Lutheran students. In addition to their regular classroom subjects, they also were rehearsing their parts for the Christmas Program. The program was held on Sunday, Dec. 21. The students did a great job telling the wonderful story of Jesus’ birth. Not only did the angels, shepherds, and Wiseman celebrate the joyous news, but also the sheep, rooster, donkey, dove, and cows. Sending His one and only Son to save us from our sins - What an amazing way for God to show His love for us! January has brought the start of classes again. It is hard to believe it is already the third quarter. The AR party for the second quarter was held on January 9. The theme was “Snow Fun”. Because of the extremely cold temperatures, the games were held in the gym with a little imagination needed for the snow. Students made marshmallow shooters from cups and balloons. Marshmallows were the snowballs. Students shot the “snowballs” at each other from behind their “forts” (mats). Even though the marshmallow shooters were a bit hard to use, everyone had fun trying. Pin the nose on the snowman as well as catching the snowball (marshmallow) in your mouth were also played. After the snow fun in the gym, students enjoyed a hot chocolate bar where they got to make their own January 25-31 Lutheran Schools’ Week! Mr. Freeman visited our school to hand out the BUG Awards.
