PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE
The first week back from spring break has come and gone. We’re now in a fun but hectic time of
the year. The calendar gets more and more full as we get closer to the end of school. In the next
week, we will be handing out registration cards to our 7th graders for 8th grade and our 8th graders
will be getting registration information from the high school at their Open House on Thursday
night (see the information below).
Please encourage your students to stay focused on their schoolwork during this time. With so
many events and activities, it can be hard for students to prioritize. In these last few weeks, it is
important to check in with them frequently and occasionally remind them to slow down. (Why do
I feel like I need to be reading my own advice here?!) If you are worried that your student is
struggling or is not as focused as you like, direct contact with the teacher (via email, a scheduled
meeting, or a phone call) can often produce great results!
JOHN GYSELBRECHT SCHOLARSHIP
Many of you have asked what could be done to honor John Gyselbrecht and all he has done for
our students, school, and community. A scholarship fund has been started in his name through
Cuesta College.
Donations to the fund can be made online
at http://weblink.donorperfect.com/cuestafoundation, which opens a general giving page. On
the form, there is an obvious place for people to specify that you want your donation applied
to the John Gyselbrecht Scholarship.
If you choose to donate via check, the check should be made out to: Cuesta College Foundation,
and mailed to PO Box 8106, San Luis Obispo, CA 93403. In the memo section please write
John Gyselbrecht Scholarship.
HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION:
The High School will host parents and students of incoming 9th graders at 5:30PM in the new
gym for a meeting about selecting high school classes. Our students will be visiting the high school
in May, but this is the opportunity for parents to hear from the administration and counselors about
class choices for students.
Parents and students of current 9-12th grade students are invited to Tiger Fest, the SLOHS style
Open House on Thursday, April 23 2015 at 6:00pm, immediately following the parent/student
meeting. The open house will give incoming freshmen and their families the opportunity to see all
of the great clubs and programs SLOHS has to offer!

INCREDIBLE SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY:
NOW REGISTERING!!! (Flyers available in the LAMS office- Space is LIMITED)
This year, Laguna Middle School will be hosting the YMCA Youth Institute Summer Camp. This 5
week camp begins with a week of sleepaway camp followed by 4 weeks of amazing learning and
fun. Students at the camp will produce their own magazine and movies over the course of the
summer and will screen their movies at the Youth Institute film festival at the end. Student films
from the Cambria Youth Institute have been won at the SLO International film festival and others.
The camp will run from July 6- August 7 and will be from 9am-3pm Monday-Friday (The first
week, July 6-10 is the sleepaway camp portion with students camping in Mammoth Lakes for 4
nights). We do ask that students commit to the full 5 weeks of the program as they will be working
in production teams and will be developing their skills in working with one another.
This camp is open to students currently in grades 6-8. We are giving priority to students who are or
will be attending Laguna Middle School next year. There are only 20 spaces available in this camp
and the cost is $750 (only $150 a week for full time camp and a week away!) and financial
assistance is available. Signups will be coming soon. For more information, contact Dan Hartzell at
dhartzell@sloymca.org or you can register on line here.
