PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE:
This week we said goodbye to John Gyselbrecht who passed away due to gastric cancer. Mr.
Gyselbrecht was a beloved math teacher at LAMS for many years and also taught at Hawthorne
and Pacific Beach. John was truly one of the greats- a genuine, kind and caring man who
managed not only to see the best in all of those around him, but had a talent for drawing it out of
others and helping them grow to their potential. John was a master teacher and connected with all
of his students. He reached them on their level and believed in them. He cared enough about his
students to demand their best and knew them well enough to get it out of them. If your student
was lucky enough to have him as a teacher, you probably already know he had a great sense of
humor and loved coming to his job every day.
Our staff will miss the talent, wit, loyalty and friendship Mr. Gyselbrecht brought to LAMS.
Even as he fought gastric cancer, he continued to give to others raising over $50,000 to fight the
disease. He inspired our students to raise more in our penny wars than we ever had. We continue
to be inspired by his goodness and the generosity of spirit he shared with all of us. We will miss
him.
WALL OF FAME:
Each week our teachers select students who have been exemplary of the hard work and positive
energy we want to see in our classes. Students’ names are added to the “Wall of Fame” just outside
the activity quad. Congratulations are in order for the following students: Benito Trejo, Nayeli

INCREDIBLE SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY:
NOW REGISTERING!!!
This year, Laguna Middle School will be hosting the YMCA Youth Institute Summer Camp. This 5
week camp begins with a week of sleepaway camp followed by 4 weeks of amazing learning and
fun. Students at the camp will produce their own magazine and movies over the course of the
summer and will screen their movies at the Youth Institute film festival at the end. Student films
from the Cambria Youth Institute have been winners at the SLO International film festival and
others.
The camp will run from July 6- August 7 and will be from 9am-3pm Monday-Friday (The first
week, July 6-10 is the sleepaway camp portion with students camping in Mammoth Lakes for 4
nights). We do ask that students commit to the full 5 weeks of the program as they will be working
in production teams and will be developing their skills in working with one another.
This camp is open to students currently in grades 6-8. We are giving priority to students who are or
will be attending Laguna Middle School next year. There are only 20 spaces available in this camp
and the cost is $750 (only $150 a week for full time camp and a week away!) and financial
assistance is available. Signups will be coming soon. For more information, contact Dan Hartzell at
dhartzell@sloymca.org or you can register on line here.
STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
San Luis Obispo Mayor Jan Marx is looking forward to personally presenting the "Mayor's Award
for Community Service " to deserving Lancers in June.
Has your son or daughter completed 30 hours or more of community service this school year?
Please make sure that the "Verification Form for Community Service" is filled out and submitted to
Mila Vujovich-La Barre in Room G14 by Friday, May 15, 2015 so that he/she can receive this
coveted award. The form is available in Room G14, in the Counseling Office and on the school
website.
Spring break is a terrific time to spend an hour or more assisting non-profits in our community.
Many thanks to the compassionate students who have already invested so much time and energy in
worthy causes!
Remember, in the words of Margaret Mead "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Thanks for having a heart and lending a hand!

Storytelling is a wonderful way to stay connected with your kids.
Read aloud together, share a memory from your childhood or make up
a humorous tale. Enjoy the moments and have a peaceful break.
Sincerely, Mrs. Schwoerer
