The Lancer Lines…May 8, 2015 Laguna Middle School John Calandro, Principal 11050 Los Osos Valley Road San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 805-596-4055 PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE This week was teacher appreciation week. Our PTA, parents, and students did an outstanding job honoring our teachers and showing them how much they are appreciated. Mr. Schalde and I have received many kind words from parents over the past two years about the wonderful things happening at Laguna Middle School. We love to hear this and know that it is because of the quality of our teachers. Your students are fortunate to have teachers who love being here. LAMS teachers know middle school kids and truly enjoy having the opportunity to work with them every day. Our teachers are dedicated, thoughtful, caring individuals who have chosen working with this age group as their calling. It is the goal of all of our teachers to bring out the best in our students. We watch them struggle, help them when they fall, work to inspire them daily, and celebrate their success. With only two short years to accomplish the task of preparing them for high school, we know we occasionally have an uphill battle. We persevere because we know our work is important. Your children are important and we love being a part of their lives. Thank you to all of those who reached out to show appreciation this week. Please know the feeling is mutual. We are proud to work with your children. WALL OF FAME: Each week our teachers select students who have been exemplary of the hard work and positive energy we want to see in our classes. On Friday, May 1st, six amazing Laguna athletes competed at the Special Olympics held at Cuesta College. Each competed and medaled in 2 track and field events. DJ Smith, Jack Overland and Wyatt competed in the 50m run and shot put events, while Alexis Alvarez, David Leonard and Reggie competed in the 25m assisted walk and softball throw. Each were inspiring to watch and fun to cheer for. We were also lucky to have some wonderful 7th and 8th grade peers stand by our athletes to encourage and support them throughout the day. Our motto this year was “Nothing’s Impossible; I’m Possible”! This held true as all of our students are a great example of how working hard and never giving up makes anything possible. Congratulations, once again, to all of our Laguna athletes!!! You make us proud! EIGHTH GRADE END-OF-YEAR PICNIC AND PARTY Parents, if you are able to help out with the 8th grade picnic, we have a sign-up genius started. Check it out here: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0A4EABAC28AAF94-8thgrade/ We’ll be having another 8th grade party planning meeting on Wednesday, 5/13 from 6-7 in the staff lounge. Sign-up geniuses will be coming soon for food, games, and decoration committees. We need all parents willing to help out to join our committees. If you would like your name added to a committee list, please contact Suzanne Pericoli spericoli@slcusd.org and she’ll put your name down to help. PARENT SURVEY It’s time for our annual parent survey. The school site council uses the information from the survey to set priorities for next school year and the teachers and staff use it to give us information about how those who complete the survey perceive how we’re doing. You can access the survey via our website or link directly to it here in English and here in Spanish. NO PLACE FOR HATE Members from Laguna Middle School’s Friday Night Live (FNL) chapter attended the AntiDefamation League’s No Place for Hate Reception on Wednesday, April 29th. LAMS FNL earned the No Place for Hate accreditation on behalf of Laguna Middle School by completing three campuswide activities (“Positivity Chain”, “Random Acts of Kindness Challenge Week”, and “Mix-It-Up Lunch”) promoting positivity, inclusivity, and diversity. With this award, LAMS is showing they are actively encouraging the student body to build tolerance, respect others, and celebrate diversity! Congratulations LAMS FNL! DISECTION LAB The 8th grade cow eye dissection took place yesterday. Mrs. Hoffman, Mrs. Jones, and Mr. Cossey’s students got to investigate all of the structures of the eye as they performed their dissection. Students were initially apprehensive, then intrigued, then fascinated by the eye and its inner workings. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers for coming in and helping out. We could not have done it without you! 2015 Lompoc Kiwanis Track & Field Championship Results: The Laguna Track & Field team traveled to Lompoc this past Sunday to compete in the 2015 Lompoc Kiwanis Track & Field Championships.
