BB&T To Be Honored As “Titan of Business & Philanthropy”
at 2015 Leukemia Ball Presented by PhRMA
February 12, 2015 (Washington, D.C.) - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) will honor BB&T Bank as a
Titan of Business & Philanthropy at the 2015 Leukemia Ball, Presented by PhRMA, on March 28, 2015. The
Titan of Business & Philanthropy Award honors individuals or companies who are recognized leaders in their
industries and equally known for making an extraordinary difference in their communities.
“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is pleased to recognize BB&T Bank for their partnership in the fight to
end blood cancers,” said Beth Gorman, Executive Director of the National Capital Area Chapter. “Their
corporate commitment to volunteerism and support of LLS has had a tremendous impact on the lives of our
patients and their families. It’s partners like BB&T that get us one step closer to a world without blood
cancers.”
BB&T has supported the Leukemia Ball over the past several years through Group President, Dan Waetjen,
who served as co-chair in 2014 and Sr. co-chair in 2015. In this leadership role, Waetjen steers a talented
volunteer committee as they work to advance the mission of LLS by selling sponsorships and tables. This past
fall, BB&T also made LLS the beneficiary of their annual 5K and 1K fun run, increasing LLS’s exposure to
members of the local business community. In addition to its support of LLS, BB&T supports many local
communities, as well as national and international aid efforts. Through The BB&T Lighthouse Project, a
nationwide community services program, BB&T associates have collectively donated more than 325,000
volunteer hours to local charities, supported more than 6,600 community projects, and touched the lives of
more than 9.7 million people.
“BB&T is a solid corporate citizen and is committed to supporting the communities in which we live and work,”
said Dan Waetjen, Group President and 2015 Leukemia Ball Sr. co-chair. “LLS’s mission to fight blood cancers is
one that is very important to many of our employees and we are honored to receive this prestigious
recognition. However, we know there is more work to be done and look forward to remaining a committed
partner in LLS’s work to fund life-saving cancer research throughout the world.”
The Leukemia Ball will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
The event is expected to raise $3.1 million for LLS’s mission: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and
myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Sponsorship opportunities are available
at a variety of levels. For more information, visit www.leukemiaball.org.
