San Fernando Valley Award for Nonfiction
2016 Guidelines and Entry Form
The Oviatt Friends of the Library at California State University, Northridge, will give an annual award of
at least $750 to a writer who has published a significant work of non-fiction dealing directly with the
region of the San Fernando Valley. An Honorable Mention award of $250 may also presented if
warranted. If no Honorable Mention Award is given, the main award will be in the amount of $1000.
The purpose of the award is to recognize important contributions to non-fiction writing about the San
Fernando Valley and to promote research and writing related to the region. Judges for this award
include select members of the Friends of the Library Board, members of the faculty at California State
University, Northridge, and a member of the Oviatt Library faculty or staff.
Eligibility Requirements









Work must be an original, non-fiction publication produced in book format.

Acceptable subject categories include: history, the social and behavioral sciences, physical and life sciences, biography and autobiography, and non-fiction works dealing with the humanities.
The subject of the work relates directly to the San Fernando Valley.
Self-published works are eligible.
Works must have a publication date no earlier than 2011.
Works originally published in a language other than English must be submitted in translation.
Editors are ineligible.
Anthologies written by multiple authors are ineligible.
Electronically published works should be submitted as bound, paper printouts that include full
publication information.




Works may be submitted by the author, publisher, or any member of the public.

All entries must be postmarked by December 1, 2015.

All submissions must include: a completed entry form, five copies of the work, and a brief (500 words or less) biographical statement about the author.
Awards


Winner(s) will be announced at a reception at CSUN in the Spring of 2016.
Winners will be provided the opportunity to speak and/or read from their work at the award
ceremony.
