The People of Linden Hills
Meet Kristin Tombers, Owner of Clancey's Meats & Fish
By Carol Clemens
Kristin was born in Duluth, grew up at Fort Snelling, and then
Minneapolis and Richfield. She traveled the country for over 10
years, living in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York...came back
25 years ago to Minneapolis.
We asked Kristin where her "foodie" roots began:
Mom had a community garden when we were little...so we all
learned an early love of planting and eating ripe tomatoes off the
vine. Years later, working in LA and Philly, I learned about fancy food,
wine and beer pairings, plating, tasting; all while gravitating toward
gardening and real farm raised food. Really love to read about food
and talk about food—love to hear people's food stories!
I’d known for a few years that the old Linden Hills Meat Shop owner
wanted to sell his business and move on. After awhile, it seemed like
a chance to go back to old school butchery; so we made the leap,
took a huge chance, bought the business and turned it into a locally
sourced meat shop - a good old-fashioned style market. That was 12
years ago.
We took up the tradition of grilling out as all the previous owners
had. It's one of the most fulfilling things we do, hard work, but to be
part of the community celebrations that we all take part to create is
a great reward. It’d be nice if we could have these 'street festivals'
every weekend through the summer.
In addition, it's very important to all of us in the shop that we work
with so many farmers who treat their animals well and with respect.
It makes what we do incredibly gratifying. It's also great to be able to
talk to people about the farmers behind the food we provide.
NOTE: Find Kristin and the Clancey’s crew grilling in front of the shop
on Saturday, May 16 and all day at the Festival at Linden Hills Park
on Sunday, May 17.
9th Annual BLEND Awards
Submission deadline is July 31
Submissions are now being accepted for the
BLEND Awards, recognizing homes and businesses
that blend into their Minneapolis neighborhoods.
The BLEND Award encourages and rewards home
owners, architects, and builders who aesthetically
blend newly remodeled or constructed homes
and businesses into the existing neighborhood. In
addition, EcoBLEND Badges will be presented to
recipients who apply eco-friendly design and
sustainable building practices to their projects.
More information can be found at
BLENDaward.org. The annual awards ceremony
will be held at Fulton Brewery on September 28
and will feature keynote speaker Larry Millett,
famed Minneapolis architectural historian and
author of Minnesota’s Own.

Home Energy Squad Success
Linden Hills Resident Enjoying Her Comfortable and Efficient Home
Since having a Home Energy Squad enhanced visit, Linden Hills resident Rene
Goepfrich has been living in a more comfortable and energy-efficient home.
Rene learned about the program through her daughter and decided to
schedule a visit because she was concerned about wall insulation.
“We purchased our home in 1962
and had the upstairs redone in the
70s. I was going to have some
stucco work done and I figured it
was a good time to take a look at
the insulation levels in case wall
insulation was needed. Turns out I
needed air sealing, attic and wall
insulation work.”
During the 2.5 hour visit two energy consultants visited her home to install
energy saving materials, perform a blower door test to measure her home for
air leaks, check the insulation levels in her walls and attic, and conduct a
safety check on her heating system and water heater. At the end of the visit,
she received a quote for insulation work that was needed and list of
contractors to choose from. “The process was easy. The crew was great and
gave me all the information I needed about cost, contractors and rebates so it
was really easy to do.”
Rene then went on to complete the recommended insulation work after the
visit and has noticed the difference. “The room I watch TV in and the room I
read in are definitely more comfortable than they were before I had wall
insulation.”
The LHiNC Environment & Sustainability Committee is now buying down the
cost of a Home Energy Squad Enhanced visit from $70 to $35! A new feature
of the visits is an infrared camera inspection of your home, which provides an
accurate view of where air leaks are located around your home. Get
comfortable and start saving by scheduling your home visit today. Call Beth at
612-335-5874 for an appointment.

Help Pull Garlic Mustard
Garlic mustard out-competes tree seedlings and
other native vegetation with adverse effects on
the few remaining natural areas in our Park
system, including the Roberts Bird Sanctuary and
William Berry Woods. Help us repeat last year's
success in eliminating flowering plants at both
sites, to help slow the spread of this invasive
plant.
Bags are provided, but bring your own gloves.
Look for signs leading to the pull sites -- at the
visitors shelter at Roberts and at the picnic table
at William Berry Woods.
At Roberts Bird Sanctuary:
- Wednesdays, May 13 and 20; 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
- Sundays, May 24 and June 7; 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
At William Berry Woods:
- Wednesday, May 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to noon

St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2914 W. 44th St
Stop by to see the new rain gardens, recently installed with assistance from
Minnehaha Creek Watershed District and Linden Hills Neighborhood Council
(and many, many church bake sales!). These rain gardens manage storm
water and prevent erosion. They capture runoff, allowing it to seep slowly
into the ground, recharge our groundwater supplies and create wildlife
habitat through native plantings. The rain gardens also protect Minnehaha
Creek and Lake Harriet by filtering pollutants from the storm water.
All are welcome on May 17. Enter at 44th & Vincent and walk down the grassy
slope to the church’s back yard.
