FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well! It’s hard to believe but
Kindergarten Registration has begun for the 2015-16 school
year! I’ve already seen a few future Bobcats come into
Machias with their parents to register. Enrolling students now
is extremely helpful in helping us plan for future staffing. If
you know of parents in the community who have not registered their children for next year, please encourage them to do
so!
Kindergarten teachers and I will be holding a Kindergarten
Orientation on Thursday, April 23rd at 6:30 pm in our school
library. During this time parents will have the opportunity to
see the classrooms, learn about the curriculum, and have
questions addressed. We are requesting parents do not bring
their children to this Orientation.
This next year my own children will start 3rd, 1st, and Preschool! It is amazing how fast time goes. For many parents,
sending their child off to Kindergarten can be an emotional
experience. However, no matter the transition you can rest
assured we have a wonderful staff at Machias Elementary. Your child will be welcomed with open arms!
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Mr. Ryan
Principal
Machias Elementary School
OUR HEALTH ROOM NEEDS
MORE CLOTHES!
Our school Health Room is in need of donations of athletic sweats or leggings for
both boys and girls in sizes 10-14. If you
have any to spare, we would appreciate
your thinking of the Health Room. Thank
you!

SPRING BOOK FAIR!
Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to our library March 30-April 2. Classes will have an opportunity to browse the

reading.
Also available: Online shopping! Go to http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/machiaselementaryschool to shop the
online book fair. Like shopping at the fair, your online purchases also benefit the Machias library. Online purchases are
delivered to the school about a week after the fair ends.
To volunteer at the book fair, please call Lynne Charlot at 360-563-4892 or email Mrs. Begley at bobbi.begley@sno.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Kindergarten registration for the 2015-2016 school year
is in progress at the district's elementary schools. Both
a half day program and a full day, tuition-based program
are being offered. Students will need to be 5 years old
by midnight of August 31, 2015 in order to be eligible
for kindergarten. Please bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization dates, and proof of residency when
you come in to register.
For more information, please call Machias School at 360
-563-4825.
FROM THE NURSE
Parents, please remember our procedure “No shots, No school” as we think about the new 2015-2016
school year! The Snohomish Health District is moving forward with plans to permanently close their
immunization clinics in Everett and Lynnwood by June 30, 2015. Therefore, these sites will no longer
be available to you for administration of vaccines. The SHD health officer stated:
“Healthcare reform and increased access to insurance have dramatically changed the
way people get many health care services, including immunizations,” said Dr. Gary
Goldbaum, health officer and director for the Snohomish Health District. “Snohomish
County is fortunate to have a growing number of healthcare providers and pharmacies
providing immunization services. Now that we have this added capacity, it’s the right
time to transition our resources into other areas where we can have a greater impact
on the community as a whole.”
Snohomish School District 201 and Snohomish Health District work together for a safer and healthier
community through disease prevention, health promotion and protection from environmental threats.
To read more about the SHD and for important health information, visit www.snohd.org. Residents
needing immunization records after June 30 will be able to request them through the Vital Records
section. More information can be found at www.snohd.org/Healthy-Living/Clinic-Services.

Student cooking contest returns
The district's annual Future Chefs Challenge/Kids Can Cook Cooking Contest, sponsored by the Food Services
Dept., is back. District 4th - 6th grade students are invited to submit recipes for their favorite after-school
snacks. The recipes, which must be submitted by Wednesday, April 1, do not have to be original. They can be
family recipes or from cookbooks, the Internet, etc. Recipe submittal forms are available at your student's
school.
Student finalists will be selected from the submitted recipes and will be invited to prepare their creations at
Glacier Peak High School. Families, teachers and principals will be invited to taste these culinary masterpieces
at a Friday, May 15 event. A panel of judges will select the grand prize winners. Past award categories have
included:
•
•
•
•
Health-conscious foods
Simple, kid-friendly preparation
Fun food
Judge’s choice
All finalists will receive a framed certificate, a recipe book of all of the finalists’
recipes, a chef’s coat, as well as a medal. Grand prize winners will receive an
additional award.
Transportation will not be provided for the cook-off. Kids will need to be dropped
off and picked up at Glacier Peak High School. In addition, students will be supervised by kitchen staff during the food production to help ensure that safe food
practices are followed and that no one gets hurt.
For more information, call the Food Service Dept. at (360) 563-7298.
