From their arrival in Dundalk in 1861, the Marist Fathers have educated many generations of Dundalk students. Indeed, as Fr. Jimmy McElroy, Marist Priest and Chaplain to the College said, the boarding school, which operated up to 1983 educated students from all parts of Ireland and abroad. “The long list of illustrious past pupils bears testament to the quality of the education, which has long been a feature of a Catholic school in the Marist tradition”, he said. Indeed, the strong ethos of Pastoral Care, which is a Marist core value, is as noticeably vibrant today as it was in 1861. Over the years the College has gone from strength to strength, becoming co-educational in 1990 when the first girls were enrolled. As time passed the outdated plant in the old school curtailed the desire of the management and staff to broaden the curriculum. However, as the Principal Mr. Mc Ginley outlined, April 2016 will be a “catalyst for change and the educational landscape of Dundalk will be significantly altered”. The incredibly futuristic new school will incorporate the latest technologies and provide the most modern education facilities available in the country. The addition of Music and Technical Graphics to the curriculum two years ago, in anticipation of the new school opening, will be followed by the introduction of Technology, Metalwork and Materials Technology Wood, in a deliberate strategy to broaden the educational opportunities which will be available to the future students of the College. The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme is being actively investigated and the Leaving Certificate Applied programme will be introduced in September 2016. With its students excelling in all areas of the curriculum, their vibrancy and confidence is tangible. Whether on the field of play, debating, culinary excellence, mathematical prowess, artistic achievement, or winning scholarships, the students of St Mary’s College have time and time again proved themselves both nationally and internationally.
