PRINCIPAL’S NEWS:
Kia Ora mai ano
Welcome to term 2!
The holidays were very busy for me going to meetings about
our new school. One thing I did manage to buy was a decent
pair of gumboots for when I walk around our site during the
meetings! Riki also bought a pair, (much fancier than mine),
but her sons have made her promise not to wear them to
rugby when they play!
My meetings involved talking about things like landscaping
and playgrounds, in addition to attending our turning of the
sod ceremony with the Minister of Education Hekia Parata.
She was very impressed that we had a good turnout of
children, staff and parents at such short notice during the
holidays. The ceremony went really well and, despite the rain,
I think everyone enjoyed being part of it, and got a sense of
excitement from being on site and seeing all the work going
on for our new school.
We even managed to get on TV - even though TV1 focused
mostly on the Highfield subdivision or lack of it! We barely
focused on Highfield as even being in our zone when we
predicted numbers for our new school. It is part of three other
school’s zones. CTV had a better article which starred Board of
Trustees member Paul Reeves!
This week we had a beautiful ANZAC assembly run by our
Year 7 and 8 students. They spoke really well about the
ANZACs and shared some of their work.
This has been a very engaging unit of work for the
intermediate part of our school with the children showing

This term is another action packed one, with so many learning
opportunities for the children both inside and outside of the
classroom. Individual teams will send home newsletters
outlining specific activities.
Cross country training was scheduled to begin this week,
however, this has been delayed due to the rain. We ask that
Year 5 to 8 children bring a different pair of shoes other than
their black uniform ones and an old T shirt for daily running
practice once it starts. Cross country training will go on for the
next 3 weeks.
some real insight into the First World War and the impact it
had on the families of those soldiers.
Enjoy the long weekend! Let’s hope the weather improves
and we get the last rays of sunshine before winter sets in.
Ma te wa
All our children got something from the children's
presentation. From our little 5 and 6 year olds making ANZAC
wreaths, the delicious smell of ANZAC biscuits wafting from
the kitchen today, baked by the children in Tui, to the Pukeko
team who enjoyed a visit to the Air Force Museum this week,
everyone has been involved in thinking and talking about the
ANZAC centenary. What a cute photo!

SCHOOL UNIFORM – BLACK SHOES:
A reminder to please ensure that your
child wears the correct uniform to school.
Our school uniform shoes are black, so
please make sure your child wears sensible black shoes to school not
coloured striped ones. Please make sure your child also wears black
socks. Thanks for your support.
VOMITING AND DIAHHOREA BUG:
It appears that we have the vomiting and diahhorea bug doing the
rounds throughout the school. If your children get this bug, it is
imperative that you keep them away from school and adhere to the
48 hour Ministry of Health ruling and keep them off school until 48
hours after the last symptoms have disappeared. This is the only
way we can break the cycle of the bug. Many thanks
NAIL POLISH NOT PERMITTED AT SCHOOL:
Please remember that your child is not allowed to
wear nail polish at school. If children wear nail polish
at the weekend, please make sure this is removed
before they come to school.

CANTERBURY SWIMMING RESULTS
As a school Marshland prides its self on our academic, cultural and sporting achievements. Although at
times small by number compared to the much larger local schools we can certainly punch above our weight.
This once again was very evident at the Canterbury Swimming Sports.
To participate, children needed to have achieved at school and zone level. They then swim off against the
very best Canterbury and Westland enters.

ASB SCHOOL BANKING
At ASB, we recognize a growing need to educate New Zealand children on the importance of financial literacy and to
encourage good savings habits at a young age.
At Marshland school we offer the ASB Children’s Banking Programme. This allows children to save and bank their savings at
school each week.
Should you wish to register your child with this programme please collect a brochure from the school office.
If your child has an existing ASB account please complete section 1 of the application form and return it to your school office.
For a new ASB account please complete the application form in full (2 pages) and return to the school office.
Once an ASB account is established your child will receive an exciting ASB banking pack. When your child has money to bank they put their envelope
into the school banking box which is located in the school office. Attached to these envelopes is a receipt that you keep at home.
Marshland School’s banking day is every Friday.

Monday 20 July - Friday 25 September - (10 weeks) 100 half days
Monday 12 October - Wednesday 16
December - (10 weeks) 92 half days
TOTAL: 384 half days (As set by MOE)
CAR PARKING AND CYCLISTS:
Parents - please watch out for cyclists when you open your car doors.
Look over your
shoulder behind you, as well as in your rear vision and wing mirrors before you open your car doors. Do not open your
car doors without thoroughly checking that the way is clear. It only takes a moment to check and thus avoid a potential
accident.
CAR PARKING – please do not park outside Fundamentals Pre-School:
The pre-school across the road has requested that Marshland school parents please refrain from parking their cars in the
Fundamental Car Parks. If parents have a younger sibling attending the pre-school, that is fine of course, but if not, you
should not be parking there. Fundamentals have parents with young babies who need to park immediately outside the
building, especially at the busy collection and drop off times (8.30-9am and 2.30 to 3pm). There are tow away signs in place
and these will be enforced if Marshland parents continue to park there. There are plenty of car parks behind the church that
you can use.
Many thanks
