A blend of flavors, both healthy & delicious, at Fins
BY SEAN O’BRIEN
NIGHT AND DAY
COVER
Some of the Jersey Shore’s best
cuisine comes in the form of Mexican
food with a twist, and Fins Tropicali
Cuisine is the perfect example of
delicious food that is perfectly
representative of the Jersey Shore
attitude.
Fins Tropicali Cuisine has three locations: 120 Main Street in Bradley
Beach, 1930 Route 88 in Brick, and the
third — and newest spot — located in
Sea Girt Square, on the corner of Old
Mill Road and Route 35 in Wall.
The first Fins, the Bradley Beach
location, opened in 2003 when
longtime friends Shawn Ryan and Pat
Cuozzo decided it was time to bring
tuna tacos to the Jersey Shore.
The inspiration for Fins stems from
far more than just Pacific West Coast
and Californian cuisine. Ryan attended
Johnson and Wales University in
Providence, Rhode Island, and Cuozzo
attended the Culinary Institute of
America in New York. At their
respective institutes, they learned the
ins and outs of culinary artistry from
several regions across the country and
around the world.
“Though the influence of Californian
and Hawaiian cuisine are pretty
obvious, we also looked to places in
FEATURE

the south like the Outer Banks, Virginia
Beach, and even the Caribbean for
inspiration. These places, specifically
the Caribbean, have always had a
reputation for serving up good food, so
we wanted to bring that tradition as
far north to Jersey as we could,” Ryan
said.
Ryan and Cuozzo are always looking
to expand their business, and Fins is
becoming one of the household names
at the Jersey Shore. They opened the
Brick location in 2006 and the Sea Girt
location in 2012, and business couldn’t
be better.
The atmosphere at Fins exemplifies
that of a beach bar in California. It is
loud and colorful, but at the same time
more than inviting.
“We pride ourselves on having a
great team of employees that are
respectful and genuinely nice people in
order to create as comfortable an
APRIL 2, 2015 PAGE 14 | NIGHT & DAY MAGAZINE
experience for our customers as
possible,” Ryan said.
And customers are more than
comfortable at fins.
A few weeks ago, Ryan said, a
group of women came in when it was
snowing. They had just returned from a
trip to Florida, only to be greeted by
snow on the first day of spring.
“Well,” he said to them, “we’re glad
you ladies came out in the snow to
support us.”
To which the women replied, “We
always come here — it always feels
like summer at Fins.”
Another great aspect of the Fins
experience and the inviting
atmosphere is that they reach out to
customers of all ages. You might look
into Fins at any given time and see a
group of teenagers, a family with small
children, and older couples, all at once.
“Some of the customers that were
in here 12 years ago when we opened
are bringing their children here today,”
Ryan said.
The food served at Fins promises to
be some of the best in its category, not
only because the menu was designed
by two culinary masters, but because
the menu offers a significant amount
of healthy options.
“Yes,” Ryan said, “there are choices
on the menu that are less healthy than
others, but we really do try our best to
give customers as many healthy
choices as possible.”
The food you get at Fins is tasty and
healthy. Considering the food is also
reasonably priced, Fins hit the trifecta
in terms of food.
“We really try our best to compete
with higher-end restaurants with our
menu,” said Ryan. “We want to offer a
place where customers can enjoy
healthy food choices that are expertly
crafted without having to break the
bank to get the food they want and deserve.”
With its excellent choices and
inviting atmosphere, Fins remains
popular year round — partially
because it evokes summertime even in
the harshest of winters.
“Every business, for the most part,
suffers at the Jersey Shore in the
wintertime,” Ryan said. “We are
eternally grateful to our loyal
customers who come out in the cold
to enjoy our food. Our takeout options
are more popular in the winter time
because people can sit and enjoy the
warmth and comfort of their own
homes, but they are also welcomed to
enjoy the warm vibes at our
restaurants, as well.”
Fins is a great place to enjoy a quick
bite to eat because they turn out your
orders quickly. It is also a cool place to
sit with friends and enjoy some food
and drinks. Fins restaurants do not sell
alcoholic beverages, but instead allow
customers to bring their own
alcoholic beverages, or as Ryan and
the rest of his team like to say, “Bring
your own fun!”
And fun is in the atmosphere
created at each location. The Wall
location, for example, has many high
and low tables and is decorated in
bright blue and green colors. With
surfboards and other shore aesthetics
on the walls, you will surely feel like
you entered a surf shop that
specializes in food rather than surfing
gear. Reggae and other beach-themed
music plays over the loud speakers,
further affirming that you’re enjoying
an authentic shore experience.
There is really a lot to choose from
at Fins Tropicali Cuisine.
The Fins-eteezers are the
appetizers offered at fins. Some of
these options include lighter choices,
like the vegetarian black bean soup or
pepper jack tortilla soup ($3.79).
Along with the lighter fare, Fins has
some great appetizers that can be
shared, especially if you’ve brought a
few beers to kick back and enjoy with
your friends.
One of the most popular appetizers
are the mini fins ($5.99), which are
crispy mini tortillas filled with
seasoned chicken and cheese, and
served with Fins’ famous salsa.
The quesadillas (starting at $6.99)
allow customers to add chicken,
steak, crab, veggies, or shrimp for just
a few dollars more.
The nachos ala fud ($7.99) are
another popular appetizer. Fud’s
famous nachos are baked with
smashed pinto beans, fresh jalapeno
peppers, sliced black olives, and their
special secret blend of sliced cheeses.
They are served with Fins’ famous
salsa, guacamole, and sour cream.
The salads served at Fins are both
healthy and filling.
The kahuna salad ($10.99), is
served with teriyaki grilled tuna over a
bed of mixed greens, seaweed slad,
mandarin sesame, and ginger slaw.
The bomba shack salad ($10.99) is
served with coconut-battered white
fish served over mixed greens,
seaweed salad, grilled pineapple, and
wasabi passion dressing.
Fins also has a simple salad for just
$5.99 that can serve as a side salad
with your choice of toppings like
chicken, steak, or fish.
Fins specializes in serving some of
the best burritos, tacos, and wraps at
the Jersey Shore.
The 3rd Ave burrito ($9.99) is
served with lump crab, smashed pinto
beans, Mexicali rice, pico de gallo, and
avocado, all smothered in shredded
cheese and enchilada sauce.
The natty dread burrito ($9.99) is
served with Jamaican jerk seasoned
chicken, rolled in a black bean flour
tortilla with sweet plantains, avocado,
pepper jack cheese, tropicali rice,
black beans, and an island coconut
drizzle. This is generally my go-to
order at Fins. The blend of tropical
flavors is incredible, and I always
enjoy biting into it. I can generally only
finish about three-quarters of the
burrito, which is fine because I have
no problem heating it up later as a
late-night snack.
The Mexicali blues burrito is
another of my frequently ordered
items. This one is little more
traditional than the natty dread. The
Mexicali blues is served with your
choice of chipotle grilled chicken,
steak, or veggies, and served with
Mexicali rice, black beans, pico de
gallo, and mixed cheese and
guacamole.
Be sure to “high tide” your burrito
for just $1.99 extra. This means that
they will smother your burrito in
shredded cheese and enchilada sauce.
It can get messy, but it is totally worth
it if you want to enjoy a more tasty
burrito. You can also ask for you
favorite burrito, wrap, or salad to be
served as a “soup bowl,” which
means they will serve it in a crispy
tortilla bowl.
The east west fish taco ($4.99) is
served with grilled Cod, drizzled
Hawaiian barbecue sauce, and topped
with wasabi, cucumber slaw, and
crispy tortilla chips, all on a soft flour
tortilla.
The Cabo taco ($3.99) is served
with tender battered white fish, serve
with shredded cheese, pico de gallo,
shredded Tropicali lettuce, and
roasted red pepper sauce.
The coconut sesame shrimp taco
($4.39) is always my choice when
ordering a taco. It is served with
shredded cheese, pico de gallo,
shredded tropicali lettuce, and wasabi
passion sauce.
You can always go for the taco
typical ($2.99), which gives you a
basic taco and your choice to add
meat, fish, or vegetables to it. The
taco typical comes standard with
shredded tropicali lettuce, shredded
cheese, and pico de gallo. You can
also add hot chipotle or mild chili
sauce.
The wraps served at Fins offer even
more variety than the burrito choices
on the menu.
I would say their chicken caesar
wrap, called the Hawaii 5-0 ($7.99),
has got to be one of the more popular
choices on the menu as a whole. I
have been to Fins many times, and I
would say, without fail, I have heard at
least one person, oftentimes more
than one person, order the Hawaii 5-0
while I was there.
The Malibu grinder ($8.99) is
grilled chicken wrapped in a spinach
tortilla with grilled pineapple, sliced
avocado, walnuts, pico de gallo, and
romaine lettuce, drizzled with roasted
red pepper sauce.
The Oahu wrap ($9.99) is served
with teriyaki seared tuna, avocado,
black beans, mango chunks, Mandarin
sesame slaw, and romaine lettuce in a
spinach wrap.
The somewhere in Jamaica wrap
($8.99) is another choice I have
ordered many times before; it is
served with spicy grilled Caribbean
shrimp, romaine lettuce, mango pico
de gallo, black beans, and mixed
cheese in a garlic herb wrap.
Since I can save some money
when I order at Fins due to their very
reasonable prices, I always spend a little bit more cash to get a smoothie.
All smoothies are 20 ounces, cost
$5.59, and are made with Yocream
non-fat yogurt.
My favorite smoothie is Lulu’s crazy
kick out, which is served with raspberries, strawberries, and tropical lulu
nectar. There are several other
smoothies that range in flavors —
from peanut butter to fruit, you can
get it all at Fins.
Since 2003, Fins Tropicali Cuisine
has been serving the Jersey Shore and
its residents some of the finest shore
food, and helped define a style of
cuisine that has become synonymous
with the Jersey Shore. The blend of
flavors from across the country make
for a unique mix, much like the diverse
blend of tourists and locals traveling
around and through the Jersey Shore.

Fueling up for long-distance running:
The importance of healthy foods
BY ANGELA CIROALO
NIGHT AND DAY
ON THE RUN
As a runner, or exercise enthusiast,
the foods that you eat should be
taken as seriously as the shoes you
wear and the time you finish in.
Unfortunately, proper diet is not
always top priority.
According to Erin Strout of Running
Times Magazine, runners continue to
follow the age-old beliefs that eating
large amounts of pasta the night
before, chugging bottles of sports
drinks and following fad diets will
improve performance.
However, what runners are
beginning to recognize is that quality
protein, fats, carbohydrates,
electrolytes and superfoods each play
an integral role in fueling a successful
athlete.
Stout writes that proper nutrition
and hydration are critical components
for improved running capabilities —
and successful runners are beginning
to take notice.
Upon first beginning my running
career I was not aware of the
importance of a healthy diet.
I followed all of the age-old beliefs
and suffered for it while competing in
my first half marathon.
It wasn’t long after that I
recognized the importance of
nutrition and proper fueling for
runners.
During a subsequent race, I cut my
half marathon time by 20 minutes,
finished strong, and recovered almost
immediately after.
A year or so later, however, I took
on my next challenge — running a
full marathon.
I began my training unaware of
how often and what types of foods I
would need to eat during a run.
With Angela
I can still remember coming home
from my first 15-mile run feeling
victorious but incredibly weak.
I went to bed that night with an
terrible headache and woke up the
next day feeling worse than ever.
It was at this point that I looked to
ultramarathon champion and author of
the book "Eat & Run: My Unlikely
Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness,"
Scott Jurek.
Jurek is known for his victories in
nearly every elite ultramarathon trail
and road event. He is most commonly
recognized for his seven straight
victories at the Western States 100
Mile Endurance Run, his recordbreaking Badwater 135-mile
Ultramarathon win, and his historic
153-mile Spartathalon win.
In Jurek’s book, he explains the
importance of eating carbohydrates
one to two hours prior to running,
eating carbohydrates during a run that
is longer than 90 minutes, and eating
protein within 30 minutes of
completing a run to properly recover.
Jurek follows a whole foods plantbased diet, and suggests that runners
eat a variety of organic whole foods
such as grains, legumes, green
vegetables and fruits.
In reaction to reading Jurek's book,
and seeking guidance from other
professional runners, I created this
training guide.
Day before: Avoid carbo-loading the
night before. Instead, fuel yourself on
quality protein, unsaturated fats and
carbohydrates. Your body will store the
protein, fats and carbohydrates and
utilize them the following day. Also
make sure to allow the body proper
time to digest all of the food you eat
prior to race morning.
A sample pre-race day, or pre-long
run, meal for me would include organic
brown rice, black beans, avocado,
tomato and tempeh. I also snack on
different fruits and nuts between
meals.
Morning before: Prior to embarking
on a long run, it is best to wake up at
least 30 minutes to one hour before
starting, in order to eat and digest.
Each runner's stomach will handle
foods and digestion differently,
therefore trial and error is key — the
same goes with foods eaten during the
run.
Carbohydrates are very important
the day of a run.
My pre-run meal often consists of a
piece of Ezekiel toast with peanut
butter and a banana or orange. If I
wake up early, I will eat a small bowl of
oatmeal with blueberries.
During a run: A runner only needs to
consume food if they are partaking in
exercise longer than 90 minutes.
If running for longer than 90
minutes it is best to eat every 30
minutes or so to fully restore the
body’s glycogen levels.
Most professional athletes suggest
eating at least 30 grams of
carbohydrates every 30 minutes.
Jurek created a conversion that
meets each runner’s specific needs
through relying on the runner’s weight.
The runner’s body weight divided by
2.2 multiplied by .7 equates to the
amount of carbohydrates consumed
while running, Jurek believes.
I weigh 130 pounds, therefore my
conversion would appear as 130/2.2 x
.7 = 41.4 grams.
Many runners reach for sports gels
to meet their carbohydrate needs
while exercising.
I opted for the natural whole foods
remedies.
A few examples of foods I consume
while running include bananas, figs,
organic fruit baby foods and dates.
While running, I eat one item every
30 to 40 minutes and drink water after
every mile.
Post-Run: After completing a run it
is time to refuel, recover and prepare
for the next run.
Eating can be tough after
undergoing a difficult workout,
therefore protein-packed smoothies
are a great solution.
I often consume one full cup of a
protein smoothie after each run.
My favorite post-run smoothie is a
blueberry, banana and flax seed
smoothie. I add one whole banana, rice
milk, frozen blueberries, hemp protein,
crushed flax seeds and cinnamon.
If you prefer a sweeter smoothie,
include one teaspoon of honey or
maple syrup.
INSPIRATION
A quote that gets me through long,
strenuous runs is Jurek's common
phrase: “Sometimes, you just do
things.”
The quote resonates with me to
the fact that I don't have a specific
explanation of why I run other than
the fact that I simply enjoy it.
We don’t need an explanation for
why we do things that make us happy,
it is just important that we go out
there and do them.
I challenge you to go out and do
something that you love for the simple
reason that “Sometimes, we just do
things.”

Beach Haus Brewery
opens in historic location
BY SEAN O’BRIEN
NIGHT AND DAY
The year was 2007, and two
longtime friends, Brian Ciriaco and John
Merklin, took a passion for
homebrewing to a whole new level.
They started brewing their own
beer, as inspired by the Jersey Shore, in
a garage in Brick. After teaming up with
a mutual friend, Tom Przyborwski, the
three dedicated their time to crafting
the perfect beer.
Their passion for crafting a nontraditional beer came at the right time.
Just as the art of microbrewing was
becoming more and more popular, the
Beach Haus Brewery soon became one
of the Jersey Shore’s hottest craft
brews, and ultimately helped define the
craft beer scene at the Shore.
They began brewing the Beach Haus
Classic American Pilsner, a style of beer
that resonates with the preferred style
of the Jersey Shore.
The Beach Haus homebrew was
distributed amongst family and friends,
and much praise was sung about the
remarkable beer. The legend of the
garage-brewed beer spread for years,
until 2010, when Brian, John and the
rest of the crew teamed up with a
distributing company to start selling
their beer in local liquor stores.
The success of the homebrew led to
the creation of other styles of beer,

Eight years
since its very
inception,
Beach Haus Brewery has become a
household name throughout the Jersey
Shore.
The brewery stumbled upon an
excellent opportunity in 2013.
Freedman’s Bakery, a long-standing
landmark located on Main Street in
Belmar, announced that it would be
closing up shop in 2014. MBI Capital, a
private real estate management
business, purchased the building with
Beach Haus as its primary tenant.
This came at the perfect time, as
Beach Haus Brewery had decided that
it would soon be time to further
legitimize their business by opening a
brewery of their own.
In the last year, Beach Haus Brewery

the Hopbahn Double IPA, which,
according to president and co-founder
of Beach Haus Brewery John Merklin, is
“well-built, showcasing strength and
complexity.”

and American hops, which gives off a
anticipation of fruity scent, but has a strong, hoppy

Dive! into some
delicious & fresh
food in Sea Bright
BY SEAN O’BRIEN
NIGHT AND DAY
Sea Bright was one of the many
Jersey Shore towns left in ruin after
Hurricane Sandy. Among the
devastated business was Dive! Coastal
Bar & Food Joint.
Through hard work, determination,
and the will to serve the community,
Dive! has gotten back up onto its feet
and reopened its doors to serve a
meal that is better than ever.
I recently went to Dive! to enjoy
lunch on a Friday afternoon.
When you walk through the front
doors of the restaurant, you enter into
a spacious and comfortable room with
several tables spread throughout the
restaurant and a bar to the right of the
entrance.
On this particular occasion, new
indie music was playing through a
sound system throughout the
restaurant, highlighting the
restaurant’s primary target audience:
young and hip. Despite the trendy
music, the crowd ranged in ages. Dive!
welcomes all through its doors and
treats all of its customers well.
I sat at the bar to enjoy a meal and
a beer. The large HD TVs behind the
bar sported videos featuring surfers in
Hawaii.
The draft system behind the bar
offers a great selection of craft and
local brews, but also sports the classic
domestics we all know and love.
The bartender, who was easily one
of the nicest and most easygoing guys
I’ve ever met, offered me some
popcorn as I waited and looked over
the menu.

Riverside dining & delicious
seafood at Harpoon Willy’s
BY SEAN O’BRIEN
NIGHT AND DAY
Dinner
There are countless waterfront
restaurants at the Jersey Shore, all of
which offer fantastic views of some of
the most scenic locations in the area,
but not all of them can provide as
tasty and bountiful a meal as can be
found at Harpoon Willy’s Tavern and
Waterfront Restaurant in Manasquan.
Located at 2655 River Road,
Harpoon Willy’s offers an unparalleled
view of the Manasquan River.
The restaurant’s exterior can easily
be mistaken as a typical Shore house,
as evidenced by the abundance of
windows that allow light to pour in
and great views to be had.
It is certainly best to time your visit
to Harpoon Willy’s with the sunset if
you can, as the natural spectacle
casts a postcard-worthy orange and
pink glow through the windows to
light the tavern.
If you find yourself, however,
venturing out on a cold or rainy night,
specifically in the winter, try your best
to get a spot near the fireplace; the
fire amplifies the restaurant’s cozy
atmosphere, especially if you are
trying to escape some chilly or
otherwise nasty weather.
It had been quite some time since
my last visit to Harpoon Willy’s, but
before I went, I could not for the life of
me remember what it was like until I
walked through the front door. I
approached the host stand and took a
look inside the bar as it all came back
to me.
I took my seat in the dining room
just as the sun was setting which, as I
previously stated, is the optimal time
to get the most gorgeous views of the
Manasquan River.
I glanced over the drink menu,
which had a good mix of traditional

You might be found doing overtime at The Office

NIGHT AND DAY
The Office Restaurant and Lounge in
Toms River pairs great food with an
atmosphere that is accommodating of
everyone.
When talking with a friend of mine
about some places we’d like to try, he
mentioned that he had passed The
Office a number of times recently and
noticed that the parking was rarely
empty. If you have ever seen the size
of the parking lot, this might come as a
shock to you.
How can a place be so busy so
often?
That is actually a really simple question to answer if you think about it. The
Office offers a quality meal and a
number of different specials for a very
reasonable price. Juicy steaks, big
burgers, fresh salads and seafood and
authentic Italian fare are just some of
the possibilities offered at The Office.
I had been to The Office Restaurant
and Lounge once or twice before, but I
enjoyed it so much I was willing to go
back with my buddy to check it out.
As we approached the restaurant,
my companion jokingly remarked that

Rosé is blowing up in the wine world
BY JOSEPH STEPHENS II

INSIDER
When you hear the word rosé,
what do you think of? White
Zinfandel? The color? Rap songs?
Nikki Minaj?
OK, so this month, I wanted to talk
about a trending topic in the wine
world: rosé wine. Rosé is blowing up.
It’s literally growing at triple digits in
this country and the funny thing is,
rosé has actually been produced for
over 8,000 years! Yeah, it’s pretty old.
In fact, the ancient Greeks and
Romans loved the stuff. They realized
that when they left the juice in
contact with the skins too long
(modern red wine) it was too harsh
and dry, but, with little skin contact,
rosé was born and it was not only
delicious, but easier to drink. So, rosé
has been a huge hit way longer than
we even knew.
What I really like about rosé is its
ability to pair with food. Rosé will pair
with salads, seafood, steak — you
name it. Its versatility is
unprecedented. In the past few years,
I’ve had a BBQ joint move in next to
my business. The first thing people
always ask me is, what goes with
BBQ? Easy, rosé. Rosé is awesome

in heaven. The thing is, rosé goes
really well with a lot of different foods.
Another great thing about rosé is that
it’s extremely affordable. What used to
be thought of as cheap “garbage,” the
quality of rosé these days can rival
some white burgundy — but the
price point is generally much lower.
Here’s a few of my favorite regions
for rosé, and why.
First and foremost is Provence,
France. Provence is producing some of
the best rosé in the world; the seaside
climate along with its rich history is
providing the world with the best pink
stuff out there. Using primarily
grenache and syrah, these rosés are
dry and true to their style. You really
can’t get a bad rosé from this region.
Mendoza. Malbec. I love those two
things already but if you take Malbec
and make rosé with it, wow. Rosé
from Malbec is incredible. Talk about a
great pairing for BBQ.
Spanish rosé is super hot right
now. Spain in general produces some
of the highest quality wines in the
world. Take those same producers and
let them produce a rosé, and you’ve
got some true gems.
Last but not least, the good old
USA. In Oregon, they’re making worldclass rosé. We already know their
Pinot Noir is outstanding, so imagine
just how well they can make rosé.
Here are a couple of my favorites:
CHATEAU BIELER
Charles Bieler is a part of the three
thieves with Charles Smith (a wine
revolutionary) and has been making
wine his entire life. This project is his
life, and it shows in the wine. I love
this rosé and rolling under 15 bucks, it
shows you just how much quality you
can get in Provence without breaking
the bank.

winemaker in Argentina, is the reason
I love rosé. Made from 100-percent
Malbec, this rosé is so cool. Loaded
with strawberry, acidity, cherry and
cranberry, this wine brings it all to the
table. Great for pool parties.
Regardless of what you think about
rosé or what you think you know, go
out and grab a bottle. No matter what
the price point, you won’t be
disappointed.
Cheers!

Jamian’s: A hip
joint with an
abundance of fun
BY SEAN O’BRIEN
NIGHT AND DAY
Drinks
Red Bank boasts a bunch of
different places perfect for a night out
scattered throughout the city. One
such example is Jamian’s Food and
Drink, situated at 79 Monmouth
Street.
I have a few friends that typically
go out in the Red Bank area, so I met
up with them recently for a night on
the town. Our first stop was Jamian’s.
We went pretty early, for us anyway,
on a Friday night. I hadn’t eaten dinner,
so I wanted to get a little something in
my stomach before we started our
night out.
Jamian’s is a pretty cool spot —
cozy inside, but with lots of room for
tables that, when cleared, make for an
awesome dance floor. Dancing is not
my forte, but if you’re looking for a
great spot to show off your best
moves, Jamian’s is certainly the place
for you.
We just beat the rush of people
when we went to Jamian’s by about
five minutes. We were able to secure a
couple seats up at the bar to watch
some NCAA Tournament March
Madness basketball.
We grabbed menus to order some
appetizers to enjoy during the game.
Jamian’s has a good selection of
appetizers, and they are all reasonably
priced.
The crab dip mac ‘n’ cheese ($10)
was a recommendation from the
bartender, so we ordered that
between the four of us. The delicious,
melty cheese and succulent crab meat
was so good, it was unfortunate that I
had to share it with my friends. It was

served with jalapeno toast that made
for an interesting blend of spices with
each and every bite.
We also ordered a plate of pulled
pork nachos ($8). This plate of blue
and yellow tortilla chips is served with
melted cheese and pico de gallo. The
shredded BBQ pulled pork layered on
top made for a tasty snack that could
have definitely served as a meal for
one, had it not been shared.
The appetizers were delicious, and
we considered ordering one more
dish, but it’s a good thing we didn’t
because we were soon stuffed after
just the two. They offer plenty of other
tempting options though, like bacon
wrapped chicken skewers ($10),
cheesesteak empanadas ($10) and, of
course, wings ($10).
As great as the food is, the drink
selection is the shining star at
Jamian’s. Jamian’s offers an interesting
selection of draft beers. They really
only have a few traditional draft beers;
they are Coors Light ($4), Yuengling
($4) and Guinness ($5).
The craft beer selection really
shines, and for four craft beer
enthusiasts, it
was a great
opportunity to
try some
different
choices.
I ordered a
Dale’s Pale Ale,
one of my
favorite IPAs,
and not
necessarily
something you
see very often,
especially on tap. My friends ordered
some different beers, including a
Boulder Hazed and Infused, which is a
dry-hopped ale. Another friend
ordered a Smuttynose Old Brown Dog,
which has been labeled as traditional
American Brown Ale comparable to
other brown ales like Newcastle.
I’ve always been a beer drinker, and
generally find myself shying away
from cocktails and other liquor-based
drinks, but Jamian’s cocktail menu had
me second guessing my previous
decisions not to imbibe.
One of these cocktails was the
Black and Blue Lemonade, which is
made with Stolichnaya Blakberri and
Blueberi mixed with lemonade.
The Me Falldown is a martini made
with Gin Hendrix, Lime Juice, Fonseca
Bin 27 and pear juice. I suspect, based
on this martini’s name, that you
should mind yourself when drinking
too many of them for fear that you
might actually fall down.
Jamian’s Food &
Drink hosts a great

One of the great
things about
Jamian’s Open Mic is
that they provide
guitar and bass
amplifiers, a standard drum set and a
PA system. This provides musicians
with a great opportunity to come out
and play, without the hassle of lugging
all of your equipment to and from the
bar, and also cuts down on the time it
takes to set up and break down
equipment.
Jamian’s Food & Drink is a unique
spot in the heart of bustling Red Bank
that offers, as the name implies, a
great selection of cold beers, cocktails
and some delicious appetizers that are
great to share with friends at the bar.
Jamian’s can host a large crowd in
a seemingly tight space, and thrives
on the idea that there is no cover
charge, and no long lines, which is
especially enticing in a place like Red
Bank, where lines and expensive cover
charges are, unfortunately, in excess.
They also host some form of live
entertainment almost every night,
making Jamian’s your destination for
fun in a hip atmosphere.

Always a good time for
young and old at Used To Be’s
BY SEAN O’BRIEN
NIGHT AND DAY
Drinks
I recently took the trip along the
beach to Mantoloking to check out a
place called Used to Be’s.
I did not really know what to
expect when I pulled up out front. You
might not know what is in store for
you at first, but you get a totally
different vibe when you enter the bar.
The bar area presents a cool surfer
vibe that fits right in at the Jersey
Shore. The decorations exude the
atmosphere and attitudes of the real
Jersey Shore, but they do not overdo
it. The “surf rock” vibe made me feel
like The Beach Boys might set up and
jam at any minute.
Speaking of The Beach Boys, the
oldies music that played over the
sound system was definitely fitting of
the tasteful style of the restaurant and
bar. The old music, however, was not
entirely representative of the crowd.
There was a good mix of late twenties
to middle aged patrons coming and
going.
Despite the mixed crowd, one thing
was clear — everyone was having an
absolutely great time. Everyone was
SPOT

just enjoying the company, and the
friendly bartenders, who recognized
that I had never been there almost
immediately, made me feel right at
home.
Used To Be’s regularly draws a
pretty good crowd, and boasts a
dedicated customer base. I overheard
one customer say she had been going
there regularly for at least 10 years.
The building that houses Used To
Be’s has been around since the late
1950s and prides itself on being an
aged member of the bar community,
but the age of the building only made
it seem more welcoming and bursting
with character.
I was there fairly early on a Friday
and stayed late into the night. I saw a
pretty significant change as the crowd
went from a mix of people older than
myself, to those more within my
younger age group.
The drink selection relies more
heavily on classics like Bud, Bud Light,
Coors Light and the like than craft
beer options, but they did offer some
craft brews, as well.
That is kind of what I appreciated
about the place so much: it wasn’t trying to be something it isn’t. It didn’t
try too hard to appeal to the younger
crowds, but instead let its reputation
as a fun place to have some drinks
with your friends do the talking.
Honestly, it brought me back a
couple years, back to the college days
of being packed in a bar with tons of
people my age, many of whom were
throwing back shots and having a
great time.
Before things got out of hand, I
ordered a bar pie. Surprisingly, the
pizza was crafted with a certain level
of artistry that you rarely find,
especially when you order a bar pie.
I took a look at the menu, and
noticed that many of their dishes
seemed to be tastefully prepared. The
artistry was evident in the dishes I
saw being delivered to customers as I
took a quick lap of the place to get a
feel for it.
When you go to some bars,
especially those that seemingly have
established a local and regular crowd,
you can sometimes feel like an
outsider as you might get looks from
the customers as if to suggest that
you do not belong. Used To Be’s has a
local and regular crowd, but the
hospitable nature of the staff and
customers is certainly apparent in
both their loyal customer base and the
welcoming anyone who walks through
the door.
The time to check out Used To Be’s
is drawing nearer as the weather
warms. They offer a sort of haven
from the out-of-state traffic in Seaside
for us local Jersey Shore residents —
but, as I said before, they definitely
welcome anyone who walks through
the door.
Used To Be’s can be found at 287
Route 35, Mantoloking.

10th Ave. Burrito
gets spiced up
BY KAITLYN KANZLER
NIGHT AND DAY
Bartender
If you are looking for a variety of
tequila, some spicy or refreshing
drinks and a sympathetic ear, look no
further than 10th Ave. Burrito’s new
bar manager, Dudley Delhagen.
Delhagen, who grew up in the
Ocean Grove area, has been serving
drinks at the Jersey Shore and beyond
for over the past two decades.
Delhagen got his start at The
Stadium, now Fratello’s, in Sea Girt at
a young age. According to him, he was
“kind of forced” into bartending.
He started off as a bus boy, moving
up to a server before being placed
behind the bar.
“I had a great time,” Delhagen said.
Delhagen said, when he started
bartending in the late-1980s, the
classic drinks — old-fashioneds,
Manhattans, Long Island Iced Teas,
and Presbyterians — were staples.
According to Delhagen, it was a
benefit and “really cool” learning the
basics from the get-go.
“It was more than working at a
beer and shot place,” he said. “You
learn the basics from the bottom up,
which is nice.”
He said many people who bartend
start at establishments that primarily
focus on beer and shots and they do
not learn how to correctly make
cocktails.
“It’s hard for them to adapt to this
kind of concept,” Delhagen said.
Delhagen has been a staple at
Jersey Shore bars for many years,
working at Kelly’s in Avon-by-the-Sea,
Headliner in Neptune City and
Langosta Lounge and Watermark in
Asbury Park. He also worked at a
burlesque club in Revel down in
Atlantic City and as a bartender in

a bunch of those on a hot day.”
Another great cocktail has a bit of a
spicy twist — jalapeño-infused
tequila, which they do on premises.
The spicy pineapple margarita is a
take on a drink the bar already had,
according to Delhagen, who said he
just “refined it a bit.”
The margarita uses Hornitos
jalapeño-infused tequila, muddled,
grilled pineapple, fresh lime, and agave.
“Up front you taste the pineapple
and in the backend, you get the heat.
It’s a really cool drink,” Delhagen said.
Delhagen’s personal favorite is the
Mexi-Cali mule, which is a take on the
Moscow mule.
The Mexi-Cali mule also uses
jalapeños, but without the seeds,
giving people the taste of the pepper
rather than the spice of it.
To concoct this drink, Delhagen
uses Mezcal Joven tequila, honey
syrup, muddled jalapeño and topped
off with ginger beer.
