Presidents Patter
Welcome to the Best Rotary Club in Australia!
I have three grateful Thank You’s.
1. Sue Thank you for a very well organised Challenge
meeting. Clearly time, thought and effort had been put into
the meeting. As a result the meeting went very well and
the Challenge is looking great. We need a fine day. With
your organising ability can you arrange that please Sue?
2. Our Challenge Committee Members Thank you for
attending our meeting and your valuable contributions. It
was pleasing to hear “We can do that” coming from
Committee members.
3. Deanna What a great talk she gave us and she has been
a great exchange student. All of us who have entertained/
hosted her have been impressed with Deanna’s good
manners and willingness to try something new.
Deanna giving her farewell speech to the Club
Can I also remind Board members we need to think about
our Annual Report. I will send a separate reminder to those
involved.
Have a great week!

After the Challenge planning session, Bob Behan reminded members that the end of the financial year
is fast approaching. We should all consider our ability to donate to the Rotary Foundation. He also reminded us that in 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio
eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rat that time, 500000 cases of polio were diagnosed annually. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have
played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort. Last
year, only 59 cases were reported.
Col reminded members of the theatre night on Friday 12 June at St Lukes. The show is Murder on the
Nile. Dinner will be at the Holland Park Hotel—speak to Col if you want more details.
Finally, the lovely Deanna gave her presentation. She told us of her hometown of Datteln in the North
Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. Showing photos of her family, friends and school, we learned a
little about her home and her volunteer work with the Red Cross. Deanna then spoke of her wonderful
exchange in Australia. She has made many friends with other exchange students and at school and has
loved her three host families—the Anthony’s, the Brady’s and the Rainford’s, plus has had great support from Peter and Gayle, her Club counsellors. When she reflects on the 12 months, she feels she has
grown from the inside. Some of the highlights of her exchange have been visiting Byron Bay (her favourite place in Australia), discovering a love of musicals, going to the School formal, attending her
first AFL game and having a wonderful Rock to Reef safari. Deanna noted that when she returns home,
she still has three years of school to complete, as students attend up to year 13. She hopes to become
a midwife when she finishes school. She found Mt Gravatt High School very different from her school at
home, not least because she had to wear a uniform! She very much enjoyed studying drama, which is
not a subject available in Germany. She hopes to run for school captain at home and is considering
suggesting that the school adopt a uniform!
Deanna thanked all members for making her time in Brisbane so special. Gayle then thanked Deanna
for being an excellent exchange student and noted that we will always carry her in our hearts.
At the end of the meeting, President Jim thanked members who have helped with the Red Shield Appeal this week and noted that there will be a regular meeting at the Sports Club on 16 June.
