If you want to spend the next four years studying in
a community of visionaries, innovators and
overachievers – then UC San Diego is a great choice!
In just half a century, UCSD has established itself as
one of the premiere research universities in the
world. If you want to spend the next four years
studying with world-class faculty who work at the
cutting edge in their fields, then UCSD is the
university for you. Nobel prize winners, MacArthur
“Genius” Award winners, and more than 80
members of the National Academy of Sciences,
UCSD professors are the scholars who are writing
the books that people will be reading tomorrow and
the scientists and engineers who are developing the
next-generation technologies that will shape the
future for all of us. Widely acknowledged for its local
impact, national influence, and global reach, UCSD
is regularly ranked by U.S. News & World Report
among the top ten public research universities and
was recently named by Washington Monthly as
number one in the nation in rankings measuring
“What colleges are doing for the country.”
Moreover, if you like the idea of working with a
faculty member one-on-one, UCSD could be the
place for you. The Faculty Mentorship Program, the
Ronald E. McNair Program, the Post-Baccalaureate
Achievement Program, and departmental Honors
Programs are just a few of the opportunities open to
talented undergraduates who want to get a head
start on their eventual careers by assisting on faculty
research projects and even pursuing projects of their
own. Libraries, labs, and study facilities are all
first-rate.
At the same time that UCSD offers students the
opportunities of a great research university, its
unique college system provides the supportive and
friendly environment of a small liberal arts college.
The college system was the visionary idea of UCSD’s
founders who conceived of each college as a home
base where students can live, work, and play with a
bright, articulate, and involved group of peers and a
friendly, easily accessible college staff. Each college
has a diverse group of students representing the full
range of majors in the university. Each college also
has its own distinct character, general education
requirements, residential neighborhood, and
extracurricular student life.
Is Muir the Best College for Me?
Muir is the first choice of more incoming UCSD
students than any of the other colleges. Why?
What’s so great about Muir? First, Muir offers
students more choice in determining their courses
of study than other colleges. If you want flexibility
to design an academic program that corresponds to
your individual interests and goals, Muir is the
place. Many Muir students take advantage of this
flexibility to pursue a double major or a minor. For
qualified students, the Muir Special Project (MSP)
Major offers the opportunity to design an
individualized interdisciplinary major. (Space
