#emergeinyarra
Welcome
Emerge in Yarra presents a new week-long program
for its 12th anniversary with a multitude of free
arts workshops, language and cooking classes in
addition to live music and theatre performances that
showcase the diverse talent that exist in the City of
Yarra.
Founded in 2004 as a platform for the emerging
and refugee artists in Multicultural Arts Victoria’s
Visible Music Mentoring Program, the festival
has since grown to encompass talented emerging
and refugee artists from across the city whilst also
paying respect to Indigenous Australians as the first
people of this land and recognising their continuing
spiritual, physical and cultural connection to the
land. The festival is timed to coincide with the United
Nations World Refugee Day and Refugee Week and
celebrates the ever-expanding contributions artists
from all sectors of our diverse society have made in
building Melbourne’s unique cultural landscape and
the Creative industry in Victoria.
Emerge in Yarra has also been the stimulus and
springboard for contemporary cultural activity in
outer metro and regional Victoria embracing and
unearthing the talents of emerging and refugee
artists.

Cubbies (Fitzroy Adventure Playground) was founded in 1974
in response to the needs of parents moved by the government
from “slum housing” in inner-city Melbourne, into high rise
towers. Cubbies is a safe backyard where kids from diverse
backgrounds can play, explore, create and make friends.
In the lead up to Emerge Festival, theatre makers Claudia
Escobar and Brienna Macnish will gather moments of play
and transform them into performance. The moments will be
captured through film and sound, with a final site-specific
installation set amongst and within the slippery slides
and cubby houses. Full of adventure and imagination, the
performance will take you down the rabbit-hole into a make
believe world you’ve never seen before.
DESTA Entertainment presents a night of Eritrean and
Ethiopian culture with performances from Snit Band, local
DJs spinning contemporary Habesha tunes, folk dancers and
projections created by visual artist Guled Abdulwasi. Grab a
cocktail in the tiki-bar inspired Luwow and get grooving to
the many unmistakable rhythms of this musically fertile part
of the world.
