May Issue - Murrieta United Methodist Church

Monthly Newsletter of Murrieta United Methodist Church
THE VINE
Volume 129 Issue 5
This past Lent I decided that I was going to
give up excuses. Part of that discipline was
to stop making excuses for being out of
shape. Since moving to Murrieta, I had
gotten used to (and frankly, good at)
making excuses for why I didn’t have the
time or energy to exercise. Too busy. Too
hot. Too stressed. Too tired. Too _______. I
was done with excuses and Lent was a good
time to challenge myself to a no excuses
discipline. I found a women’s gym right around the corner
from the church and started going to “boot camp” at 5am
three times a week. I’ve really enjoyed it. In fact, after
the first 5 weeks, I signed up for 6 months more.
On my birthday, I couldn’t get myself out of bed at
4:35am, so I went to the 8am class. At the end of class
while we were stretching a woman started a conversation
with me.
“Do you usually go the 5am class?” she asked.
“Yes. That works best with my work schedule,” I replied.
“What do you do?”
“I’m a pastor,” I said.
“What church?” she asked.
“The Methodist Church in Murrieta.”
“I know that church, that’s the church that feeds people,”
she proclaimed.
I smiled and responded, “Yes. We do—in more than one
way.”
May 2015
I’m still on cloud 9 from that
conversation. There are two things I
want to say about it. First, what a
wonderful way to be known in the
community—feeding people in body,
and spirit. Now here’s my question for
you—when’s the last time you talked
to someone about the great ministries
of our church? People in the
community know about the church
when we share the good news of the
gospel being lived out at MUMC.
Please, tell someone about your
church. Invite someone to church.
Better yet, bring someone to church.
It’s our call/job to let others know
what God is doing through and with us
at MUMC.
Second, this month is the golf
tournament that raises money to help
fund the Food Pantry ministry at the
church. I hope you will join me for
dinner, or play golf (no, I don’t golf),
or if you can’t be there, make a
donation. The Food Pantry is doing
amazing ministry fulfilling the vision
of the church. Each week the Food
Pantry Loves God, Loves Others and
Serves People. Join us for a great 2
days that go to support the ministry of
the Food Pantry.
See you in church.

MISSIONS NEWS
Look for your MUMC Missions Team at Coffee Fellowship and
the Friendship Center on Sunday mornings. You can find us
by the “Ask Me about Missions” badges!
Our current projects include:
RECYCLING - Our first month of recycling on church campus
shows great progress, thank you for all your efforts by
placing recyclables in those BLUE cans located all over our
campus. Signs are posted by the bins to help clarify what is
and is not recyclable. If you have any questions please
contact Candace Saxman at 951- 696-2664!
Mission to Colonia Santo Nino, Mexicali - Tom Pilkington
leads a mission that reaches out to the poor in Mexicali.
There
is a Mission Moment during Worship on Sunday, May
3rd where Tom will talk about the work done there, our
vision for the future and how you can become involved,
both in Mexicali and here at home, by donating needed
supplies, time and talents.
Friday Morning Breakfasts - Mark Sorenson leads the team
of volunteers that makes and serves breakfast to our food
pantry patrons on the last Friday of each month. Mark or
any other Missions Team member would be happy to share
how you can get involved.
Joshua Tree VBS - Help Wanted - Joshua Tree UMC has not
been able to provide Vacation Bible School for their
community in more than 10 years. This year MUMC is
providing it for them. We need volunteers to help for 1 day
(or the whole week from Monday, June 22 nd - Friday, June
26th). If you’re interested in learning more and finding out
how you can help please attend an information meeting on
Sunday May 3rd in between services at 10:15am in Fellowship
Hall, room 4. If you are unable to attend the meeting you
may call April Watkins 951-805-8843 for more information.
Great Day of Service is schedule for October 10th this year.
Our church will lead other Methodist churches in our Mission
area, as well as a big team of community volunteers, in
refurbishing the Wildomar Elementary School. Many of the
projects being completed that day were chosen by the
students at the school. Come join the fun! Contact Tom
Pilkington or Candace Saxman to volunteer!

CARING MINISTRY
The MUMC Caring Ministry’s mission is to
share the love of Jesus with the
church body by rendering physical,
spiritual and emotional care to those
in need during times emergency.
We continue to support the mission of
the Murrieta United Methodist Church by
Serving People. This month we want to
thank the many in the congregation who
provide so generously to our card
ministry. We are inspired by Ephesians
5:20 …giving thanks to God the Father
for everything, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
You may wonder how we support our
card ministry. In March we sent over 150
cards of various types. Many of the
cards donated are originals, handmade
by our creative divas, some are recycled
from the used cards and others are
brand new! We thank all contributors
and encourage you to keep those cards
coming as we receive positive feedback
about how these cards lift the spirits of
our congregation.
We also recognize the anonymous donor
who faithfully and regularly provides
ALL of the postage stamps used in this
ministry. This level of generosity is
remarkable and whoever you are, we
give thanks for you.
Of course, we don’t forget to give
thanks for our small but mighty team
who selflessly show their care and
concern for others in answering the calls
to prepare and deliver meals, visit and
call the homebound and visit the ill in
hospitals. Please continue to send
requests or needs through the church
office or by contacting the co-leads
Richard Steadman or Eula Anyiwo at
caring@murrietaumc.org. For urgent
needs please call Rich at 951-471-2337
or Eula at 909-731-6706.
Our next meeting will be held on
Wednesday, May 6 at 1:30 in
Fellowship Hall.

ANOTHER YOUTH OPPORTUNITY
Another opportunity for the congregation to help with SSP is
through our SSP Shares Donations. Beginning in May, the
youth will sell “shares” which will help sponsor him/her while
on their mission trip. You will receive letters from the youth
from SSP and be invited to a hosted dinner upon their return
in July.
MOM’S SURVIVAL GROUP
April was a busy month for the youth
program and we have a lot more happening
in the month of May!
On May 3rd the Parent Social will be held in
the Youth room between services from
10:00-11:00 a.m., giving me the perfect
opportunity to put faces to names and get
to know the parents of our youth. Please
stop by the Youth Room to say “hello”.
There is no Youth Group on Mother’s Day
(May 10th) and a Counselor Meeting on May
16th.
The Youth are sponsoring the
Goodwill Drive on May 17th,
so if you have any items to
donate we really would
appreciate your support. You
can drop them off at the
church any time before 4:00 p.m. on the
17th. The proceeds go towards youth
activities, including helping those attending
Sierra Service Project this summer.
Lastly, this month the youth begin a
curriculum on the Gospel and missions.
They are studying their call towards Jesus
and missions and will do a “who are we”
theme in youth group enabling the new
counselors and the youth to get to know
each other better and continue bonding as
a church family.

NOTES FROM THE PANTRY
Each family coming to the food pantry receives a basic bag of
staples which includes cans of vegetables, beans, pasta, meat,
tuna, and toilet paper that our pantry shoppers purchase through
the week. They also can pick from the variety of cereals and
soups we have available. Then they choose from bakery items,
which have been donated by Winco, and bakery goods, produce,
meat and deli that Albertsons has donated through their Fresh
Rescue Program. Each week, through your generosity and the
generosity of our community, the people we serve can count on
receiving this much food. Proceeds from the MUMC Annual Golf
Tournament and donations from the congregation cover the cost
of the weekly shopping trips. We try hard to stock up on sale
items and rely on Winco and The 99 Cents Store when there are
none. We would love it if everyone could bring just a couple of
cans of beans (beans never seem to go on sale) during May to
allow us to lay up some reserves. Another good choice is ramen
noodles as the people really like them. Bless you all for your
continued support.
