He is also the first designer in years to have a real breakthrough in couture Tuesday, April 3, 2012 Giambattista Valli Designer for the well-heeled woman ERIC WILSON NYT SYNDICATE N the season between his last show for the house of Emanuel Ungaro in the fall of 2004, and the start of his own business in the spring of 2005, Giambattista Valli adopted a curious look that has since become one of his many signatures. On almost any occasion at which Valli, 45, appears, he wears a pearl necklace, usually contrasted against his thin frame, a fitted black sweatshirt and loose black jeans. It is hard to say whether the look is more Coco Chanel or Barbara Bush. Valli has worn the strand of natural pearls, which he said he purchased from a maharajah in India, ever since Luigi Scialanga, who does the jewellery for his shows, told him that “this is you, this is going to be your signature thing.” Valli is all about a signature. “The hardest thing in fashion is not to be known for a logo, but to be known for a silhouette,” Valli said recently in his headquarters, a fabulous building in Paris close to the Madeleine that happened to once Emma Stone in a Valli at the 2012 Oscars. have been the residence of another famous Italian of a similar given name, JeanBaptiste Lully, a composer at the court of In the seven years since he started his signaLouis XIV. I Giambattista Valli Startalk Lifeline celebrity clientele. According to retailers, his ready-to-wear, couture and collaborations generate an estimated $80 million in sales annually. Meanwhile Ungaro, which dropped Valli in favour of a series of flashier designers, has since foundered to the point of potential extinction. In December, as a further testament to Valli’s standing in French fashion, after showing a single couture collection, he was granted the official status of haute couturier by the Chambre Syndicale, which governs French fashion. That organisation normally requires that a designer wait five years to apply for the distinction. And in September, Rizzoli plans to publish a book on his work, a milestone usually reserved for designers much further into their careers. It says a lot about Valli’s place in fashion that his role model is not the avant-garde designers of Paris, nor those multinational talents who have revived houses like Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton, but a designer like Oscar de la Renta, who adapted his fashion to generations of socially prominent customers. Valli was raised in a conservative family in Rome, where he observed the stylish women who made fashion their own, which he said he never forgot once he moved to Paris in the 1990s to work for Ungaro. Ungaro credited Valli with revitalising the house, and named him as his successor when he retired. But the Ferragamo family, which owned Ungaro, dismissed him during an internal struggle in 2004. Valli started his own line three months later, working out of an atelier in the Marais. Valli said he has never had a financial backer and has no lucrative licensed products, though there are rumours of a fragrance deal (and Manuel Puig, the vice chairman of the powerful Puig fragrance company, happened to be sitting in the front row of his last show). But Valli said he relies on his Valli girls to survive, and he is generally adored by customers and models alike. In his showroom, Kinga Rajzak, who was trying on a black tulle dress with a fitted sweater knit top, a key look from the fall collection, said: “I was just thinking this collection was different. It’s more urban.” Valli replied: “That’s exactly what it is. I wanted something more urban, the idea of walking through Central Park with big sweaters, an uptown look on NoLIta girls.” Ultimately, the show was one of the best received of his career. Nicole Fischelis, the fashion director of Macy’s, said that she asked Valli to participate in its collaboration series because of the excitement around this label. And that image rubbed off on the customers at Macy’s. “We had his product in cities where customers don’t even know his name, and obviously they got it,” Fischelis said. In hindsight, Valli said, he had good timing. When he decided to start his own label, many of fashion’s greatest talents were retiring, like Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino. There were plenty of opportunities to take over an existing house, but he said he thought it was the right moment to take a risk. And now it is possible to recognise Valli’s handwork, not by the name on the label, but by the look of the dress. So, I’m not walking around with a big puke stain or poo stain on my shirt,” showbizspy.com quoted the American actress as saying. “Knowing that I don’t have time to go home and change, and really, I don’t have the time, to pick out five different changes of outfits for my car, it’s enough to remember my baby’s change of clothes,” she added. ACTRESS Kate Winslet says she is not a fan of the popular My Heart Will Go On song from the movie Titanic. The song, sung by Celine Dion, was a huge hit, but the actress admits she has to hide her real feelings every time she hears it. “I feel like throwing up when I hear it. No, I shouldn’t say that. No, actually, I do feel like throwing up,” showbizspy.com quoted the 36-year-old as saying. “I wish I could say, ‘Oh listen, everybody! It’s the Celine Dion song!’ But I don’t. I just have to sit there, you know, kind of straight-faced with a massive internal eye roll,” she added. 34 Tuesday, April 3, 2012 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Reesha Feather Qadam Feet Malaf File Zits Zahrah Flower Etar Frame Maarad Gallery Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: admin@qatar-tribune.com S TA R TA L K ARIES [march 21 - apr19] The only Full Moon that is opposite your sign all year is taking place today. In the face of this, many salons stopped offering the treatment. Their curlytressed clients were forced to examine other options. Even the most self-accepting of curly-haired women continue to nurture one dream: a product that can be shampooed in or applied after showering that will magically straighten (or even just make waves with) the hair temporarily – without formaldehyde, round brushes or heat tools like flat irons and blow dryers. Hair-care companies (Garnier, Ojon, Suave, Organix, Living Proof, and Bumble and bumble, to name a few) have been quick to market at-home versions of hair-straightening products to replace the Brazilian Blowout. “The temptation is to think that it’s the same result as the salon,” said Eva Chen, the beauty and health director at Teen Vogue, who linked the process to doing a facial at home by yourself instead of booking an aesthetician. “What you get is that your hair will be more manageable. Will it be Gwyneth Paltrow circa 1996? No, I don’t think you can expect that.” Garnier Sleek and Shine blow-dry perfector promises “finally hair smooth and frizz-free for seven washes,” saying it will “change your life.” As a curly-haired woman, I was intrigued. I was also a home-beauty neophyte, never having permed, coloured or cut my own hair. But the promise of straight hair seemed worth any consequences. I told myself I could wear it in a bun for a month if it looked terrible, and proceeded to buy both the Perfector and Organix Brazilian keratin therapy 30-day smoothing treatment. Both products are available at most drugstores for around $15 and are nonrelaxer straightening treatments that claim to reduce curl and frizz for about a month. One can at least be assured that there is no formaldehyde in them, since the ingredients are printed on the box, though I thought that I needed a chemist to tell me what PEG-14 dimethicone was. I decided to try both products simultaneously, sectioning my hair, in stylist parlance, L Hair-care companies (Garnier, Ojon, Suave, to name a few) have been quick to market at-home versions of hair-straightening products to replace the Brazilian Blowout and using the Garnier on one half and the Organix on the other. The Organix came with a pre-treatment shampoo, so I used that in the shower, combed my hair and wiggled into clear plastic gloves. The Garnier serum was clear and smelled noxious, like perm solution, while Organix’s was creamy and pleasantly reminiscent of coconut oil. I left both on for a half-hour. My dog took one sniff of me and backed away to his bed. I rinsed them out thoroughly, put Garnier’s PerfectIt after-cream on the appropriate section and, following the instructions, went to work blow-drying my hair to the best of my meagre abilities. Then I used a salonquality T3 flat iron. My hair seemed vaguely easier to straighten, but the whole process still took about three hours. Results appeared to be the same on both sides, with stick-straight hair lacking a bit in body. “I’ve yet to find a keratin treatment that’s anything like a salon treatment,” said Sally Hershberger, the salon owner and stylist, whose own line includes a Hyper Hydration super keratin spray. “It will cut blow-drying in half and make the texture softer. It transforms the hair to a softer, smoother texture. The flip side is that your hair is a little thinner-looking.” The day after my ministrations, my hairdo featured no frizz and held up better than any blowout in recent memory. It took a walk in the rain the next day to see if any kinks returned. After 48 hours, I was allowed to wash it (per both products’ instructions) and let it air-dry curly. The result was smoother, less frizzy hair. It was a change that was almost imperceptible (no one commented on it), but my hair felt more manageable and, dare I say, ever so slightly straighter. A miracle shampoo-in straight hair elixir, these products are not, but for those looking to manage their curls (and their expectations), look no further. And judging from recent runways, slightly rumpled is the style I should be going for anyway. “I personally think it’s a big moment for curls right now,” said Chen, who pointed to the “undone” red-carpet hair of Alexa Chung and Scarlett Johansson, or the “flyaway” look at Chloe, Anna Sui and Rag & Bone. “It’s much more chic to look effortlessly gorgeous. It’s no longer about the perfectly lacquered Upper East Side look.” Tuesday, April 3, 2012 HOLLYWOOD Scene unscene www.qatar-tribune.com Rihanna describes her bond with Katy Salma opens up about acne trouble SINGER Rihanna has revealed that her bond with Katy Perry is based on a proper friendship, it’s more than the fake showbiz friendship. “She’s unbelievable! She is such a strong being. She wants to be there for me and I’m like, ‘Girl, I’m supposed to be there for you, don’t worry about me right now!’ She’s incredible like that. She’s one of my best friends in the industry,” themirror.co.uk quoted Rihanna as saying. “When I came into this industry, I just identified with Katy and not a lot of women I meet I can click with and right away. And I just knew I loved her honesty, it was pure and it was fresh. And I enjoyed her company,” she added. SALMA Hayek, one of the most beautiful actresses in the movie business, says she suffered “severe, severe depression” from acne and being overweight when she was a struggling actress. The Latino star insists it was a far different story when she was 25 and trying to break into movies. “You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad it sent me into severe, severe depression,” thesun.co.uk quoted her as saying. “The next stage with that sort of depression is food - too little or too much. Guess what I did? I was fat and broken out,” she told Lucky magazine. She credits director Alfonso Cuaron for teaching her “to meditate, to relax”. As for more drastic beauty treatments, she insists: “Botox - trust me, I’ve been tempted!” RIHANNA 39 SALMA HAYEK Bieber, Swift big winners at slimy Kids’ Choice Awards Bieber was also voted by fans as the celebrity they most wanted to see get slimed, and the green goo flowed from the rafters and water cannons aimed at the stage. REUTERS HE green slime flowed so much that even first lady Michelle Obama could not escape it at the Kids’ Choice Awards where singers Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift came away big winners. The programme is an annual stop for Hollywood stars who are popular among teenage and young viewers watching the Nickelodeon cable TV network, and this 25th anniversary was no exception. But as always, the green slime was the biggest star at the show where Bieber won favourite male singer in fan voting. On stage, Bieber took the orange blimp trophy from Smith, then the show’s host had a surprise for the 18-year-old pop star. Bieber was also voted by fans as the celebrity they most wanted to see get slimed, and the green goo flowed from the rafters and water cannons aimed at the stage. There was so much goo splashing around in the finale that it splattered on the face of a surprised first lady. Obama was at hand at the popular show to give the “big help” blimp trophy to country star Swift. The honour, bestowed on Obama two years earlier for her work with kids fitness and health, goes to a celebrity who has devoted time and energy to charitable causes. Swift was singled out for her work to stop bullying and for providing aid to tornado victims in the southern United States. Swift “rocketed to the top of the music industry, but still keeps her feet on the ground,” Obama said about the 22-yearold country singer, calling her “someone who is going to keep making sparks fly for all of us in the years ahead.” Other winners included made-for-TV band Big Time Rush, named favourite music group. Selena Gomez, 19, was named favourite female singer for her work with pop band The Scene, as well as favourite TV actress in the Wizards of Waverly Place, which ended its run on the Disney Channel earlier this year. Twilight stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner both grabbed orange blimps. Stewart, 21, was named favourite movie actress. Lautner, 20, earned the title best “butt kicker” for his role as werewolf Jacob Black in the vampire romance flicks. Favourite movie actor was Adam Sandler, 45, known for goofy comedies such as his recent Jack and Jill. Nickelodeon’s Victorious was named top TV show. Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift (left). Shilpa takes Lamaze classes AFTER making girls go weak in their knees with his towel dancing in Saawariya, as a flirt in Bachna Ae Haseeno and stunning everyone with his performance as a serious politician in Raajneeti, the 29-year-old has donned the garb of an old man. A new set of pictures show him with loose skin, moustache, grey hair and specs sitting at a counter with a transistor on one side. It has not been revealed whether the look is for a film or for an advertisement, but the actor is once again geared to make news and leave his fans astonished. Till the actor decides to reveal the mystery behind this new look, one can only keep guessing. ACTRESS Shilpa Shetty, who is expecting her first child with husband Raj Kundra in May, has started taking Lamaze classes and finds the exercise insightful and fun. Lamaze is a technique that increases a mother’s confidence in her ability to give birth and helps them understand how to cope with pain in ways that both facilitate labour and promote comfort. “Started Lamaze classes with Dr Rita Shah. A must do, very insightful. Fun to work out with pregnant women all around. Quite a cute sight,” the 36-year-old posted on micro-blogging site Twitter. The actress, who married London-based Kundra in 2009, announced her pregnancy in December last year. RANBIR KAPOOR SHILPA SHETTY Rani Mukerji to star in nautch girl–to–queen biopic Tusshar Kapoor Now Tusshar’s turn to flaunt six-pack Tigmanshu Dhulia TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK IANS CTOR Tusshar Kapoor is set to join the six-pack gang in Bollywood. The actor is working out hard for Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, in which he will go shirtless and reveal a sculpted body in a beach sequence. “My trainer is pushing me a lot. He is working hard on me for Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. There is a beach scene and if I have to go shirtless, I will have to be fit,” Tusshar said. “It’s fun to shock people and do something that you have not done before. I also have a seduction scene in the film,” he added. A sequel to 2005 film Kya Kool Hain Hum, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum will be a sex comedy. And Tusshar feels the Indian audience is ready for such content. “Kyaa Super Kool... is quite a mad film. It’s an adult film. Today, everybody is ready for it. They are accepting all kinds of cinema. Nobody is ashamed or embarrassed to watch a sex comedy. India has opened up and we are being very honest with the publicity of our film,” the 35year-old said. Directed by Sachin Yardi, the film, releasing on August 12, also features Riteish Deshmukh. One of the film’s poster has the back of a topless woman in a yellow underwear, and her back reads Guess Who’s Back. “We have a bold trailer (for the film) and we are going to deliver what we are promising. It’s going to be funny and audiences are going to laugh their heart out. When they go home, they will feel light and happy,” he added. Tusshar seems confident with the content and says one doesn’t need U/A certification for a film to work. “The Dirty Picture was ‘A’ certificate. It worked well. Kya Kool Hain Hum was ‘A’. That also worked well... so it all depends on the content,” said Tusshar. A HE success of Paan Singh Tomar hasn’t satiated director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s appetite for biopics. This time around, he will tackle a biopic set in medieval times on Begum Joanna Nobilis Sombre (1753-1836), popularly known as Begum Samru, who started off as a nautch girl (court dancer) in 18th century India, eventually becoming the ruler of Sardhana, a principality near Meerut. Importantly, Rani Mukerji has been pencilled in for the role. A source close to the project revealed that, “Last week, Tigmanshu had a long meeting with Rani at her office in Juhu. She loved the role and agreed in principle.” Asked why Tigmanshu selected Rani, the source said, “The role is tailor made for Rani. Tigmanshu wanted someone who can hold the film on her own.” The modalities are being worked out. “Rani loves Tigmanshu’s style of filmmaking. He is soon going to go for a recce,” added the source. Samru, Begum who started her career as a nautch girl in 18th Century India, eventually became the ruler of Sardhana, a principality near Meerut. She played a critical role in the political struggle in 18th and 19th century India. She was the head of a professionally trained mercenary army, inherited from her European husband, Walter Reinhardt Sombre. This army consisted of Europeans and Indians.
