When you know who grows your food, and how it is grown, you are experiencing true food security! The following is given to help you understand the terms that are used in this Farm Guide. Direct Marketing/Direct Sales: In direct marketing the producer sells directly to the customer, thereby receiving 100% of the customer’s dollar. Common types of direct marketing include CSA subscriptions, farmers markets, and farm stands and wineries open to the public. These specific types of direct marketing are identified throughout the Guide. Other types of direct marketing are operations that are open by appointment only, and those that sell directly to customers by phone, e-mail, or mail. In this Guide, these are described as direct sales. Organic: The USDA determines organic standards and practices through the National Organic Program. This is the USDA definition of organic: “Organic food is produced using sustainable agricultural production practices. Not permitted are most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients, or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Organic meat, poultry eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones.” www.ams.usda.gov Certified Organic Producer: These farms are inspected, documented, and certified to be following organic practices by a third party organization such as CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers.) www.ccof.org Registered Organic Producer: A farm is allowed under USDA rules to sell as organic without being certified if they sell less than $5000 in product annually. There is no third party verification for this status. Farmers who use conventional (non-organic) pesticides are regulated by federal and state laws and county ordinances. The use of pesticides is overseen by the county Agricultural Commissioner. Producers are licensed to apply and permitted to use certain materials that are restricted. Pesticides, whether organic or non-organic, are generally applied to crops by spraying and by dry application. Sustainable: The basic definition refers to farming land in a way that does not deplete the natural resource, but continues to maintain it in a way that will allow it to be productive indefinitely. However, there are no standards or definitions of what that means in actual practice. Biodynamics is a farming method that originated in Europe in the 1920’s. It has many aspects, but at the heart of every biodynamic farm is the understanding that the natural world is dynamic and has a spiritual aspect. These dynamic forces at times are impossible to perceive, however, aligning with natural rhythms (for example the cycles of the moon, or contraction and expansion) allows the practitioner to utilize these great forces in nature. The result is food that is grown using materials already on the farm, and that relies on the wisdom of compost and herbal remedies. www.demeter.net Certified Farmers/Growers Markets: Markets organized specifically to connect producers directly with customers. The markets are certified by the state through the county Agricultural Commissioner. A certified market means only certified agricultural producers are allowed to sell there. Markets are organized by individuals or groups, usually producers. Certified Agricultural Producer: Producers who sell at Certified Farmers/Growers Markets must be certified by the state through the county Agricultural Commissioner, in compliance with the Direct Marketing Act of 1977. This is to ensure that the products they sell were grown by them. It is not a requirement that applies to producers selling by other means. Being a certified market or certified agricultural producer does NOT mean products are certified organic. Also, it does NOT mean that products are produced in the local county or area. Certified Naturally Grown: These farms are inspected, documented and certified to be following Certified Naturally Grown’s growing and program requirements. Farmers producing under this certification are not certified organic. www.naturallygrown.org Contributors to this article: Rita de Quercus, Chris Bierwagen, Marney Blair, Ray Diggins. 8 Nevada County Farm Guide 2015 Everything’s better when it’s locally-grown! It is a direct way to support your local farmers. In return, you receive fresh, healthy, seasonal food and the satisfaction of knowing you are truly making a difference! CSA members invest in the farm at the beginning of the season, when funds are most needed, by purchasing a subscription. Then throughout the season, they receive a weekly box of produce or other goods. Many farms offer opportunities for you to become involved in the farm in other ways, like participating in harvesting.
