Sincerely, Mariya Kovaleva Mariya Kovaleva NGNA Student Leadership Award Application Statement of professional and educational goals My experience of growing up in the area where the majority of older adults lived in poverty and witnessing sacrificial work of family caregivers led to my decision to dedicate my career to the promotion of health and optimal quality of life for older adults and their families, specifically, gerontological nursing research and practice. I have recently finished the first year in the PhD program in Nursing at Emory University. In addition to my doctoral work, I will complete coursework for the Adult-Gerontological Nurse Practitioner – Primary Care specialty. My research interest is promotion of the psychological well-being of caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia by means of telehealth and innovative models of primary care. My dissertation will focus on dementia caregivers who are enrolled in a patientcentered medical home that is managed by advanced practice registered nurses and serves persons with dementia (PWD) and their family caregivers. Upon graduation and completion of a post-doctoral fellowship, I plan to obtain a faculty position at a research-intensive institution where I will continue my research of systems that enhance caregivers’ skills and improve quality of life of PWD and their caregivers. I plan to combine full-time employment as a professor and researcher with part-time work as a nurse practitioner. Clinical practice will enable me to better understand PWD and their caregivers and to maximally tailor my research towards their needs. Work in gerontological research will help me to gain expertise to serve as a credible advocate for older adults. MARIYA A.
