A TRUE INSPIRATION
A 62 year old woman will cycle
100 miles through the City to
raise money for cerebral palsy
after being inspired by a young
friend with the disease who is
bravely training for a junior
triathlon.
Christine Stimpson from
Harworth will join thousands of
cyclists taking part in the
Great Nottinghamshire Bike
Ride (GNBR), part of Cycle Live
Nottingham, and will raise
money for Cerebral Palsy Sport.
Price 20p
Christine’s young friend, eightyear-old Bailey from Worksop,
lives with cerebral palsy and is
currently training for the Castle
Howard Triathlon this summer.
Christine said: “Bailey is
an inspiration to say the least,
and never lets his disability stop
him from having a go at anything.
Bailey often attends the
Clumber Park parkrun and has
also taken part in the Bikeability
scheme at his school on his
adapted bike. He is the reason I am
taking part in the 100-mile challenge because he
has achieved more than an average eight-yearold.”
Christine is a regular cyclist, and has taken
part in several C2C rides, however the GNBR
will be her biggest challenge to date, riding a
large scale distance in a shorter amount of time.
Bailey’s dad, Jonathan, said: “Knowing
Bailey has motivated
Christine to ride
100-miles as a personal

Being Mindful
To mark the Mental Health
Foundation’s Mental Health
Awareness Week 2015,
Nottinghamshire Healthcare
will be celebrating the diversity
of mindfulness used in services
across the organisation to promote
the emotional wellbeing of staff,
service users, carers and
the public.
This year’s Mental Health
Awareness Week, which runs
from 11-17 May, is highlighting
mindfulness, and, more broadly,
the positive steps people can take
to increase mental resilience.
Mindfulness is a positive
response to the pressures of
modern lifestyles in work,
school and
the home, and is an
additional tool
for improving mental health.
Throughout the week
Nottinghamshire Healthcare will
be using Facebook and Twitter
to share how mindfulness-based
techniques permeate many of
our services, as well as staff
and service users’ views of the
practice.
They will also be linking to
articles, mindfulness courses and
mental health organisations to
raise awareness of the importance
of looking after our emotional
wellbeing, because just like
physical health, we all have
mental health, and we all need
to take time to look after our
minds.
People can find out about how
Nottinghamshire Healthcare
uses mindfulness by following
our social media pages:

Two brothers from
Balderton, Newark
have come together
and created a new
independent
film,
DAMAGED. The majority of the cast are from
the East Midlands and the film was made on
almost zero budget.
Darren and David Furness submitted the film
to several international film festivals and won
three awards from Canada, Australia and New
York.
DAMAGED is a dark and
disturbing look into the lives
of six people and the secrets
that they keep- this is a film
for adult viewing only.
The brothers are selfdistributing the film through
an independent distribution
site called VHX which will
enable them to control

The pair

Film Synopsis- Six seemingly
ordinary people hide chilling
secrets of murderous and
sexual acts. They appear to
live normal lives, but their
minds are haunted by a
darker side of human nature.
As they reveal their secrets,
the question of whether any
of us really know anyone,
especially ourselves, raises an
all too disturbing answer.
Damaged will be available
to rent and/or digitally

Cybercrime
Combat
With the number of online
threats increasing, East
Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire,
Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire)
is working with the regional
branches of the UK Cyber
Security Forum and the Institute
of Information Security
Professionals to host the event,
at which business can learn how
serious the threats are and how
best to counter them.
It is estimated that cybercrime
costs UK businesses more than
£6.8bn-a-year and costs the
global economy around £266bn.
The cost of rectifying the damage
caused is also increasing,
making it essential that firms
know the risks, take steps to
combat them and have adequate
insurance in place to cover all
losses if they
are targeted.
Businesses at the event will learn
how insurance fits as part of an
overall risk management strategy,
receive an overview of the current
cyber insurance market, see details
of the policies available and get
hints about how products are
likely to evolve. There will also be
a presentation from
the Department for
Business, Innovation
& Skills on the
latest Government
initiatives.
Andy Watterson, the
Chamber’s Business
Crime Manager, said:
“This event is part of
a series of forums that

for those with an
interest in cyber
security to come
together to share ideas
with peers, build
links to colleagues
with similar roles,
explore issues of

A Life-Saving
Lesson
L - R Liam Bateman, Kurtis Bateman
Ten schools in Nottinghamshire will
be tuning into the biggest first aid
lesson ever on Friday 12th June to give
their pupils the chance to learn vital
skills that could save lives.
The nation’s leading first aid charity is
calling on more schools in the region
to join the Big First Aid Lesson, which
will be hosted by TV presenter Claudia
Winkleman.
So far, the lesson will be educating
over 85,000 pupils up and down the
country, already exceeding St John
Ambulance’s original target of 50,000.
The lesson is a free, one hour, online
first aid training session filmed live
and streamed directly into classrooms
across Nottinghamshire.
It combines first aid training and 999
scenarios with real life stories, as well
as plenty of opportunities for students
to join the conversation via Google
Hangouts.
The Big First Aid Lesson will teach
students how to respond to
emergencies, such as asthma
attacks and head injuries, so
they have the skills and
confidence to be the difference
between life
and death.
The only equipment schools
need to take part is an internet
connection and a screen (such as
an interactive whiteboard) for
their pupils to watch in the
classroom or during assembly.
Claudia Winkleman, TV presenter
and mother of three said: “The
Big First Aid Lesson is a fantastic
and engaging way of teaching
students the skills they may
need to help keep a classmate
or a family member safe in an
emergency while they’re out on
the playground or during the
holidays. All schools should
make teaching young people
basic first aid a top priority.”

Change and
Save Lives
A charity working with homeless
people in the East Midlands is
urging members of the public to
come together on a single day of
fundraising fun this month to help
change and save lives.
Framework, which helps more
than 11,000 homeless and
vulnerable people a year across
the East Midlands, will hold
its fourth annual “Do it for
Framework Day” on Friday, May
22nd. Local groups, schools,
businesses and individuals will
be encouraged to do a special
something for Framework on a
single day of community-based
action.
From sponsored walks to cake
bakes; from offices to classrooms,
people across the region are
needed to take part in a range of
unusual activities in aid of a very
serious cause.
Homelessness remains a visible
issue across Lincolnshire and
Nottinghamshire and the current
demand for Framework’s services
proves this. Every single penny
raised from Do it for Framework
Day will be used to supplement
vital work in the community –
to prevent people from losing
their homes, to help people who
are homeless, and to provide
opportunities for vulnerable people
to change their lives.

Tramlink Nottingham
Executive Chairman, Phil
Hewitt said: “Daytime
running from one end of the
line to the other means we
can really start to ramp up
the essential driver training
programme. All NET’s drivers
have to have an intimate
knowledge of the new routes
and this part of the project will
intensify over the
Free Water
Sport Sessions
coming weeks.
“We understand that people
may now begin to wonder
why they can’t get on the
trams when they can see them
running up and down the lines
to Chilwell and Clifton but we
will be working closely with
our partners to make sure the
system is open to the public
as soon as possible. There can
however be no shortcuts taken
in the system tests and training
as we have to be sure that when
we do open for passengers
the network is both safe and
reliable.”
Mr Hewitt added: “So far the
commissioning programme has
been going extremely well and
we’re looking forward to day
time trials being extended to
the whole of the Beeston line in
the near future.”

A mural designed by local
school children has been
installed and unveiled in Arnot
Hill Park.
Local artist Jess Kemp worked
with a group of students in years
7-9 from Arnold Hill Academy
to design and create panels to
cover the window spaces on the
former aviary in the rose garden in
Arnot Hill Park.
As well as the students
contributing to painting the mural,
there was also involvement from
children from Arno Vale Junior

Gedling Homes and families
from the Debz4coffee group.

South Notts Freemasons and
the Great Central Railway on
Sunday 17th May at 10.00am.
This will be in aid of charity
Faith in Families and promises
to be a great day out for all.
Jayne was very happy to support
an event providing fun for
all the family, whilst raising
funds for a charity close to her
heart: “Faith in Families has a
national reputation for delivering
exceptional high standards in all
it does, so it is an honour to be
supporting a charity that does
such excellent work on behalf
of vulnerable children. Having
adopted two children myself,
adoption is a cause particularly
close to my heart.
I am very keen to support Faith

and therefore was delighted to
be able to open the Fun Day at

Local Stapleford people who are retired or no
longer in full-time employment have signed-up
for new University of the Third Age (U3A) to
create new opportunities for themselves and
make friends.
Over 80 people from Stapleford and nearby
crowded into Stapleford Methodist Church on
6th May to join Stapleford U3A (University
of the Third Age) and to sign-up for interest
groups to enhance their lives since completing
full-time employment. "I was delighted to see
the church crowded with people who wanted
to support a U3A in our town," said steering
committee chairman Trevor Williams, a retired
baker, confectioner and minister who moved
to Stapleford from Bristol five years ago to be
nearer to his family.
Trevor first became involved with continued
learning when helping Malawi food aid
programmes in 2006 and, with his wife, has
visited the country three times. Over the years
the programmes have raised nearly £1/4M.
The eight interest groups now planning their
programmes are members who want to want
to share interests in local history, crafts, short
walks and rambling, gardening, family history,
photography for fun, books, singing for fun and
bridge and canasta.
They will be recruiting more members at the
next meeting, at the
Methodist Church on
3rd June and members
will be helped to start
new ones covering any
other subjects they want.
They will also hear what
should be an entertaining
and instructive talk.
The meeting starts at 2
o’clock.
Membership of
Stapleford U3A costs £20
annually to cover the cost
of venue hire and other
running costs but visitors
will be welcome to come
along free of charge to one
meeting to see if they want to join.

The Grantham Canal
Society maintains a
4.5 mile section from
the A1 at Grantham to
Woolsthorpe by Belvoir.
The society is
a committee led volunteer
organisation and an

and was first formed
in 1960. It has since
been responsible for the
restoration of five locks,
numerous bridges and
the removal of the entire

Much credit goes to
numerous organisations
who have generously
contributed the necessary
funds. They currently
operate a growing

the latest acquisition
being Osberton, a weed

source of income is their
trip boat, The Three

Look After
Those Pearly
Whites…!
Oral health charity the British
Dental Health Foundation is
delighted to announce the return
of National Smile Month, a
campaign which aims to
improve the oral health
of millions of adults and
children throughout the
United Kingdom.
It is a staggering thought,
but in primary schools
across the UK around
eight or nine children
in every class will have
already developed
tooth decay. That’s
approaching a quarter
of a million children in
each primary school year
and around 3.3 million
young people aged 0-14
years while around one in
four children are starting
school with visible signs
of tooth decay.
Ten facts about dental
care for mother and baby
1. Your gums may bleed more
easily during pregnancy due to
hormonal changes, and so frequent
visits to the dentist and a high level
of oral hygiene are advised.
2. Your baby is more likely to have
poor teeth if you smoke due to the
enamel not being formed correctly.
3. Good nutrition from
the mother during
pregnancy is important
in order for baby’s
teeth to develop.
4. Adult teeth are
developing in the jaws
below baby teeth at
birth.
5. Expect teething
to begin around six
months and last until
all 20 baby teeth arrive
at around 2 and a half.
6. Signs of teething
include swollen or red
gums where the tooth
is coming through, the
cheek on the side of the
mouth where the tooth
is appearing may be red
and disrupted sleeping
pattern for both parents

and baby.
7. Poor oral health during
pregnancy
increases the
chances of
premature
birth and low
birth weight
babies.
8. Dental
treatment
is perfectly
safe during
pregnancy,
but do inform
your dentist.
9. There is no
truth in the
rumour about calcium deficiency
due to pregnancy causes tooth
problems.
10. You are entitled to free NHS
dental treatment, including
check-ups and prescriptions, if
you are pregnant or have given
birth in the last 12 months.
In the past, taking care of your
child’s teeth might have slipped
under the radar when it came
to their general up-bringing but
arming them with knowledge
now can prevent many
complications and unnecessary
treatments in the future. Figures
show that not all parents are
aware of how important good
oral health is. Children who lack
basic oral hygiene need to be
educated on how and why they
should brush their teeth. Taking
bad habits into adulthood is more
likely to result in decay, tooth
loss
and
gum
disease,
which
has been
linked to a
whole manner
of serious
conditions such
as diabetes,
strokes, heart
disease as well
as dementia. It
all means that
making sure the
child’s mouth
stays healthy is
about far more
than achieving
and maintaining
a pearly white
smile.

Public, private and voluntary
sector organisations in
Nottinghamshire came together
to make a united stand against all
forms of homophobia, biphobia
and transphobia and launch a new
initiative against hate crime.
Partners including the County
Council, City Council, Police,
Fire and Rescue, East Midlands
Ambulance Service and the Police
and Crime Commissioner raised
the Rainbow Flag at a ceremony
at County Hall, West Bridgford
earlier this week.
The ceremony launched a series
of events across the county
and the city on the run up to
the International Day Against
Homophobia, Biphobia and
Transphobia on 17th May. Over
100 Rainbow flags were raised
at locations across the county,
including at all district and
borough council offices, both
universities and a number of
businesses,
schools, colleges and hospitals.
The event commemorates the
day in 1990 when the World
Health Organisation declassified
homosexuality as a mental disorder
and is an annual landmark day for
everyone who opposes prejudice
and discrimination.
The County Council
proactively promotes its services
to the LGBT community, including
civil partnerships and
marriages through its registration
service and opportunities for
fostering and adoption.

Moussaka
Serve with a tomato salad and crisp green salad. This recipe uses ground cumin and coriander for an authentic flavour, but
omit if your children don’t like spicy flavours. This is a good recipe for adding leftover potatoes and vegetables. By scrubbing the
potatoes and not peeling them you are saving on excess waste, also a lot of the nutrients come from the potato skin.
SERVES: 10-12
INGREDIENTS:
• 500g waxy potatoes, scrubbed and cut into thick slices • 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 onions, peeled and chopped • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
• ½ teaspoon ground cumin (optional) • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 900g minced lamb • 700ml chicken stocks|stock either homemade or from cubes
• 80g butter • 75g plain flour • 1.2 litres milk • 1 teaspoon mustard
• 250g leftover grated cheese • 4 eggs
• Pinch of nutmeg • Black peppercorns • Salt
METHOD:
• Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) mark 5. Put the potatoes in a large pan of water, bring up to the boil and simmer for about
15 minutes until they are just cooked. Drain and set aside.
• Heat the oil in a large frying pan, add the onion, garlic and
spices and cook for 5 minutes or until soft. Turn up the heat and
add the lamb mince and cook, stirring, for another 4-5 minutes,
add the tomatoes and season well. Continue to cook for about
20-25 minutes adding the stock in stages.
• To make the sauce, place the butter, flour, milk and mustard in a
small saucepan and, whisking continuously, cook over a medium
heat until the sauce begins to boil and thicken. Turn down the
heat to its lowest and let the sauce cook for 2 minutes. Allow to
cool a little then add the grated cheese (reserving a handful for
the topping) and eggs, nutmeg and seasoning.
• In a large shallow ovenproof dish or individual freezer dishes,
layer the meat with the potato slices, finishing with a neat layer of
potato slices. Pour the sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle with
the reserved grated cheese.
• Place in the preheated oven to cook for 25-30 minutes or until
golden and bubbling.
Veolia, (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors), are
encouraging Nottinghamshire residents to make the most of their
leftovers with the help of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign.
Cutting down on food waste could save the average family with
children £700 a year.

All photos are of the recent V.E. Day celebrations in Nottingham.
Nottinghamshire in Focus reader,
Margaret Thornber sent us a
feature that she had written about
V.E. day and local life in the early
1950’s. The article gives you an
insight of the thoughts and feelings
of the young people who grew up
during the war and matured in the
post war period. The following is
just an extract of Margaret’s piece
but will be available to purchase
online in due course.
The Eyes of a Teenager
By M.S.Thornber
The shoes seemed tighter after
the first two miles though Brenda
supposed she must be imagining it.
It had seemed a good idea to jump
off the bus and join the conductor
on the roadside and walk the
distance home from Nottingham.
A dense curtain of green bilelike fog veiled the buildings and
road markings in the years of the
early 1950s. The smell of sulphur
laced with coal smoke assaulted
the nose and choked off the air
supply. Muffled sounds were
discernible but unidentifiable to
the intrepid travellers tackling the
evening journey home. Crocodile
lines of humanity mingled with
public transport, as it struggled to
maintain any schedule.
The double decker bus inched after
the conductor as he highlighted
the way forward on the ground by
a single torchlight. Murky yellow
street lights inadequately fought to
make any difference.
The smog ridden city of
Nottingham like so many other
cities in 1950's Britain was a
consequence of the coal fuelled
industry and domestic demands.
Air pollution was frequent and
compromised the health of the
citizens. It was
preferable though
to the hardships
endured after the
2nd World War.

Women
in Sport
The Lawn Tennis Association
(LTA), in partnership with Nike,
has launched an exciting new
nationwide initiative, Tennis
Tuesdays. The first sessions took
place last week, where hundreds
of women got their first taste of
Tennis Tuesdays. Women can
enjoy this new way of playing
tennis throughout the summer until
October.
The programme aims to tackle the
gender gap in sports participation,
offering pop up female only tennis
events at parks and clubs. The
sessions offer informal coaching,
weekly themed sessions and fun
match play.
Tennis Tuesdays is taking place
at over 90 venues with sessions
happening
across the
country
including
in London,
Manchester,
Birmingham,
Cardiff,
Eastbourne,
Edinburgh,
Glasgow and Leeds.
Tennis Tuesdays is an innovative
way to meet the requirements
women are crying out for, namely
more opportunities and better
tailored access to sport.

First time on the
property ladder?
By Gemma Allen
With house prices having
consistently risen faster
than wages in recent years it
is difficult for first
time buyers
to get onto the property
ladder, but it’s
not impossible.
To make things easier
the Help to Buy scheme helps
make buying a
home within the reach
of many.
The first question many
ask is ‘how big is my deposit’,
but it shouldn’t be. The most
important question is how
much you can afford to pay
on a monthly basis. This will
determine how much you
should, not could, borrow.
Only buy what you can
afford…
Always bear in mind what you can
realistically afford, it’s ok
thinking at the time that you will
take the higher mortgage in order to
live in a nicer house but in reality,
you won’t be able to enjoy living
in said house if you are up to your
ears in debt.
It’s not just your mortgage, there’s
council tax, gas and electric,
phone bills,
internet and home insurance,
along with your food and
travel expenses.
You also need to account for the
unexpected, such things as
illness or your partner being
made redundant.
costs. There’s a mortgage booking
fee, an arrangement fee, a valuation
fee, an account fee, legal costs, a
search fee, survey fees and
moving costs.
That’s before you take into account
any stamp duty which applies to
properties worth over £125,000.
In total that means setting aside
at least £3,500 of your deposit to
pay for the other moving costs.
Help to Buy mortgage
The government-backed Help to Buy mortgage
scheme is a way to help those with low deposits
get on the housing ladder.
The first phase, launched in April 2013, saw
the government offering people buying new
build homes a 20% loan on top of their own
5% deposit.

The Alnwick is a beautifully

Both homes promote a practical

often the biggest single investment
lifetime, and
show homes are a crucial visual
tool to illustrate how that blank
canvas can be shaped into the
perfect home,” .” said Jan Ruston,

distinctive themes for each show
home, offering homebuyers a few

“Homebuyers looking for the latest
in interior design trends are sure to
find them here. Both homes have
been designed to promote a stylish,
yet practical lifestyle that will
appeal to a range of buyers.
“The Alnwick, for example, has
been designed as a relaxed and
inviting family home. We used a
soft colour scheme of greys, taupes
and sage green with luxury fabrics
and wall coverings in subtle soft
metallic to add texture and patterns
throughout.
“We designed a creative family
home in the Stratford with muted
mauves, blush pink and soft grey
older girl’s room we used feature
wallpaper to create a sewing and
dress making inspired theme.”
