exceedingly difficult time for him,
his family and friends.
“I am keen to support the charity

Newlife Foundation, the
UK’s leading charity provider
of equipment for children
with disabilities, is urgently
appealing for help so children in
Nottinghamshire can receive the
equipment they desperately need.
Right now there are 19 children
with disabilities or terminal illness
in Nottinghamshire who are at risk
of worsening pain, injury or their
condition deteriorating – while
their families are placed under
additional pressure. They need
your help to get the specialist
equipment that will really change
their lives.
Newlife has already helped 295
children in Nottinghamshire,
spending £282,978 but the charity
has seen a 25 per cent increase in
applications this year compared
to last year and has no budget at
this time to help meet the needs of
these 19 children.
Newlife needs to raise £17,050
in Nottinghamshire to help
children like three-year-old

without help and needs a special
car seat to keep her safe and

any donation or funds raised in

Equipment has the power to

knows the difference each and
every donation or fundraising
event can make to the life of a
child and their family.
David said: “With so many

people in the local community to

call to speak to about financial support.
They understand and fully support our
business plan and aspirations.

grow the business and particularly to
expand our private client work.”
First Enterprise provides loans

Leon Hady
HEADTEACHER
LAUNCHES
E-LEARNING KIT
A headteacher is aiming to tackle
the shortfall in one-to-one pupilteacher support in many schools
by launching his own video
e-learning hub.
Leon Hady, the celebrated
headteacher at Nottingham’s
Stone Soup Academy, has selffunded TuitionKit, an online suite
of interactive video content to
support revision in Maths, English
and Science for GSCE and A
Level students aiming for the
highest grades.
This comes amid concerns that
teachers across the country have
less time to focus on individual
student revision in the run up to
GCSE exams, due to increased
administrative demands and
limited resources.
Leon said: “The growing burden
of red tape placed on many
teachers is restricting ability
to provide booster sessions for
pupils needing the most help. As
a result, parents are turning to
private tutoring at considerable
cost – which just isn’t an option
for poorer families. High quality
tuition should be available to
everyone, regardless of how much
their parents earn.”
TuitionKit is an affordable
subscription service which allows
pupils to watch over 1,000 tutorials
and review over 200 model exam
question answers, all the while
tracking their learning progress.
Pupils learn at their own pace,
away from inappropriate content
and adverts that can punctuate
tutorials on YouTube, for example.
Leon said: “I’ve been sharing
revision guidance electronically
since 2009 and it has
consistently improved the grades
of many pupils. Feedback indicates
that people prefer to learn by
tracking and controlling their
progress - recapping, taking breaks
and focussing on the subject matter
that will help the most in their
exams.
“I set up a channel on YouTube
initially, and discovered that
thousands of people were
accessing the videos. This quickly
grew to millions of views around
the world, leading to positive
comments from thousands of
pupils, many of whom achieved
A and A* grades thanks to my
video content, without ever
having met them in person. I then
teamed up with other excellent,
passionate teachers,
like Jonathan Hicks,
a maths specialist, to
bring other subjects to
students.”
Leon, who was one of
the first headteachers
in the UK to guide a
Community Based
Free School to an
outstanding Ofsted
review, believes
TuitionKit will also
benefit teachers,
adding:
“TuitionKit is a
valuable
resource for busy teachers who
just do not have the time to
provide additional help outside of
lessons, and want to guide pupils
to a trusted learning resource.
Teaching staff can also dip into
our resources when preparing for
a lesson or looking to refresh
their knowledge of a particular
subject area.”
A one-off subscription fee of
£29 for all core GCSE subjects
(English, Maths and Science),
approximately equivalent to the
cost of an hour’s private teacher
tuition, grants full access to the
E-learning facility for a year.
Leon has also established
learning rooms in Egypt and
Brazil and hopes to establish more
in the future.

WORKPLACE
CHALLENGE
orkplaces across Nottinghamshire are being
encouraged to take part in the third phase of
the Workplace Challenge, commencing on
1st June 2015.
The Workplace Challenge started on the 5th
January 2015 and invited workplaces across
Nottinghamshire to take part in a physical
activity themed challenge. Since the launch
in January, over 700 individuals have
registered with over 130 Nottinghamshire
workplaces
now represented.
After the success of the initial phase,
Sport Nottinghamshire, organisers of the
challenge, are looking to increase activity
in the workplace by launching a new
two-week challenge, aimed at females, in
conjunction with Nottinghamshire’s This
Girl
Can campaign. Sarah Williams,
Club Development Officer for Sport
Nottinghamshire, said: “This Girl Can
is a fantastic initiative to encourage
more females to get involved in sport in
Nottingham.
“We wanted to involve the campaign
within the workplace challenge and hope
by doing so will motivate females to log
their activity, get active and have fun. It is
a fantastic opportunity for individuals to

TAKE ON A CHALLENGE
THIS SUMMER
Help build a helipad!
You could take on the challenge

Daredevils could descend from

might like to take on the London

Nottingham Hospitals Charity is
organising these and a whole host
of other challenge events, such
as skydives and treks, in aid of
our Saving Lives Helipad Appeal,
which aims to raise £3m to build
an onsite helipad at the Queen’s
Medical Centre.

HELPING TO SAVE
STREET PASTORS
Danielle Asano
The Nottingham Business
Improvement District (BID),
the Nottinghamshire Police and
Crime Commissioner, Paddy
Tipping, and intu, the owners
of the Victoria and Broadmarsh
shopping centres, have stepped in
to safeguard the immediate future
of Nottingham city centre’s Street
Pastors by agreeing to provide
the necessary funding to ensure
that they can keep operations
going in the short- term. The
Street Pastors had been receiving
funding from Comic Relief but
this has now come to an end so
they were in danger of folding.
The Nottingham BID already
supports the Street Pastors as part
of its activities to ensure a safer
late night economy in the city
centre and had plans to provide
additional support to them,
assuming that the BID secures a
second term when it comes up for
renewal this summer.
“Our members that operate in
the night time economy really
value the work of the Street
Pastors and this is why we have
decided to step in and help now
by providing additional funding,”
said Jeff Allen, chairman of the
Nottingham BID. “They help
look after vulnerable people who
are enjoying a night out in the
city centre, taking pressure off the
police and the medical services,
who can devote their time and
resources to more serious incidents
as a result. Their activities save the
emergency services a lot of money,
too.”
Paddy Tipping said that the Street
Pastors play a valuable role in
helping to keep people safe:
“Nottingham’s nightlife has a great
deal to offer and I want everyone
to enjoy themselves and have a
good time. However, sometimes
things get a bit out of hand and the
Street Pastors help to keep people
out of trouble and reduce the
possibility that they, or others, may
come to harm, saving demand on
other services such as the police.”

Golden Shepherds Pie
This is a great recipe for getting
children to eat vegetables without
them noticing. This recipe will feed
8-10 people so if you're cooking for
less, make in two dishes and freeze
the second dish, or freeze in individual
portion containers.
Serves: 8-10
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons olive oil;
• 4 onions, peeled and roughly
chopped;
• 1.35kg minced lamb;
• 2 level teaspoons tomato puree;
• 1 teaspoon dried rosemary or
thyme;
• 2 level teaspoons yeast
extract|marmite;
• 50g plain flour;
• 2 x 400g canned chopped
tomatoes;
• 500ml water or meat stock;
• 1.35kg potatoes, peeled and
chopped;
• 500g carrots, peeled and chopped;
• 100ml warm milk;
• 50g butter;
• 50g red Leicester cheese, grated;
• A sprig of herbs.
Method:
1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan
and cook onion until golden brown.
Add the meat and cook for a
further 5-10 minutes. Add
the tomato puree, herbs,
Marmite, Worcestershire
sauce and flour. Cook over
the heat for 2-3 minutes.
Transfer to a saucepan and
add the chopped tomatoes,
water or meat stock, cover
and allow to bubble gently
for 45 minutes, stirring
occasionally.
2. Meanwhile, cook or steam
the potatoes in a pan of
water for 20-25 minutes or
until soft. Add the chopped
carrots to the potatoes
for the last 10 minutes of
cooking. Drain well and
return to the pan. Mash the
potatoes with the carrots
and add the warm milk and
the butter, and beat until
fluffy and smooth.
3. Preheat the oven to
180°C (350°F) mark 4. Put
the meat mixture into an
ovenproof dish or individual
freezer dishes. Top with the
potato and carrot mixture
and sprinkle with the Red
Leicester cheese, decorate
with a sprig of rosemary.
Cook for 35-40 minutes or
until golden and bubbling.

PLAN
AHEAD
Order repeat prescriptions
in time for the bank
holiday
Patients in Nottingham City
are being urged to check their
medicine cabinets and order any
repeat prescriptions in plenty of
time for the May bank holiday.
“If you know you’ll need to
take medication over the bank
holiday take a moment now
to plan ahead and make sure
you have time to get your
prescriptions and medication,”
said Hugh Porter, Clinical
Chair of NHS Nottingham City
Clinical Commissioning Group
(CCG) and a GP at Cripps Health
Centre. “A little forward planning
now could save a great deal of
inconvenience and help make
sure everyone has a relaxing
break.”
GP surgeries will be closed on
bank holiday Monday and many
pharmacies will be operating
reduced opening hours.
If you do need medical help or
advice over the bank holidays
there are a number of places that
can help:
If you need help fast but don’t
think it’s a 999 emergency, you
can call 111. The service is
available 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, and is free to
call from landlines and mobile
phones.
If you have a minor illness or
injury you can go to an NHS
walk-in centre at London Road or
on Upper Parliament Street.
If you need advice for minor
health problems you can speak
to your pharmacist for on-thespot advice and remedies for a
wide range of problems such
as stomach upsets, coughs and
colds. Details of Nottingham City
pharmacies that are open on bank
holiday Monday can be found on
the CCG’s website at
www.bit.ly/bank_hol_
pharmacies.
Information is also available
online via NHS Choices – here
you will find a wide range of
online health and symptom
checkers at www.nhs.uk.
If you think you need to see a GP
out-of-hours, telephone 111. The
111 service can put you in contact with the GP outof-hours service, which can arrange for you to see
a doctor or nurse during evenings and weekends if
needed.
You should only call 999 or visit
the Emergency Department
(A&E) in a real emergency. This
includes a serious injury or lifethreatening problem such as loss
of consciousness, severe breathing
difficulty, heavy bleeding, severe
chest pain, suspected broken bones,
deep wounds (e.g. stab wounds),
swallowing something harmful or
poisonous or a drug overdose.

LEMON HANDS

Creative entrepreneur Lisa
Robertson has been inspired to
design a collection of hands free
bags after years of fruitlessly
searching for an attractive
replacement for the ugly belt
bag she had worn to keep her
valuables safe during travelling.
Now Lisa has quit her job as a

when I

to either
keep my hands free or keep my
precious belongings close by, I
used a rather ugly old belt bag,”
said Lisa, from West Bridgford,
near Nottingham. “After looking
around for an alternative I found
there was nothing on the market
and that’s how Lisa Lemon hands

Her initial design, in two different
colours, is now available, but Lisa
has just started a crowd funding
appeal to launch her collection,
with two new designs added to
the range, plus accessories. She

JOIN FORCES FOR
NURSES’ DAY
New College Nottingham
(ncn) Health and Social Care
students came together with
NHS healthcare professionals to
celebrate International Nurses’
Day on 12th May, in recognition
of the fantastic work nurses and
midwives do all over the world.
The event, which was organised
in partnership with the
Nottingham University Hospitals
(NUH) NHS Trust, gave students
the chance to meet healthcare
professionals from departments
including: emergency, child
services, care for the elderly,
community nursing, and
midwifery. Students heard firsthand what it’s like to work in
the sector and they were able
to learn about the many career
opportunities available in the
locality.
ncn Clarendon was
overwhelmed with interest
and support, with more than
30 stalls giving all kinds of
information on careers and health
issues, from sexual health to
critical care, and visitors even got
to try their hand at practical skills
in the college’s brand new

course has seen a record number of
applicants this academic year, with
a rise from 80 learners in 2012/13
to more than 200 now.
ncn Faculty Head for Care, Liza-Jo
Guyatt, said: “With increasing
numbers of students applying for
our Care courses, we are confident
that we’ll be able to fill the skills

“We understand the importance

“Lisa Lemon hands free bags
are gorgeous, expertly crafted,
leather bags which fit snuggly
around the waist,” explained
Lisa. “They are not designed to
be discreet or hidden away. They
are statement bags, happy to be
in the limelight. “Each bag has an
internal phone pocket and clip to
keep your keys and Lisa Lemon
accessories safely attached inside
your bag.” Recent statistics
show that each day over 400,000
incidents of pick pocketing occur
around the world and the internal
clip and accessories ring will
give some peace of mind when
you're out and about, added Lisa.
After studying graphic design
in Derby, Lisa worked for a
number of design agencies in
Nottingham, including a spell
co-running her own agency
with a partner. She has also
mentored design businesses and
graduates from creative courses
at Nottingham Trent University.
More recently she has been on
the commercial side of business,
working in IT as a commercial
director.
“I always had this yearning to
go back to doing something
creative,” said Lisa. “Someone
said to me ‘you need to do
something that feeds your soul’
and that resonated with me.”
Lisa has had some excellent
feedback from those who have
already used Lisa Lemon hands
free bags.
“A group of girls from West
Bridgford took one to Leeds
Festival and they thought it was
great,” she says. “A friend took
one to America and said it was
invaluable. She described it as
being like her third hand. I used
mine on a visit to Australia and
it was perfect. I wasn’t stressing
about having my bag stolen. All
my valuables, like my purse,
passport, phone and tickets were
attached to me, which gave me
peace of mind.”

to local universities. “In the last
academic year four out of every
five students studying Access
to Nursing secured a place at

For T hat
Special
Day
By Gemma Allen
Getting married is undoubtedly
one of the biggest events of your
life and as
a couple
very much
in love you
want to enjoy
the whole
experience
of starting a
life together
from the very
beginning.
Before
rushing into
setting a date
and getting
stressed by
the whole
process,
take a step
back and allow yourself to enjoy
the run up to one of the most
important days of your life. The
31
last thing you should do is
get madly focused on getting
everything done right away
and making every decision in a
split second. It doesn’t matter if
your wedding day is next week
or next year, the important
thing to remember is that
it’s your day and you should
cherish every moment of it.
Planning your wedding doesn’t
have to be stressful. Careful
preparation, keeping within
budget and simply enjoying
what you are doing will make
things far easier for both of
you. Savour every second as
the memories that you are
creating will last forever.
