Nina with Chef Keith
Fabulous food, friends and
song was the theme of

5th Birthday Party.
Mouthwatering canapés from
their events and hospitality
menu were devoured by
happy guests, along with
champagne in unceasing supply.
Young customers at Sid & Evie’s Children’s clothing store had a great

Parents starting Back to School planning now will find a great range of
suitable, quality school shoes, plus trained Start-rite fitters.
Now stocking iconic brand - Kickers! (More details ad - back page)
Talented and soulful duo, She
Adores performed an acoustic set to

It was apparent everyone was sincere
in their toast to Nina and her team at
Espressimo, and to many more years
to come.
Young South Woodford actor Harry Polden features in the latest internet
video by daredevil stunt cycling sensation, Danny MacAskill.
Called Imaginate and sponsored by Red Bull, the film enters the imaginary
world of the young Danny (Harry - above) as he plays in his bedroom.
The boy's imaginings become real as the scene turns into a giant landscape
of Danny's toys - a huge train set, Dandy annual & rubric cube on which
the grown-up Danny M performs breathtaking cycling stunts.
Some of the stunts took up to 300 takes to get right.
Check out on YouTube - Danny MacAskill's Imaginate
14 year old Harry has a great CV of acting roles, appearing currently in the
Ken Branagh Macbeth (showing at the Odeon July 20th) and this summer
in A Doll's House in the West End.

Churchfield
Pharmacy...
a blend of tradition & innovation
When pharmacist Imran Jan took
over and refurbished
Churchfield Pharmacy
5 years ago, he made sure
that he retained the
sturdy apothecary's chest
with its labelled drawers,
and the attractive
chemist's glass jars that
date back to the original shop of
1889. "I very much wanted to retain
the traditional aura of the old
pharmacy.”
The Healthpoint Interactive
Touch Screen system is designed
specifically for pharmacies to give
customers free, up to date
information and advice on health
matters.
On the interactive screen you can
choose a particular health topic,
say a sympton or illness, then by
following pointers and answering
a series of questions, you arrive
at a personalised result - a
comprehensive guide in easy to
understand language, to the
condition, its treatment options, diet
& lifestyle advice & recommended
(non-branded) products.
The charming period atmosphere
sits side by side with the latest
technology recently introduced in
the store - a Healthpoint Interactive
Touchscreen system, which gives a
free, personalised health assessment
to each customer based on over
3,500 different health topics.
(See feature below).
The refurbishment has
allowed space for a
greater range of
healthcare products
plus many skin care &
beauty ranges such as Vichy, Dr.
Hauschka & Tisserand and an array
of discounted fragrances.
Traditional values guide standards
The results can then be printed off
or e-mailed to yourself, a friend or a
patient.
The service has a database of 3,500
topics ranging from minor coughs
and colds to diabetes or cancer and
a useful "How to" section explains,
for example, how to administer CPR
or how to apply a wet dressing.
The information is continually being
updated by a team of healthcare
professional to provide the latest in
medical research.
The system enhances the role of the
pharmacist too, explains Imran.
Patients can sometimes struggle to
of customer service. With the
convenience of Sunday opening, the
two full-time pharmacists, pharmacy
technician and highly trained front
staff continue to provide high levels
of service to customers from
Woodford, South Woodford and
Wanstead.
"We at Churchfield's believe in the
old philosophy of providing the best
possible care with utmost diligence to
its patients," says Imran.
The pharmacy is also one of the few
local pharmacies to provide almost
all of the services permitted under
the NHS Local Authority.
(for services - see ad below)
describe their symptoms accurately,
but with the new system on ipad, the
pharmacist can now go through the
questionnaire with the patient in
private, gaining a clearer picture of
the problem and thus increasing the
likelihood of finding the most
effective treatment.
Staff have immediate access via the
screen to the most recent medical
information and there are further
categories for staff training on a
numberous topics. The instore
touch screen and innovative 24 hour
"Interactive Window Screen” outside
are available in this area only at
Churchfield Pharmacy.

CONCEALERS & COLOUR
CORRECTORS
Concealers are similar to foundation in terms
of evening out the skin, but are of a thicker
consistency and tend to be more heavily
pigmented. They are used to mask dark circles,
and other small visible blemishes on the skin.
Colour correctors, also known as neutralizers,
are used to cover larger blemishes or
"correct" skin discolorations like redness
from rosacea or blue/dark under-eye circles.
If you have obvious visible blemishes and/or skin discoloration that you want
to cover, use a corrector first to tone down the blemish, then use a concealer
on top of the corrector. The reason for using the corrector is to cancel out
the discoloration that you are seeing and camouflage the blemish.
COLOUR CORRECTORS:
l Green Corrector - used to neutralize redness on the face, so if you
have rosacea this helps to counteract the redness and tone it down.
l Orange Corrector - used to neutralize dark blue circles and visible veins.
l Lavender corrector - used to brighten sallow, dull, pale skin.
NOTE: Please use correctors very sparingly or you could run the risk of having
horrible patches of colour on your face and looking dirty!
COVERING UP BLEMISHES:
l Use a concealer a similar color to your foundation so as not to draw
attention to the blemish you are trying to cover.
l Once you apply the corrector or concealer, blend and smooth out the
edges with a brush or your finger.
l Powder. Using a small clean fluffy blending brush and starting at the
outer corner of your eye, press and roll the brush to apply the powder
on the area to help hide the discoloration and smooth out the area.

Dental
Implants
The implant is a titanium rod which
fuses over time with the jawbone
and supports replacement teeth.
Once placed the new teeth look,
feel and function like natural teeth.
“Many denture wearers are unhappy
with them,” says Moona Malik of
Woodford House Dental Practice.
“They either don’t wear them or they
find it’s a struggle to eat certain foods
like meat or crunchy vegetables.
They can avoid going to restaurants or
eating with their friends and end up
with a poorer diet, for example,
choosing soft bread and mushy
vegetables.”
Dental implants offer a great
alternative to removable dentures.
There are two appointments prior
to the work. A first appointment
consists of a thorough examination
of the teeth, a CT scan and all
relevant x-rays, cancer screening
and full medical history. At a follow
up appointment three weeks later
you will receive a full report, giving a
range of options and costings.
“We will fully explain the various
options and will always be guided by a
patient’s wishes. Our aim is always
what is best for the patient in the long
term,” said Moona. “You can start
with a single tooth then go for a fuller
upgrade of more teeth later. Patients
have been delighted with the results.
The teeth are extremely natural-looking
and you can then go and enjoy that
steak in public with family & friends!”

Yoga for
Health
A professional acrobat aged 17, she was working in
the corporate world when she caught the Yoga ‘bug’
on a trip to India and Air Yoga was her first business
venture. “It was something of a risk!” she admits.
However, the studio has gone from strength to
strength. Since opening two & a half years ago,
over 1,000 local clients have taken part in classes
and next year the Studio is set to become a
training centre offering qualifications for Yoga and
Pilates teachers + a massage training qualification.
There is a regular daily timetable of Yoga and
Pilates and all classes are at a level suitable for
most people, including beginners. The yoga is
mainly 'Hatha' yoga. Hatha yoga incorporates
breathing and relaxation exercises and is good for
physical and mental well-being. The stretching &
balancing is great for flexibility - "the often forgotten
third aspect of fitness", says Kirsty - "which are
cardiovascular, strengthening and flexibility. Yoga is
extremely beneficial for sports people."
Soon-to-be mum Kirsty Apicella radiates
good health and is a great advertisement for
her Yoga and Pilates studio,Air Yoga, on
George Lane.
Pilates exercises are designed to improve the 'core'
body muscles, improve flexibility and strength and
are great for strengthening the back, relieving back
pain, injury prevention and rehabilitation.
During the pregnancy, she tells the Gazette, she
has been regularly attending the studio’s Pregnancy
Yoga classes. “Pregnancy Yoga uses gentler techniques
to strengthen the body and the focus on breath control
really helps you get ready for the big day. You can do
it until beyond your due date and it’s also a great way
to meet other mums-to-be!” she explains.
Other classes include Pregnancy Yoga, Mum Baby
Yoga and Meditation.
All exercises are designed to be performed at
home as well as the studio and one to one classes
are also available.
The centre is also a hub for other therapies,
including specialist sports massage (see offer front
page ad), holistic massage, chinese medicine,
counselling, Reiki and Osteopathy.
"We have a great team of teachers and therapists,"
says Kirsty, "and our classes provide a friendly, noncompetitive environment. All ages and abilities can
attend and many friendships have been made.
It has been a fantastic two & a half years and I look
forward to continuing as we are and meeting new
people along the way."
All equipment is provided. Clothing worn
should be loose and comfortable. Classes
timetable is available at www.air-yoga.co.uk
along with other info. Please book a class
beforehand to avoid disappointment.
More details on front page advertisement.
Any questions you can call Kirsty on:
07949575468, e-mail air-yoga@hotmail.co.uk
After the birth, she is looking forward to joining in
the Mum and Baby Yoga classes at the studio.
Air Yoga has been a successful venture for Kirsty.

Moving words...
Whether it's advice for back pain or as part of strategies to reduce obesity,
diabetes and heart disease, we're being told to 'keep active', whatever our age.
Just how 'active' is 'active' though? Current guidance says that adults should
do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week. It's not a bad
rule of thumb to think of that as '30 a day' and even that can be broken into
smaller pieces. If you can weave it into your daily routine, so much the better.
'Moderate intensity' means that your heart rate increases, you breathe faster
and feel warmer. We're also advised to do some light muscle strengthening
activities, working on all major muscle groups, on two or more days a week.
I've become addicted to a small tracker device to monitor my '30 a day' incorporated into a target of '10,000 steps a day'. That's the equivalent of a
day in the house or garden and a walk from the Churchill statue to South
Woodford tube and back. 'What doesn't get measured doesn't get done'
and I find this a great motivator, and shamer, to make sure that I throw in
even more steps after a day of relative inactivity!
For the muscle strengthening, you may need some advice initially on what the
major muscle groups are and how to approach light weight training.
The internet can help with that but it's safer to go to a gym or invest in a
session with a personal trainer to get you started.
The Curves gym approach hits the spot with me with just the right balance
of light weights and cardio. Aim to find something that you enjoy and look
forward to. ‘Keep active' and keep well.

Are you
investing
in poor
fitness?
I sat down with a friend last week to
discuss which direction to take my
business. He is a very clued up
marketing guy. The more we
discussed how to build a solid
business with goals and strategies,
the more I thought about my clients
and how this business model could
lend itself to health and fitness.
Would you invest in a business that
showed little or no returns year
after year? It's the same with our
fitness strategies. If something is not
working for you then it has no place
in your schedule. In fairness, we have
media telling us what is hip,

at the end of the day what is your

And finally getting out there and do

go back to the top of the list. Then
fine tune each step and assess where
you may have gone wrong. And
finally if you can't seem to get it to

Noel of Total Training will be
riding his first cycling ULTRA
marathon when he takes part in the
Silverstone 24-hour ULTRA Grand
Prix in September. It’s a big
challenge as Noel, who is riding to
raise funds for Scope charity, is
normally an off road cyclist.
Competitors in the event,
(organised by the Ultra Marathon
Cycling Association - UMCA ) will
cycle through the day and night at
the prestigious, motor racing circuit,
starting from the same grid as Lewis
Hamilton and Jensen Button.
Teams of riders riding stages can
compete in the event, but Noel has
decided to go for it solo!
"It's a huge challenge. I've never
ridden at Silverstone and I've never
cycled an Ultra event before so that'll
be two ticks off my bucket list!”.
answers your pet questions
Why won't my cat sit on my lap?
The joy of cats is that they all have different personalities
and cannot be trained like dogs.
Some people would not like a cat who leapt on their lap,
especially if they were busy on the computer, or knitting. Never force her
to sit on your lap. She will only struggle and squirm to get down again.
You must gain her trust.
When you both are relaxed try bribing her with her favourite toy or cat
treats so she gets near you, and may even deign to sit next to you. Stroke
and fuss her and speak to her in a quiet voice. Be patient. Let it be her
decision to sit on your lap. If she does, don't hold her, she may jump off
within a minute or stay for a while to be stroked.
Sometimes a cat will never be a lap cat. Maybe when she gets old
and need more warmth and comfort she will start, maybe never.
It doesn't mean that she doesn't like you and she will still prove to
be an affectionate and loving companion.

Contactless cards are the newest
method of paying for low priced
items (under £20), such as morning
coffee, lunch, newspapers - even your
ticket on London’s Buses - simply by
swiping your credit or debit card
across a reader.
A logo at the top right or left of the
card will indicate you have a
contactless card and the symbol will
also be displayed in shops to indicate
they accept this payment method.
Contactless cards are simple to use
and save time. There is no need to
look for money, wait for change, go
to a cash machine, search down the
back of your sofa etc. (Though
once you start using your card
regularly, it will now and again ask
for your PIN.) All transactions
should appear immediately on your
bank statements unlike chip and pin
payments, which can take days. If the
card is lost or stolen you are 100%
protected against fraudulent activity.

However, there have been
reports that cards are being read
unintentionally, even while the
card is in a wallet or handbag and
its owner is just standing near a
reader, although card companies
claim cards cannot be read more
than 7cms from the reader.
Banks and card companies are
gradually upgrading to contactless
cards. Some companies will write
to ask if you would like one.
Others will automatically send you
a new card either when your card
expires or all customers will be
upgraded at the same time.
The trend is spreading with
5.3million transactions in March
alone totalling a whopping £39m!
More and more retailers, such as
Waitrose, Boots and Marks and
Spencers are rolling this out to all
their stores. Don’t worry if it is not

a look out for the logo.

Eye tests
crucial
E.Aves Opticians South Woodford
have joined independent opticians all
over the country to participate in a
national campaign,to highlight the
health dangers of not having regular
eye tests. The“JUL-EYE” crusade is
backed by the Association of
Optometrists
Kerk Davies of E.Aves
said he wanted to spread
the crucial message that
eye examinations, which
should be held at least
once every two years,
were about much more
than checking sight. “Eye
tests can provide vital early
warning of problems that undetected can
have potentially serious consequences, for
example diabetes, high blood pressure
and high cholesterol that could lead to
cardiovascular disease."
They are also critically important in
identifying damage caused by
exposure to the sun's ultra violet rays.
"Many people don't realise that, unless
your sunglasses provide an effective
barrier, the surface of the eye can suffer
sunburn in just the same way as the skin,
with cataracts and even blindness the
possible result.”
Children are particularly susceptible
to UV damage, said Kerk, because
their pupils were larger and their
lenses cleare than adults' - which
makes young eyes less effective as
natural filters. “Sadly, national statistics
show that one in three parents have
never had their children's eyes
examined.”
Director of the Association of
Optometrists, David Shannon,
warned that too few people realised
the importance of regular eye tests.
“Regular trips to the
optometrist are important
for vision correction but
can also mean the
difference between vision
and blindness and
sometimes life & death.”
Summertime
Bake-Off
Inspired by the BBC’s “Great British
Bake Off”, pupils and parents of
Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School
took part in a fundraising Great British Summertime Bake-Off,
judged by food writer Kate Rowe and school dignitaries.
With over 30 prizes generously donated by Delia Smith, Waitrose,
Lakeland Limited, John Lewis, Espressimo, Creative Biscuit and
the PTA, everyone was a winner.
The beautiful entries were sold-off after judging to raise funds for an
outdoor classroom for the children. A gravity-defying, five-layer cake
created by chef Keith of Espressimo cafe raised further funds and “oohs
and ahhs” from one lucky family.
During July, E.Aves Opticians will be
offering tips and advice, as well as
running an EYE-Q quiz to discover
how much South Woodford people
really know about eye health and
protection.

Report Vandalism in our Parks
...says resident Deborah Parry
Vandalism is rightly classified as an
anti-social crime and is particularly
malicious when targeted at children's
playgrounds. I live on the doorstep
of Roding Valley Park and visit it
often but am saddened by the
current state of the playground next
door to the Park on Lechmere
Avenue. When I walk past, it is
often empty of children and full of
scattered litter. The rope swing that
was installed when the playground
was refurbished three years ago has
long since been destroyed and has
not been replaced. The slide is
graffiti’d and the picnic tables have
holes burned into them. No wonder
that the playground is underused.
even less frequently.
I contacted Redbridge Council to ask
how they are tackling vandalism in
the borough? A spokesperson for
LBR said: “Vision Redbridge Culture
and Leisure Trust (VRCL) manage our
parks and open spaces on behalf of the
Council. They and the Council work
with Redbridge Community Police Team
(RCPT) to monitor crime or acts of
vandalism. in the parks. They receive
information from park users and have
teams in place to investigate and either
repair or remove equipment as
necessary.”
So it appears vital that parents are
vigilant and ensure that incidents of
vandalism are reported. Cllr Ian
Bond of Roding ward agrees:
“The single most important factor in
maintaining these facilities is having an
active and engaged group of users
(parents), to make sure it is well-used,
keep an eye on the site and quickly
report any problems or damage.”
The council claim that playground
equiptment has the potential lifespan
of 20 years, if respected. I grew up
in the borough and much of the play
equipment that I used in Clayhall
Park is still intact and is now being
enjoyed by the next generation, so I
have no doubt of the validity of the
council's claims.
Sadly, I suspect that the situation in
Roding Valley Park is not unique.
If you are unfortunate enough to
spot any incidents of vandalism in
Redbridge then please report it to
the RCPT on 07904 640042 who
will attend the site immediately.

figures only indicate reported

George Nicola, is something of
a local legend. His award-winning
fish and chips and Greek specialities
are well-known, but George’s
continuing vision for the “chippy” he
took over in 2007 offers a much
broader proposition than you might
think. For George’s takeaway
shopfront hides a hidden gem in the
form of elegant yet casual dining, too.
George’s
Place
Local food writer Kate
Rowe talks to local
restaurateur George
Nicola, of George’s
Fish & Souvlaki Bar,
about his passion for
offering first class dishes
from the authentic cuisine
of both his British and
Cypriot heritage.
I confess I had never seen the
opulent restaurant at the back of
George’s before. Accessed by way
of a sleek, well-stocked bar, the
dining room ,with its leather
banquettes and glittering chandeliers,
is equally appropriate for a cosy
dinner à deux, or a lunchtime
catch-up.
Coupled with the weatherproof
alfresco area, you can watch the
world go by or wave the world
goodbye, depending on your mood.
“My parents had fish and chip
shops but despite the long hours
my mother always found time to
cook the most delicious Greek
dishes at home.”
This statement - printed at the
bottom of the varied a la carte
menu informs George’s work ethic
and his offering. Extensive and
interesting, the menu is a showcase
of traditional Greek dishes and
honest, freshly-cooked fish.
Demetri’s Fish Bar (a tribute to
George’s father) has the daily catch of
cod and dover sole alongside exotic
delicacies like grilled octopus and king
prawns with garlic. Xenia’s Souvlaki
Bar (in honour of George’s mother)
offers souvlaki of every kind and an
eye-popping mixed grill.
The complementary menus are
testament to the respect George has
for first-rate produce (he performs
the butchery and fish-filleting personally),
and for creating unpretentious food
in “treat” surroundings. Specials are
available depending on whether
George has been on a hunting
expedition (rabbit), or a fishing trip
off the Brighton coast (black bream).
The sheer variety of traditional meze
dishes keeps children engaged by
their meal and you know what
they’re eating is fresh and wholesome because George makes his
meze from scratch. Don’t ask for
the recipes though - they are a
precious legacy from his parents and
much sought-after! ( That said, George
has generously shared his recipe for
nutritious houmous with us opposite.)
The only way to top this proposition?
A family-friendly price.
George’s special set lunches
are currently only £6.50.
In fact, there are several special
offers worth grabbing right now.
On a Tuesday evening when main
courses are offered on a “2 for 1”
basis, the place is bustling.
Equally, a Thursday night throws
in exhilarating Greek music to
accompany your meal.
Destination dining, for sure!
LUNCH MENU

The Meze Tradition
Dating back to the beginning of
recorded history, the meze tradition is
all about warm, inviting and casual
eating. It is celebrated all over
South-East Europe and the Middle East.
Meze (meh-ZEH) in its literal translation
means a taste or bite.
Used to describe small plates of
tantalising snacks, mezethes
(meh-ZEH-thes) are served as part of
a meal or as an accompaniment to
drinks. Locality influences the specialities
on offer, but houmous, like George’s
(right) is a ubiquitous favourite.

Gardening with containers
has become increasingly
popular over the last few
years - they can be used to
enliven areas of hard
landscaping, provide seasonal
change, or can provide
suitable growing
environments for plants that
might not otherwise prosper
in ordinary garden conditions
(such as Rhododendrons in
acid soil). Containers can
provide instant effect, can be
re-arranged easily and can
provide a focal point (or hide an eyesore!).
You should take care, as to where you site containers, avoid
wind tunnels (such as between buildings) and consider the
effects of radiant heat from buildings and paving, which may
help tender plants, but may also increase evaporation.
Pots can be susceptible to drying out, so should be watered
regularly, additionally water retaining gels can be added, as
well as controlled release fertilisers to aid fertility.
The feeding of container grown plants is very important,
give permanent or foliage plants a balanced feed, for
floral displays give plants a high potassium feed, such as
tomato food.
There are a variety of container materials available, before
purchasing think about the style you are looking to achieve
and what will work in your garden.Terracotta is very
popular, cheap and widely available and works well in many
gardens, but on the downside it can crack in frosty weather
and dries out faster than some other materials.
For a contemporary look, metal pots can be used, these are
often lightweight, long lasting and as they are non-porous
they retain water, however as metal readily conducts heat,
compost can quickly dry out and heat reflection from shiny
surfaces can also damage plants. There are other materials
to consider, such as wood and concrete, all of which have
various merit.
HAPPY GARDENING - Mick Lee ABL Gardeners
ON YER BIKE!
Emilie Charlesworth, the
Sustrans officer responsible
for cycle promotion in
Redbridge, tells us what's on
offer from in Woodford &
Wanstead this summer.
(Sustrans is a sustainable transport
charity)
Most journeys we make by car in
outer London are less than 4 miles
yet these journeys are the biggest
contributors to traffic congestion
and air pollution in our communities.
So choosing to cycle to the shops,
to school or to visit friends really
seems the sensible choice.
And of course summer is a great
time to think about making more of
those local journeys by bike.
When you cycle, you know exactly
how long your journey will take,
every time, you’ll be saving money
and getting some exercise all at once!
There are lots of things going on in
the South Woodford area to help
you get cycling this summer.
FREE CYCLE TRAINING
The most common reason for not
wanting to cycle is not feeling safe
on busy roads – but you don’t need
to cycle the same way that you
would drive!
At Sustrans, we provide free cycle
training to help with confidence and
we can plan a route for you that uses
quiet roads or designated cycle paths
that you may be unaware of.We can
even organise for an instructor to
ride your regular route with you
until you feel comfortable riding it
alone – all for free!
Training is available to all adults and
children living and working locally.
These lessons are ideal for cyclists
looking to improve their confidence
on the road, and for complete
beginners.
FREE BIKE SERVICING
& REPAIRS AND COURSES.
We will service your bike, repair
or replace inner tubes, pads and
cables, all for free, on the first Sunday
of every month at the Wanstead
Farmers Market between 11am and
3pm on Wanstead High Street.
You can also drop by for help with
route planning or to pick up some
local cycling maps and leaflets.
We also regularly run free bike
maintenance courses where you can
learn how to repair your own bike.
Contact emilie.charlesworth@sustrans.org.uk for bookings.

Holistic Massage with Sabine
Holistic massage treats the individual as a whole and the treatment is
tailored to the client’s needs, rather than following a ‘set routine’.
The client’s needs are ascertained through the initial consultation, here
information on the client’s medical, physical and emotional well being are
taken to make sure the individual’s requirements are met.
A massage session will normally last for one hour and oil is used upon the skin
to aid the flow of movement. All areas not being worked upon remain covered.

A resident wrot to thank us
for last issue's piece warning
about Ring Go - the card/mobile
phone method of paying for
parking and added some points of his own:
1. He had telephoned the Council Parking Dept. on three occasions when
machines were out of order. Two out of the three times his call went
unanswered. (The Council later denied this).
2.The phone numbers printed on some of the Council's local car park
signs have become very faded or are missing.
3.The P & D machines at the South Woodford Library/Health Centre car
park have, on occasion, been left broken and unrepaired for days at a time.
(We've heard this umpteen times about the Library Car Park. Get your act
together LBR Parking! Two and a half months ago, the Gazette asked the
Parking department how they know when Pay and Display machines are out of
order. We're still awaiting their reply!) Thanks for getting back to us on this
controversial topic - let's know of any other experiences. Ed.

Pure essential tea tree oil, has anti fungal properties, for those
who wish to use an alternative to conventional fungal nail
treatments, simply drop some on your nail once a day, but
always consult your GP before using any treatments.
It is also advisable if you have a diagnosed fungal nail infection,
that you dust your shoes with athletes foot powder, as this may
help to prevent reinfection
Using a swab of surgical spirit in between your toes, after
washing and drying, may also help to prevent athletes foot.

Cake Sale Record!
Michelle VanLint's 8th annual Cake Sale this June raised an amazing £1,440
for Haven House Children's Hospice - "My record to date!" she says.
"Every year I get quite anxious - what if nobody turns up? Then the day arrives
and the kind hearts of so many make it all worth while. The sun came out in the
afternoon so people were able to linger over their Pimms and lemonade. It was a
wonderful (exhausting!) day and what can I say but a MASSIVE thank you to my
friends, family, colleagues & neighbours and everyone who helped - it's great to
know that Haven House will be £1,440 better off!"

Gifts
& Loans
to Adult
Children
by Joanna Toloczko
In the current economic climate
where property prices are out of
the reach of many first time
buyers and it can be difficult for
them to obtain a mortgage, more
and more couples are relying on
financial assistance from parents
to buy a property when they
marry or start living together.
Usually, at the time the money is
advanced to the couple, everyone
is excited about the wedding
and/or new home and no-one
gives a thought to the basis on
which the money is being “given”.
Problems arise if the relationship
breaks down and the couple
decides to separate.
The parents who provided the
money may argue that the money
was a loan which must now be
repaid, not wishing the other
party (who may have treated
their child badly) to benefit
from the money.
The other party may argue that
the money was a gift, which
should be disregarded when the
equity in the property is divided
between the parties. To argue
the issue in contested court
proceedings is likely to cost each
side tens of thousands of pounds
and there is a risk that you may
not be successful.
It is much better to consider the
issues at the time the money is
advanced and to have a formal
legal document drawn up which
reflects the position.
This could be a Declaration of
Trust which sets out the basis on
which the couple hold the
property.
Or the parents could even take a
Legal Charge over the property
which sets out their financial
interest in the property and
when they are entitled to call
for their money, and works like
a second mortgage.
The cost of the preparation of
such a document is likely to be
a few hundred pounds and it
could save a lot of heartache,
uncertainty and financial loss in
the future.

Holiday
Tips
Deborah Parry
Consumers are savvier than ever
before, so it's not surprising that
many of us save money by booking
our travel and accommodation
separately, rather than choosing a
package deal. The cheapest flights,
naturally, tend to be with no frills
airlines. If you're familiar with flying
this way then you've probably
already succumbed to the dreaded
extra costs. The Office of Fair
Trading has recently cracked down
on these hidden charges but has, so
far, only succeeded in ensuing that
the airlines include their debit and
credit card fees in the ticket price.

That might seem a bit extreme but
it's worth noting the maximum
check-in charge is £105 with
Ryanair. If your printer is broken
and you don't have your boarding
pass, you will be charged up to £70,
so a quick stop off at an internet café
is what Lewis recommends.
Choose a lightweight suitcase, most
major retailers sell lighter, but not
necessarily less robust, models.
Luggage scales are fairly reasonably
priced (I spotted a few for under
£20). Rolling, rather than folding
clothes can maximise space, whilst
minimising creases. If you tend to
over pack, then it might be worth
choosing a few key items and mixing
and matching them. A basic Google
search brings up many different
fashion websites showing you how
to do this.
If you decide to check-in luggage,
remember that once you exceed
your allowance the costs mount, so it
literally pays to be organised and
efficient when packing.
Remember, if you want your budget
holiday to remain so then read the
airline's terms and conditions in
advance and maybe leave the giant
beach towel at home!
