Available through a collaboration with Ed2Go, our new online classes offer high-quality instructors, lively discussions, and plenty of practical information that you can use. May 5 North Shore Gangs, Stealing Identities and New Scams Bill Lustig, Northfield Chief of Police Bill returns to give us an update on North Shore gangs, stolen identities and new scams that seniors particularly should be aware of and how to avoid becoming a victim. Don follows up last year’s talk on melody with this inquiry into the meaning of rhythm, how it works, how it is put together and how we can listen and appreciate one of the most basic elements of music. June 2 My Life as a Meteorologist and How I Got There Steve Baskerville, CBS 2 Chicago Meteorologist Steve will trace his path toward becoming a first rate, highly rated TV meteorologist, and what it took to get there. June 9 Men’s Club Annual Picnic This is an annual event for members of the Men’s Club and their guests. There will be a fishing casting contest, golf driving contest, Bocci Ball, loads of food, prizes, and more! There is no Tuesday program today. May 12 A Life in Newspapers Rick Kogan, Senior writer & Columnist with the Chicago Tribune June 16 Rick will draw on his experience with the Chicago Daily News, Chicago Sun Times and the Chicago Tribune, and his many columns to tell a story about his life in journalism and specifically in newspapers. May 19 Using Religion to Discriminate Bertha Benz & The History of the German Automobile Anette Isaacs, German historian Annette returns once again to relate another exciting story, this time about an extraordinary woman and the birth and ensuing success of one of the finest automobiles in the world. June 23 Colleen Connell, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois Springfield Update Colleen will speak on a new topic gaining increasing importance to civil liberties in Illinois and across the country: the use of religion to discriminate in the provision of health care and other services, and what it means for end of life care, reproductive rights, and LGBT rights. July 14 The Dulles Brothers Larry Stern, Historian and Lecturer Larry reviews Stephen Kinzers book entitled “The Brothers”, about Allen, Director of the CIA, and John Foster, Secretary of State…both serving simultaneously for President Eisenhower’s 8 years in office. July 21 Kent returns to describe the dire situation facing the coral reefs and the disappearance of aquatic species that depend on the reefs for their survival; the role of human behavior in the disappearance of the coral reefs will also be explored. August 11 The Boat Race of the Season: The Mac Matt Gallagher, Chairman Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Matthew will give us a picture of the preparation for the 107th running of Race to Mackinac which started July 19. This is considered by many to be the race of the season, a destination like no other and the adventure of a lifetime. August 18 Funniest Comedians of Movies, Radio, Vaudeville and TV Larry Bergnach, Humorist and Entertainer The Kennedys: A Sailboat and the Sea Jim Graham, Author, sailboat racer and cruiser. Jim shares his fresh perspective on the Kennedy family, tracking their story from 1932 to the present. He explores what the boat (Victura) taught 3 generations of Kennedys about family, determination, winning, and dealing with tragedies. Larry returns to bring smiles and laughter of the comedians of yesteryear…the likes of Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Berle, Benny, Groucho, Skelton, Gleason, Caesar, Imogene Coca, Martin and Lewis and so many more. August 25 Behind the Domestic Violence Headlines July 28 Vicky Dinges, Senior Vice President Corporate Relations for Allstate Stories of Athletes Learn about the causes of domestic violence and a proven way to help end the cycle of abuse that touches too many public and private lives, including people you likely know. Everyone deserves to live free from domestic violence, yet one in four women will experience it in their lifetime. And financial abuse occurs in 98% of all cases. Steve Isaacson Member of the United States Table Tennis Hall of Fame Steve will discuss several famous and not-so-famous sports figures. His connection with athletes goes way beyond his own field. Mark began playing the organ at age four, three years later he gave his first piano concert, and he has continued playing and concertizing ever since. Truly a product of the North Shore, Mark was born in Northfield, now resides in Northbrook and served three terms as its mayor. Each year, at his own expense, Mark travels abroad to give concerts, and this year will play in 17 countries during his 37 day tour. We will begin at the Oriental Museum which is a showcase for the history, art, and archaeology of the ancient Near East. The University has supported research and excavations there since 1919. The Wildlife Discovery Center is a living natural history museum and provides a great opportunity to explore nature and learn more about conservation efforts. You will view some of the center’s resident animals such as hawks, venomous snakes, and bobcats. Then a naturalist will take you on a nature hike along the Middlefork trail which goes through the Middlefork Savanna, a threatened ecosystem! This is a co-ed group for seniors who are less independent because they no longer drive or have physical restrictions, but may benefit from interaction with their peers. The program enriches the lives of its participants by enlisting their help in service projects for the Center, and participating in Sit and Get Fit exercise to help maintain flexibility and full range of motion. Photography Club For those at all skill levels who have a mutual love of photography. The group meets on the second and fourth Friday of each month for constructive feedback on each other’s work, idea sharing, and tips on how to capture the best possible image so that less time will be required for editing. She was friends with the radical French Impressionists, although she could not join them at the the intense cafe discussions as a proper lady. Cassatt, who never married, painted touching images of mothers and children. Enjoy her daring Impressionist canvases, her pastels and beautiful prints. Isaiah Berlin applied pluralism of values to a “muddled and complex” world. John Rawls approached injustice and inequality by asking that social contracts be based on fairness by setting aside personal identity and assuming a position not qualified by color, wealth, ability, or social position. Finally, Peter Singer, the pioneer of public awareness, provided impetus to animal rights and our moral obligations to animals. Registration is required for participation in all programs, with the only exception of Men’s Club and Duplicate Bridge. Payment is due at the time of registration. Registrations are nontransferable. Participants are encouraged to register early, as programs with insufficient registration will be cancelled three to five business days before the scheduled start date. How to register Mail a completed registration form with payment to North Shore Senior Center. One form for each individual registering Online at www.nssc.org Telephone Lifelong Learning at 847.784.6030 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Walk in to register in Lifelong Learning from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Wait Lists When a class reaches its maximum limit, a Wait List is started. If there is a cancellation and a vacancy becomes available, calls will be placed to those on the Wait List in the order in which they were received. On the day of the program, walkins will not be admitted to the program if there is a Wait List. Maximum enrollments are based on total building and parking lot capacity, not room capacity. Confirmations Confirmation receipts are sent once the registration form is processed. 847.784.6030 • www.nssc.org Standards of Behavior In order to provide a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment, North Shore Senior Center has adopted Standards of Behavior, available in Lifelong Learning or online. Cancellation Policy Programs or Daytrips cancelled by North Shore Senior Center due to low enrollment, inclement weather, or other conditions will be refunded automatically and in full. You will be issued an electronic voucher unless you notify Lifelong Learning that you would like your money back. Refund Policy You may cancel your registration in a class, workshop, or event prior to the program’s start date and request a refund. An electronic voucher will be issued for the full registration amount. If you prefer to receive your money back, the registration fee minus a $5 processing fee will be issued. North Shore Senior Center cannot refund fees requested on or after start date of a program, or for sessions missed due to personal illness or other personal situations. Daytrip Refund Policy Request for refund when cancelling a daytrip registration must be done 6 weeks prior to the day of the trip. A full refund in the form of an electronic voucher will be issued. If you prefer to receive your money back, a refund minus a $10 processing fee will be issued. North Shore Senior Center cannot issue refunds for requests made after 6 weeks prior, unless your spot is filled by another registration.
