With a B.S.N. from Niagara University’s College of Nursing and an M.A. in
child and adolescent psychiatric mental health nursing from New York University,
Ballard currently holds an adjunct faculty position at New York University,
teaching health policy in the College of Nursing’s graduate program.
Ballard has held both administrative and clinical positions in pediatric and child
psychiatric nursing, working primarily with children and their families coping
with chronic and terminal illnesses. She has been a consultant for the Nurses
Workgroup for Health Care Without Harm, an environmental advocacy group.
Ballard has served as a member and chair of the American Nurses Association’s
Standards and Guidelines Committee, vice chairperson of ANA’s Congress on
Nursing Practice and Economics, ANA’s first vice president (2010–2012) and is
a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
Ballard has authored over 40 articles on various nursing, healthcare and
environmental topics. She is the co-author of Psychiatric Nursing: An Integration
of Theory and Practice and is contributing editor of the American Journal of
Nursing’s quarterly column ”Environments and Health.”​
