We will be having pizza, salad, dessert and ice cream at our
February meeting to celebrate Valentines Day and to raise
funds for Alzheimer’s. A $5.00 admission fee will be charged.
Please make every effort to attend!
It seems like the new year has gotten off to a bit of a rocky start! Due to inclement weather we
had to cancel our general membership meeting. I am sorry that we were unable to meet in
January so that we could all exchange good wishes for the New Year, but the frigid weather and
dangerous road conditions made it impossible. I hope that everyone has been keeping warm and
safe during the onslaught of the “polar vortex”!
So much for global warming…it seems more
like the Ice Age to me.
On January 31st I attended the Winter Charity Ball at the Chateau Briand. It was a beautiful
affair honoring six outstanding individuals. The Special Honoree for the evening was the newly
elected National President of the Order, Anthony J. Baratta of Chicago, Illinois. He was recognized for his dedication and service to the Order. It was a pleasure meeting our new National
President. An honoree you may recognize is News 12 Long Island reporter Antoinette Biordi. She
is an Emmy Award winning reporter and an Italian-American woman of distinction. Also recognized were the Iavarone brothers, Pat, John and Joseph. They are successful businessmen whose
company Iavarone Brothers is one of the largest specialty food companies in the New York area.
Aside from their success in the business world, they are dedicated to giving back to their community through philanthropy. Some of beneficiaries of their charitable works have been schools,
libraries, scholarship recipients and numerous charitable organizations. Additionally, USMC Cpl.
Manuel Ocia Jimenez received a Special Courage and Patriotism Award. He was severely wounded while serving in Afghanistan and has been working with “Team Hope for the Warriors”.
I
was very happy to represent our Lodge at this wonderful event.
Hopefully, February will be kinder to us and we will be able to meet on February 18th at Gries
Park. We will be holding a mini-fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Disease. We are planning to have a
light supper and raffles. I look forward to seeing everyone!
I wish you all a very happy
Valentine’s Day. It’s such a nice day to let all those close to you know that you care.
Also, scholarship applications for a member’s child or grandchild graduating high school and
entering college are available. See Theresa Palmese if you have a child you would like to submit
for a scholarship.

The council and I have been planning the new calendar of events and
look forward to spending the coming year enjoying each other’s
company while working to support the charities that depend on people like us to help them help others.
Please remember that if you have a happy event in your life we
would love to know about it and share in your joy. Or if you know of
a sister who is ill, having an operation or has suffered a loss we
would also like to know about it so that we can offer our support.
Please contact our Sunshine Chairperson Vera D’Arrigo and let her
know.

ITALIAN HERITAGE & CULTURE CORNER
Marche
Le Marche, The Marches in English, is mostly an agricultural
region and is surprisingly very green. Le Marche is situated
in the centre-north of Italy on the Adriatic coast.
The main capital of Le Marche is Ancona, a city with the feel
of a ubiquitous busy mediteranean Port. it is also one of
Italy’s principal ferry ports with boats to Croatia, Greece and
Turkey.
The food culture of Marche has been greatly influenced by
other regions and invading peoples throughout its long history, but many farmers cling to local tradition, governing
their crops by ancient lunar methods. On the coast, fish and
seafood dishes abound. In the hills, chicken and pork are the
primary proteins. Creamy sauces made from chicken giblets
are used liberally in Marche cooking. Pork recipes rely on
generous chunks instead of the traditional thin prosciutto
style servings. Since pork is so readily available, there are
many type of sausages made in Marche. A hearty favorite
local smoked sausage is ciauscolo, crafted with half pork
and half pork fat, and well seasoned with salt, pepper,
orange peel and fennel seed. Olives grow well in Marche,
and are served both on their own and stuffed with savory
meat fillings. Grapes, grains, mushrooms and a wide variety
of vegetables are found throughout the region, and the
tables are graced with simple country Italian cooking at its
best
The people of Le Marche have made themselves known and
remembered both in Italy and all over the world. A land of
saints such as Maria Goretti who was born in Corinaldo in
1890, who came from a humble family forced to emigrate to
Agro pontino. It was in Nettuno (a town near Rome) that
Maria, just 12 years old, was raped and killed by a young
boy. Her sacrifice was recognized by the Church who in
1950 made her a saint.
It was also a lady from Le Marche who revolutionized the
children’s education system, pedagogics specialist Maria
Montessori, who was born in Chiaravalle in 1870. She supported how children should be protagonist of growth.
Another woman known all over the world but originally
from Ancona, is the actress Virna Lisi who worked with the
best directors and alongside brilliant actors such as Alain
Delon and Jack Lemmon. The great Raffaello was born in
Urbino and is celebrated everywhere as a painter of exceptional sensitivity capable of influencing new Italian art
courses of the Renaissance.
One of the most well known Marchigiani in the world today
is MotoGP motorcycle champion Valentino Rossi who hails
from Tavullia in the province of Pesaro. A charismatic personality and motorcycling genius he's a national hero in Italy
and has been a huge ambassador for the sport.
next month ... Molise
information on the regions of Italy have been taken from various websites off the internet.
A SPECIAL RECIPE FROM THE PROVINCE OF MARCHE
BRAISED ESCAROLE AND PANCETTA RECIPE
Serves 4
1 head of escarole
5-6 thin slices of pancetta or guanciale, prosciutto, speck
half a glass of white wine
2 cloves of garlic
couple of stems of thyme - leave in tact & no need to chop (it
makes it easier to remove)
Start by cleaning the escarole. Cut it into six wedges, leaving
the core intact. With a piece of kitchen twine, tie the wedges
into bundles to prevent them from separating.
In a pan, lightly brown 2 cloves of garlic in a few tablespoons
of olive oil. Raise the heat, add the escarole and a crack of
salt and pepper. Cook for a couple of minutes until the
greens begins to wilt. Then give everything a turn. Add in the
thyme sprigs and lay the slices of pancetta over the top. In
goes the white wine. Cover with parchment paper, lower the
heat and allow to braise on the stove top or in a 350/175
degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until the escarole is tender.
To serve, cut off the twine, remove the thyme and cloves of
garlic and discard (unless you love them).
STATE $100 RAFFLE TICKETS
