University, Wexner Medical Center
This talk will convey an overview of the basic steps in sample
preparation and analysis for next-generation sequencing of genomic DNA, especially as applicable to clinical oncology. A discussion of select cases will demonstrate important pre-analytic and
analytic considerations, highlighting both the promise of this exciting technology and its limitations.

and the therapy designed to treat; the importance of proper procurement fixation of tissue for molecular studies and the need for
team approach in treating lung cancer patients.

Proposition, Challenges and Future Directions.”
1 CMLE Limited to 40
Anil Parwani, M.D., PhD, MBA, Division Director, Pathology Informatics, Professor of Pathology and Biomedical Informatics
Shadyside Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre
Whole slide imaging (WSI) and digital pathology continues to
evolve at a rapid pace, mostly driven by developments in technology. Advances in computer processing power, data transfer speeds,
advances in software, and cloud storage solutions have enabled
the use of digital images for a wide variety of purposes in pathology. As a result, pathology departments as well as histology laboratories have begun utilizing digital imaging for simple tasks (e.g.
image archiving) and more complex undertakings (e.g. telepathology, image analysis). The objective of this talk is to provide an overview of current applications, capabilities and limitations of WSI and
review some of the challenges and barriers to adoption of WSI.

in billing surgical pathology specimens. Monitoring the billing process, and Quality statistics that might be beneficial will also be
discussed .
“CPT Coding Basics in Surgical Pathology ”
Debra Zynger, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pathology
Director, Division of Genitourinary Pathology, The Ohio State
University, Wexner Medical Center, Department of Pathology
As healthcare professionals are being asked to do more and more,
with ever-shrinking budgets, it is particularly important that we bill
all of our services accurately. The aim is to bill for every penny that
we can, without ever overbilling for a service. This talk will take a
look at surgical pathology specimens and how to deal with “gray
areas” .

Jean Mitchell, BS, HT (ASCP) – NSH Region IV Director, Newcomer Supply, Inc., Technical Support
Teaching histology related topics in different parts of the world
has been enriching and inspiring, while at the same time an
exhausting and overwhelming privilege. This is my experience
of a 10-day African histology mission in Gaborone, Botswana,
compared and contrasted with time spent in the histology laboratory at the San Juan de Dios hospital in San José, Costa Rica.
