Our Mission Statement We are the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows Saint Anthony, a Roman Catholic Community; as one Eucharistic Family, we are Christ-centered and Spirit-led. Children of God our Father, we are united by His Love and sustained by the intercession of Our Lady and Saint Anthony. We give witness to our faith in action. 2 From the Pastor’s Desk Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Dear Parishioners, Happy Pentecost! Happy Birthday! The fifty days of the Easter Season comes to its joyous conclusion with today’s Solemnity of Pentecost. (from the Greek word Pentekoste, “fiftieth’) It has its roots in the Jewish feast of weeks (Shavuot) that closed the period of seven weeks begun at Passover. The Jewish emphasis was on harvest and first fruits, and celebrated the revelation of the Torah to Moses on Mt. Sinai. The Church kept this feast as a celebration of thanksgiving and rejoicing in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples (Acts 2:1-41); it is seen as the “Birthday of the Church.” How grateful we should be for the gift of the Holy Spirit that dwells within the Church, making her One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic! St. Augustine tells us “What the soul is to the human body, the Holy Spirit is to the Body of Christ, which is the Church.” St. Irenaeus affirms that where the Church is, “there also is God’s Spirit—and every grace.” It is the Holy Spirit who illumines and sustains us on the journey of faith. Most of us experience the Church within our own parish community and so we pray today that the Holy Spirit will deepen within us a love of the Church Universal and indeed for our own parish. May our parish be, in the words of Pope Francis, “a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey.” What do visitors witness or experience when they enter our parish church? Do we help our church to be a reflection of the holiness of God? Does it give all who enter a sense that the Holy Spirit is at work here? Our bulletin has a few verses that form a welcome invitation to a parish church. May it reflect our sentiments and desire as a parish. With affection, Msgr. Gervasio Frè-m ak Sè-m yo, Bòn Fèt Lapannkòt! Bòn Anivèsè! 50 jou apré Fèt Pak la rive nan yon konklizyon kèkontan avèk selebrasyon solanèl Fèt Lapannkòt jodia (Pentekoste: ki vle di 50e). Se pou pawas nou an tounen, dapre Pap Francois, "yon sangtyè kote moun ki swaf va vinn bwè pandan y'ap vwayaje". Ki sa vizitè yo wè lè yo antre nan Legliz la? Eske nou ede pou Legliz la vinn yon refleksyon de sentete Bondye? Eske nou bay tout moun ki rantre nan Legliz la yon sans ke LespriSen an abite nan Li? Nan bilten an, n'ap jwenn anpil vèsè k'ap sèvi pou nou kapab akeyi moun nan Legliz la. Kòm yon pawas, se pou vèsè sa yo reflete santiman nou ak dezi nou! Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. It has been active in promoting a number of initiatives to strengthen our parish family. Last week, the council welcomed four new members with the “retirement” of those who have completed their term of service. How grateful we should be to have parishioners willing to devote time and energy to helping to develop our pastoral life. We offer our thanks to the following members who have served so generously and completed their terms: David Uhaze Mike Schulz Robert Marino June Meeting and Dinner (Monday, June 1) Our last meeting of the season will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Church Meeting Room. With Gratitude & Best Wishes Sr. Dorothy Lettiere, R.S.M. Since 2005, our Religious Education Program has had the benefit of the wit, wisdom, and gentleness of Sister Dorothy Lettiere, R.S.M. During these years of being a faithful and loving caregiver to her dear mother, Sister Dorothy has kept her hand in the catechetical ministry of the Church by teaching our 7th and 8th graders preparing for Confirmation. She has also given presentations to our parents whose children were to receive their First Holy Communion as well as Confirmation. How blessed we have been to have this very popular and exemplary religious as part of our program. Sr. Dorothy traces her roots to St. Anthony’s Parish whose pastor, the indefatigable Monsignor Michael McCorristin, encouraged her to be a missionary. Sister Dorothy responded with generosity as a member of the Sisters of Mercy in Guam. On May 18, Sister Dorothy will return to Guam to continue to minister to the people she loves and who love her. Thank you Sister Dorothy! We shall miss you! May the Lord make fruitful your labors for the glory of God and salvation of souls. Your Parish School News We sure had fun sharing our adventures of Flat Jesus with you last week! Why not become a part of the fun that we are having? We gave each of the children a cutout of a flat Jesus to carry with them. It acted as a reminder that Jesus is always with us, even when we may forget. The paper cutout made the concept real for them, and their lively pictures made for a wonderful sharing event for everyone. Stop by to visit your parish school. The posters hang along the halls and they are so much fun to see! Each time I look at them, I discover something new. Now comes the fun part when you really get involved! You know that you have Jesus with you wherever you go, why not share it with the children? Taking a bus trip to Atlantic City soon, Jesus will be with you. Off to the beach for a week this summer? Let us know that Jesus was with you. Visiting a friend for a few days? Inform the school that Jesus was with you. Each of us in the parish is the best teacher for our children, for we are theirmodels. Just take a moment to mail a postcard to the school from wherever you visit. Simply say, "Hi, Our Lady of Sorrows School. I'm in _____, and Jesus is with me!" Believe me the children will love your postcards. Be sure to add your name. Keep them coming, for we plan to hang each of them in our main entrance hall. Each morning, we will announce the cards that we receive. See we never really "Age Out" of school! We can still have fun learning and sharing. Mail your postcards to: Sanctuary Lamps At Our Lady of Sorrows A lamp burns in loving memory of Trudy Perferi Requested by Carmela At Saint Anthony A lamp burns in loving memory of Theresa DiFranco Requested by husband Pasquale Welcome A hearty welcome is extended to the following new parishioners and their families: Matthew J. Dempsey Donna & Paul Evans Desiree & Andrew Mancuso Seniors’ Activities Senior Club #1 The End-of-Season luncheon will take the place of our regular June 10 meeting. Payment is not due until September 9. Reservations can be made by calling Nora Fragale at 838-0043. Our Lady of Sorrows School 3800 E. State Street Ext. Hamilton Twp, NJ 08619 Each morning a student leads us in morning prayers. We keep you, our wonderful parishioners, in our prayers. Add an extra punch and send us a postcard. PS-(Shh, the children don't know it yet, but the entire school is going to be involved. Before they leave for the summer, they are copying the school address to mail their own postcards to say, "Hi, Our Lady of Sorrows. I'm in _______, and Jesus is with me!" Now if you think you might need a Flat Jesus of your own, it is easy. Draw your own, and put it into your wallet for a reminder, or stop by school. We'll be glad to give you one of your own! Senior Club #2 Next meetings: Tues, June 2 & 16 1:00 p.m.; Church Meeting Room There will be changes for future Atlantic City trips. Information will be announced soon. Please call Doreen (706-6169) if interested in going on the trips. Our Seniors Clubs welcome new members! This is a tricky tray style event and through the generous donations of our school families, parishioners, and the community at large, we were able to assemble more than 230 gift baskets to raffle off last year. All proceeds from this event benefit the students of Our Lady of Sorrows School. We are in need of your help once again! Have you come across items in your closet that you purchased for gifts but never gave out? Did you get a gift that you wanted to exchange but never got back to the store? Why not donate it to our event? We are looking for new and unused items as well as baskets or containers (i.e., hat boxes, photo boxes, totes, etc.) to help create these wonderful gift baskets once again. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event we cannot accept clothing or “gently used” items. Donations can be dropped off at school’s main office between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Simply label the donation “KTR.” Please do not drop off donations at the Parish Office. If you have a question or would like further information, please contact Liz Landi (631-8033 or elandicsr@msn.com). This week I will be sharing the first two components of the Faith to Move Mountains Campaign for the Diocese and our parish. 1) Catechesis and Evangelization: In order to effectively raise our children in the Catholic faith in all of the parishes across our four-county Diocese, the Diocese of Trenton will create an endowment fund that will support and expand our Catechesis and Evangelization programs in the following ways: Catechists and Catechetical Leaders: Currently, only 30% of catechists have participated in the Diocesan catechetical certificate program. Funds from the campaign will provide full certification for all of our catechists and expand educational advancement for parish catechetical leaders so that all serving in this role will have or be pursuing a master’s degree in theology or religious education. Parish Adult Faith Formation: Additional funds will be directed toward the organized training of adult formation teams, strengthening existing programs, or creating new ones at each parish. New Evangelization: The Diocese intends to build a comprehensive network that incorporates the best of parish evangelization ministries in order to empower every parish community across the Diocese to deepen the spiritual lives of its people, reach out to those who have left the Church, and invite and prepare all those who are coming to the faith for the first time. 2) Parishes: 30% of the funds raised will remain with the parishes to address their own local needs (you will be hearing about OLS-SA’s parish needs in the coming weeks). In addition to the 30% share, the Diocese will also create the following endowment fund: Diocesan Parish Assistance Fund: Over the past ten years, the Diocese has provided financial support to 40% of all parishes that have been unable to fund their parish and school employee healthcare, pensions, retirement, and other costs. This endowment will ensure that these and other vital resources will continue to be available for any parishes in need of immediate assistance in order to effectively serve their parish communities for years to come. In the coming weeks, I will share further details about how the campaign funds will directly impact both our Diocese and our community here at OLS-SA. Everyone will soon be invited to participate in this graced effort. In the meantime, anyone is welcome to approach me before or after Mass with any questions you may have. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. Grace, peace, and blessings to you! Monsignor Thomas Gervasio 10 Come Celebrate a Special Anniversary Liturgy for Married Couples If we love each other, God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full expression through us. 1 John 4:12 In his book, Loving for a Lifetime, Richard Johnson, PhD, explains that sacred unity flows from togetherness as we more fully understand that the love relationship between marriage partners is a reflection of the love relationship between Jesus and all the children of God. On June 6, there will be a special liturgy at the 5:00 p.m. Mass to honor the sacrament of marriage for couples who are celebrating anniversaries of 1 year, multiples of 5 years, or more than 50 years, during 2015. Following will be a Wine and Cheese Reception for the married couples participating in this liturgy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------All married couples wishing to attend this liturgy, please complete the information below and drop the form off at the rectory office or email the information to dohrenwe@optonline.net by Friday, May 29. Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony will host the meal on Saturday, June 27. We will be serving dinner for more than 600 guests. OLS School PTA will provide the supplies for bagged lunches, which we will be assembling on Friday, June 26, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Volunteers are needed for this event. We REALLY need volunteers to serve at the Cathedral on Saturday! Can you spare just a few hours out of one day to serve Jesus? There are several ways you can help. You can work “behind the scenes” in the kitchen or serve the guests directly, and several time slots are available: 10 helpers to serve bagels and coffee at St. Mary’s from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. 10 helpers to prepare the meal and work in the kitchen from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 30 helpers to serve the dinner guests from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 5 helpers to serve at the second station in the cafeteria from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 6 helpers to prep the dessert from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 10 helpers to clean the kitchen from noon to 1:30 p.m. 10 helpers to clean the cafeteria and fold the tables from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Does your child need service hours? This is a great way to earn them! Is transportation an issue for you? Car pooling for adults is available. To volunteer or to arrange transportation, contact Cheryl Uhaze (588-0890 or cuhaze@optonline.net). 12 13 Watering flowers keeps them alive. A blood donation keeps a child alive.
