What training courses or groups have best prepared you to become an effective and powerful Elder? I mean Elder as differentiated from the terms adult, old and aged. Elder, in the sense that for untold thousands of generations, humans lived a three-stage life ― Child, Adult and Elder. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution, a mere eightgenerational blink of the evolutionary eye, we have lost the Elder stage, source of cultural wisdom. My thesis is that our species has devolved into a two-stage life as all other mammals, no longer being differentiated by our unique Elder stage. This third stage – Elder -was our evolutionary ‘edge’, as important as the opposable thumb or the neocortex. The re-invention of Elder seems critical for humanity’s future. With loss of the three-generational family, we have also lost the basic training ground of Elder. However there are large numbers of Elders who, lacking that family training, have trained themselves or received wisdom-training in other groups. As an Elder, what groups have best prepared you? Response must be tight, clear and specific, 250 words or less. Email me at HarveyWAustin@Yahoo.com. I will acknowledge receipt. The book’s working title is “Become an Elder Instead of Just...Getting...Old: An Instruction Manual”. My intent, but not promise, is to use what you send, unedited, edited, or summarized. Core Ideas In Neuroscience (e-book). This book is for everyone who needs to be informed by neuroscience but doesn't want to invest a huge commitment to learn. It's a small book that gives the big picture, with emphasis on 75 big ideas, not minutia. A given idea is completely covered in about four to 8 on-screen pages. Principles of neuroscience are explained in easily understood, concise summaries. Each module features a concise statement of the core idea, definition of relevant terms, explanation of the core idea, examples, links to related core ideas, general references, and classic references. Illustrations and examples aid in understanding the material. Study questions are also included in each chapter. Traditional textbooks are too big, too detailed, too indigestible, and too expensive. Historical Fiction Available For Review The C Enigma By Spiros Gratsias ISBN: 978-1499625608 ASIN: B00MIWE734 Published: August 2014 Pages: 312 Genre: Historical Fiction A particular brand of evil has reared its ugly head at certain points throughout history, and humanity must fight to keep it in check. This balance is sometimes managed on the scale of world wars, but it can also come down to an individual’s actions. The C ENIGMA explores the premise that one man’s courage can influence the outcome of a war on evil as large and powerful as Hitler’s Nazism. Chance—or perhaps fate—leads Matthias Adkins up to his grandfather’s attic, where he discovers a hidden picture of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, the head of the German secret service during WWII. A few other items reveal that his grandfather has left him a set of riddles that will lead him through three time periods—1945, 1988, and 2008—on a hunt for his family’s identity and his own destiny…which turns out to be a destiny beyond his wildest dreams. Please find details of my Award winning historical mystery novel “Baudelaire’s Revenge” for review. Many thanks and regards Bob Van Laerhoven – Belgium “Baudelaire’s Revenge” – English translation of “De wraak van Baudelaire,” winner of the Hercule Poirot Prize for best mystery novel of the year in Belgium It is 1870, and Paris is in turmoil. As the social and political turbulence of the Franco-Prussian War roils the city, workers starve to death while aristocrats seek refuge in orgies and séances. The Parisians are trapped like rats in their beautiful city but a series of gruesome murders captures their fascination and distracts them from the realities of war. The killer leaves lines from the recently deceased Charles Baudelaire’s controversial anthology Les Fleurs du Mal on each corpse, written in the poet’s exact handwriting. Commissioner Lefevre, a lover of poetry and a veteran of the Algerian war, is on the case, and his investigation is a thrilling, intoxicating journey into the sinister side of human nature, bringing to mind the brooding and tense atmosphere of Patrick Susskind’s Perfume. The plot dramatically appears to extend as far as the court of the Emperor Napoleon III. A vivid, intelligent, and intense historical crime novel that offers up some shocking revelations about sexual mores in 19th century France, this superb mystery illuminates the shadow life of one of the greatest names in poetry. Question Authority to Think for Yourself Beverly A. Potter, PhD RONIN Publishing, Fall 2012 Isbn: 978-1-57951-162-3 $14.95; 200 pg Thinking for yourself is not so easy. When encountering an argument to a long held opinion or a wild idea, we use critical thinking, as we were taught to do in school. The problem is that critical thinking is critical, focusing our thinking on the negative— what doesn’t work, what’s wrong with the idea—and encourages my-side thinking where we evaluate evidence in a way that favors our beliefs and entraps us into closed-mindedness. Thinking for yourself requires open-mindedness. Thinking is not driven by answers but by questions. To think, you must question. To think through or rethink anything, one must ask questions that stimulate thought. The quality of your questions determines the quality of your thinking. Our own opinions is one authority we should frequently question. Times change. We change. Perspectives and values change. Book explores how opinions and values we held in the past need periodic evaluation and challenge. Independent thinkers evolve and need to shed the shackles of old views and opinions. If you’ve bitten your tongue and later wished you’d spoken up and not been 14 cowed into silence by a mocking co-worker when you revealed a “politically incorrect” viewpoint, you’ll find much of interest in Question Authority; Think for Yourself . Mark j Estren, PhD RONIN Publishing Pub 2013 978-1-57951-166-1 $16.95, 150 pp Do you or a loved one use statins—the most-prescribed drugs in the nation? Many believe they are miracle medicines because they change the balance of good and bad cholesterol in ways favorable to health. They can even be beneficial for people without a history of high cholesterol or cardiac disease. On the downside, STATINS: MIRACULOUS OR MISGUIDED? reveals that almost everything people think they know about statins is wrong. We’ve been told that problematic cholesterol comes from eating rich foods when actually the body makes it. Statins work by interfering with the body’s ability to manufacture cholesterol, which is its “miracle”. Unfortunately, statins also have side effects, including muscle pain, digestive problems and potential liver damage. Research suggests that statins increase the risk of diabetes and are implicated in generalized fatigue. STATINS: MIRACULOUS OR MISGUIDED? explains the risks in clear, jargon-free language, tells danger signs—such as forgetfulness, confusion, excessive thirst or urination, muscles aches and symptoms of liver damage—and explains how to address such symptoms with your doctor. STATINS: MIRACULOUS OR MISGUIDED? describes alternative approaches used by naturopathic practitioners, which may include substituting red yeast rice extract or plant sterols for a statin, eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as wild salmon, and avoiding trans fatty acids such as are found in deep-fried foods, snacks, and some bakery products. 15 STATINS: MIRACULOUS OR MISGUIDED? is an easy-to-understand explanation—for patients and doctors alike—of the pluses and minuses of statins, and essential reading for anyone taking these drugs. It is a wonderful gift for a friend or loved one using statins. Book on Stress and Hormones Available For Review Healing Hormones: How To Turn On Natural Chemicals to Reduce Stress By Mark J Estren, PhD & Beverly A Potter, Phd Publisher: Ronin Publishing ISBN: 978-1579511678 ASIN: B00G1SRC2Y Genre: Wellness Formats Available For Review: Print (only available to qualified reviewers/bloggers) or pdf Feeling stressed? Overwhelmed? About to jump out of your skin from pressures of everyday life? We all feel that way at times: ready to explode from everything going on—unrelenting demands, all the time. So we take medicines, see doctors, overeat, even use alcohol or drugs. Still the pressures mount. It’s unbearable! There must be a better way! There is. Your body knows what to do. Your body makes healing hormones that fight stress, promoting calm and balance. Nitric oxide, dopamine, endorphins, serotonin and oxytocin will help you cope with the demands of living in our hectic modern world—if you let your body do its job! Healing Hormones shows what you can do to help yourself without pills or supplements. It shows that stress is not what most people think—not something “out there.” Stress is a response to external events—positive or negative. Since stress is your reaction, you can learn to control runaway stress by encouraging your body to produce anti-stress chemicals that will keep you calmer and better balanced. Healing Hormones shows how we create stress by reacting to what we think is happening around us—not what is really happening. We make our own reality— one much more stress-filled than it has to be. Since we make it, we can change it. 17 Healing Hormones tells how. A wonderful counterbalance to the pressures urging us to take more medicines and look outside ourselves for health, Healing Hormones explains how you can be healthier and happier—today and every day. Women's Memoir on Marriage and Christianity Available For Review In His Way By Rebecca Duvall Published: August 2014 ISBN: 978-1499280401 ASIN: B00MO01VIE Genre: Memoir, Women, Christianity Formats Available For Review: print (only available to qualified reviewers/bloggers), kindle Book Description: Throughout much of my married life, I lived under the illusion that I had it all together - it was everyone else that needed fixing. Several years into my second marriage my husband, a Deputy Sheriff, became a workaholic and was never home. Meanwhile, I became a volunteeraholic, too busy to face the fact that we had become two strangers under one roof, raising three kids. God revealed Himself to me through the different women I volunteered with. As my heart slowly opened to God's presence, my marriage came crashing down around me. As I cried out for God's help, I discovered my husband’s affair. I found myself surrounded by faithful people who gave me the strength to face the problems in my marriage and the tools needed to begin fixing it. Over the next four years, my husband’s health deteriorated and he was forced to retire. Through this God continually showed me I was In His Way and then, when He knew He had my attention, He would proceed to show me how to do things In His Way. In the end, what God told me to do, saved my husband’s life, and our marriage. What was broken is now fixed by the grace and love of God. But over the decades the ordinary progress of life seemed to get in the way of that dream. As an adult, he found himself working as an upholsterer; he maintained a successful business for a few years, but, despite the name he’d made for himself and how far he’d come, something was missing from his life, and he knew exactly what it was. He just had to figure out how to get it. Brett didn’t know anything about the process of becoming a police officer or about policing itself. He didn’t know any cops. But he did know that he wanted to be one, and that he’d do whatever it took. It was ten years ago that Brett came to this critical decision in his life, and, within a short period of time, he realized his dream and became an active member of an Ontario, Canada, police force. My Road to the Badge is the story of how he got where he is today and the incredible insights, experiences, and information he collected along the way. Jared didn't want to do it, but it had to be done. Someone had to sit before the government hearing to explain why a gay man was nothing to be vilified, nothing to be hated or feared... that he was just a man. That is what Jared Montgomery is determined to do. He does so by sharing his story -- his and Luke's story -- in the hopes that perhaps even just one more person could understand. Luke and Jared were battling the odds from the beginning. Growing up beside each other, being best friends, they soon learned that if they wanted to share each other's company, it had to be done in secret, in the confines of the old train car behind the junkyard. There, they were free of the taunts and jibes, the ridicule and hatred... or were they? Unable to embrace who he is, unable to deal with the tactics used by his family to 'cure' him, Luke forces himself into a traditional marriage that is doomed from the start. His true, self-denied love for Jared, and the hatred surrounding it, is killing him. The question is, can Jared get to him before it is too late? Sheila Tayebi On behalf Open Court Publishing stayebi@360pr.com About the Book: The Occupy Movement Explained- From Corporate Control to Democracy A readable, compact account and analysis of the Occupy protests, The Occupy Movement Explained is thoroughly researched, painstakingly accurate, and fully documented. Debunking a number of prominent myths and misunderstandings, Nicholas Smaligo shows how the movement arose out of radical currents that have been active below the media's radar since the 1970s. Occupiers are not all the same, and the author reviews some of the debates and changes within the movement. The occupations began under a slogan that conjured up a naive sense of unity — "We Are the 99%!" It did not take very long for that sense of unity to give way to an appreciation of just how socially, economically, and ideologically fragmented American society is. For some, this was an excuse to return to their cynicism; for others, it was an invitation to lose their illusions and begin to see the world from the viewpoint of political activists. The Occupy Movement Explained describes this process of education and the lessons learned about "the 99%," the police, direct democracy, political demands, and the intimately related questions of social change, violence, and property. About the Author: Nicholas Smaligo Nicholas Smaligo is a PhD student, activist, and speaker. He was an active participant in the Occupy movement. He lives and works in southern Illinois, where he is involved in activism related to the environment, debt, and mass incarceration. About Occupy Wall Street Occupy Wall Street is a people-powered movement that began September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District and spread to over 100 cities in the United States and over 1,500 cities globally. The movement fought against the corrosive power of banks, corporations, and oppressive democracy as well as combatted the richest 1% of people that created an unfair global economy. Occupy Wall Street is credited with the achievement of changing the national conversation, making inequality a central political issue. 36 35. Contemporary Humorous Fiction For Review Tossed Off the Edge Patrick Brown Published: August 2014 ISBN: 978-1495359873 ASIN: B00N43OHFE Pages: 196 Genre: Fiction/Humor Indie author Patrick Brown has released his second book Tossed Off the Edge, a clever and hilarious sendup of the celebrity tell-all genre. The soap opera known as The Edge of Conflict has been keeping viewers tuned in every afternoon since 1970. The show was centered on the exploits and troubles of the very rich Knight Family of Hillvale. At the heart of this long-running drama is Regina, played by soap diva Sheila Wozniak, who grew from troubled teen to matriarch over the decades. Wozniak has won many awards, and once had an enormous fan base. However, as times have changed and soap opera audiences have dwindled, Wozniak found that her influence with the network and the international soap company Poplar & Grindle had waned just like her fan base. Refusing to change along with the show’s producers, she finds that she has been fired. There will be no more Regina, and to make her understand that they no longer want her, her televised funeral turns out to be an on-air cremation. There was no way for her to escape the flames. With very little acting experience outside of her four-decade role, Sheila Wozniak is unsure what to do next until a publishing house comes calling and asks her to write her memoirs. She is a drinker not a writer; so she hires her favorite former 38 head writer from The Edge of Conflict to ghost write her autobiography. The fun ensues almost immediately as Ms. Wozniak, ever the dramatic diva, goes into detail about her past. Due to the many years of playing the same character and being a fan of TV herself, she tells her story, leaving the reader entertained but wondering if she really was married to a successful Madison Avenue advertising agent (Bewitched) followed by a marriage to a successful California architect with three sons (The Brady Bunch) or went on a spiritual pilgrimage to Puerto Rico (The Flying Nun). From the book: “Regina Knight Harrison Donavan Taylor Donavan McDonald McDonald Woodward Merriweather Todd’s funeral was held on channel seven at 1:00 p.m. local time in every time zone across the country. If you had ever watched daytime TV between 1970 until her demise, you couldn’t have missed her. She was blond and dramatic, and she had been shot, paralyzed, kidnapped, raped and tortured numerous times. On her better days, she had given or received a number of internal organs, suffered heart attacks and endured a radical mastectomy… In spite of all the difficulties, Regina maintained a strong faith in the power of love. She was a one-man woman in spite of having been married nine times to seven different husbands who got younger and younger as Regina aged. For readers who thrive on an actor’s conflicts with ungrateful children, they won’t be disappointed since Miss Wozniak is under the impression that Mommie Dearest was intended to be a guide to raising children! Personal Health/Wellness Book For Review Heal Yourself!: How to Harness Placebo Power By Beverly A. Potter, PhD Publisher: Ronin Publishing ISBN: 978-1579511739 ASIN: B00GL9SKD8 Published: March 2014 Genre: Wellness Formats Available For Review: pdf, print (only available to qualified reviewers/bloggers) 52 Your body wants to be well—and it knows what to do to get better when something goes wrong. Doctors do not understand this, so they give you drugs. But drugs do not heal the body—they simply control certain processes to facilitate healing, while your body heals you. Research has revealed that the secret of the body's healing power can be found in "The Placebo Effect." The Placebo Effect frustrates doctors, because they don't understand it. The body does the healing. When your body knows something is out of balance, it moves to correct it — no matter what medicines you take or do not take. HEAL YOURSELF! shows how to harnessing your body's natural healing power to get well and stay well. The placebo’s amazing effects are not just "in the mind." They can be observed and measured in the body's physiology. When patients believe in a fake treatment, ulcers heal, warts disappear, cancer goes into remission, swelling reduces—cells actually look different under the microscope. And medical research reveals that it is not just fake treatments administered as "real" that can elicit the power of placebo. Relationships matter. Being married seems to help extend life more than stopping smoking!!! Similarly, spiritual life matters. Those who regularly attend church live up to 14 years longer than those who do not. Attitude matters, too. Happy people live 7-10 years longer and optimists are 77% less likely to get heart disease. HEAL YOURSELF! explains what happens in the brain to change the body. It explains how researchers believe that the stress response creates an environment that promotes physiological breakdown, while the "Relaxation Response" creates a healing environment. More importantly, HEAL YOURSELF! offers specific things you can do, and do today, to turn on your body's innate healing mechanisms. This book will take you through a journey through some of the different stages of Life Destiny. The voyage of this book starts off with the inspiring chapter of "Turning Lemons into Lemonade." Then we will venture into the anger land of "Ticked Off." After that, we will calm down, breathe and we’ll arrive at "Letting Life Flow." After we are flowing for some time, we will be pulled into the sea of "Depression." Once we survive this, we will finally arrive at the last chapter of this book, "What Does Life Mean?" The up and down cycles of life have touched us all at some point in our lives. It’s like a roller coaster ride that’s unpredictable. I've experienced this before. One minute my life was going great and then all of a sudden, an obstacle was thrown my way. During those times, I have asked myself these questions. What do I do? How do I handle it? How have others handled it? In some cases, knowing other people’s experiences with similar situations can bring clarity. This has helped me with some of my life decisions. Obstacles will come. That’s a fact. It’s not a matter of if; it’s a matter of when. The outcome can be affected by the decision of how it is managed. We will explore these things and more throughout this book. So fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride through this book of Life Destiny. At a young age, she lost her mother to breast cancer shortly after her brother Charlie was born. Raising her baby brother under the wrathful eye of an abusive and alcoholic father, she relies heavily on her small, but tight core of friends. Lisa, her best friend from kindergarten, and Chris, her longtime boyfriend, help to keep her above water. Along with her friends, Piper’s elderly neighbor, Ester, and her lynx point Siamese cat, Jazz, become the extended family she never had. Even before her mom died, Piper always felt different. She was opposite of her popular best buddy Lisa, and didn’t enjoy doing what most other teenage girls liked to do. She wasn’t much for fixing up and thought hanging out was boring. Music and nature were her muses. Piper grew up next to a forest with countless paths, one of which led to the high school; the others to myriad of seasonal wonders. Piper spent countless hours in the woods exploring and finding solace in the trees, wild flowers, and every kind of animal. Although somewhat shy and insecure of her voice, Piper was lead vocals and a passionate bass player for a garage band called ‘The Coat Tails’ that consisted of Lisa, Chris, and their close friend Josh. Having never sounded better, they were sure to win the senior talent show. After a Spring Fling dance, a near-death experience prematurely rebirths Piper to her destiny, for not even she knows who she really is. Her identity has remained buried deep for her protection. She awakens to a dimension where light laden with emotions emits from everything around her. Overnight, Piper and her world are transformed into something radically different. What she thought was real 63 was only the beginning, a thin veneer to actual reality. Universal truths are turned upside down. She wakes to a magical world with an ancient history and kingdoms of races. Life becomes way more beautiful, complex, and breathtaking than she ever imagined. A menagerie of supernatural and metallic gleaming mythical characters come to assist Piper to take her first steps in her new world and keep her safe. The realm of brilliant auras, feelings, and endless color surround her creating a language she doesn’t understand. She begins a long journey to discovering and mastering her powers and senses that defy fantasy. Riding gravity waves, casting spells, and leaping to exotic locations become her new curriculum. However, amongst the Eden lies a fatal danger. For centuries, a tyrannical rule has suppressed and strangled the enchanted world she is now part of. A most brilliant Guardian, named Eli, and his council, the Arbitri, have become the only voice. Evolution has stopped. Only Piper has the power to bring about change. Amongst the unspeakable beauty, unknown danger, and the desire to find out who she really is, Piper stumbles upon an unexplainable, first-time love that becomes the only thing that she can cling to in her stormy and unexpected life. From the first time his voice dances on her ear drums, she is taken by something wonderfully unreal. Piper now must juggle her two worlds – and disguise her increasing abilities and morphing appearance while attempting to be the slightly nerdy teenager everyone knows. This story captivates the imagination with the beauty of nature and the celebration of love, life, and light – and the power of one girl. Sci-Fi Comedy Thriller For Review In Favour of Fools By J. Battle ASIN: B00ISV15U2 Genre: Science Fiction, Comedy Formats Available For Review: PDF, Epub, Mobi A PI/SCI-FI/Comedy/Thriller introducing Philip Humphrey Chandler as the socially inept hero who likes beer, coffee and breasts - but not necessarily in that order. Phil is private investigator; he's got a computer and a comfy chair, and he knows how to use them. He doesn't get all sweaty chasing the bad guys; not when his fingers can do the work as he sips his coffee and looks forward to a nice cool pint. He doesn't wrestle them to the ground, with a quick quip and a steely gaze; not when he can sit in his comfy chair and dream about the girl behind the bar; the one with the breasts. Then he meets the ex wife of a missing crime lord, and everything changes. Suddenly he's squirting to distant planets, finding dead bodies, dancing with aliens, saving a world from the clutches of the cutest of aliens and, for one brief moment, he becomes the richest man in the universe. In a tale of treachery, danger, poor customer service and bad jokes, Phil is forced to put aside his relaxed 'let someone else do the work' attitude, and take up arms against the might of an alien empire (well, it's a crow bar actually, and the alien 71 is a little girl; a very tough little girl) and somehow find a way to save the day, and Earth's most valuable commodity, and maybe even his dignity. But where does this story really start? Of course, for Phil, it’s when he first meets the ex-wife of the missing crime lord; I guess it’s typical of him to think it all started with him. For Ben, it would be the misplaced bullet; for Millie, it was, of course, the Joke, and for Sam; well your guess is as good as mine. In reality, it started much earlier; nine years earlier, with the robbery... A laugh a minute comedy science fiction thriller filled with alien worlds, strangely named AI’s, really bad jokes and a Narrative Facilitator who would really rather be doing something else.
