PARISH CONNECTIONS
The Benefice of Brimpsfield with Birdlip, Daglingworth, The Duntisbournes,
Edgeworth, Miserden, Syde and Winstone
From The Rector
“Who is My Neighbour?” This is the title of a Pastoral Letter written to you and
me by all the bishops of the Church of England about the coming elections. There
have been predictable cries that the Church shouldn’t meddle in politics. Well,
this document isn’t about party politics; it is about the political and social health
of our society.
So what do the bishops say to us? The first point they underline is that politics
IS important; and it is our Christian duty to vote. Over the years, from the Civil
War, Chartists, Suffragettes, and many others have suffered and even died so that
you and I could have the right to vote. And people all over the world would give
their eye-teeth for that democratic right which we enjoy, and all too often take
for granted. It is a fundamental duty of every British person – and certainly every
Christian citizen – to exercise their right to vote.
The second point that the bishops make is that parliamentary democracy isn’t
working well in the UK today. A quarter to a third of the population doesn’t bother
to vote in national elections. Three quarters don’t bother either for European or
County Council elections. And even less than that for Parish Council elections. It’s
pathetic. We have GOT to work out what’s wrong and how to do better: for the
alternative to ‘disciplined democracy’ is civil unrest.
WHY are people so apathetic? After all, say the bishops, our politicians, national
and local, are by and large good people who actually want to make Britain a
great Britain to live in. It’s a hell of a job, and they need all our sympathy and
understanding and support. So, why don’t people appreciate them? Why don’t
people vote?
Well partly, say the bishops, it’s the way politics in the UK are run.
Now that debates in the House of Commons are televised we can see – to our
amazement ¬- that for most debates, most of the benches are empty, and Prime
Minister’s Question Time is quite appalling. Parliamentary politics in the UK at the
moment are seen as a confrontational slanging match between the parties. All of
which leads us to mistrust politicians and their promises – “Well, they would say
that, wouldn’t they?”
Actually, we, the voters, are seriously perplexed. We are not children. We want –
and deserve – a ‘respectful dialogue’, an HONEST discussion about, for instance,
immigration, the health service, housing – and the EU for heaven’s sake.
3
But above all, what we, the voters, long for, say the bishops, is an overarching
vision about what sort of society we want/need for a fulfilling life in the 21st
century; both for us AND for our grandchildren. And they go on to offer a whole
range of what they call ‘Visions worth voting for’: Christian-grounded visions. But
you must read the detail of all this for yourselves. Let me finish with a quote from
the document .
“This letter is about building a vision of a better kind of world, a better society and
better politics. Underlying these ideas is the concept of virtue – what it means to
be a good person, a good politician, a good neighbour and a good community”.
And that, I suggest, is no bad thing for the bishops to be writing to us about!
Canon Andrew Bowden
LESOTHO LUNCH
Thank you so much to all who came to our lunch and who so generously donated
money to Prince Harry's charity, Sentebale, for orphaned and sick children in
Lesotho. It was a hugely sociable gathering in Duntisbourne Abbots Village Hall,
and an amazing £700+ was raised. Special thanks to all those who helped in
any way - cooking, washing up, selling raffle tickets, taking money at the door, and
much else besides - all for a very good cause.

Easter: Our place in God’s story, by the Revd Canon Andrew
Braddock, Director of Mission and Ministry
Let me tell you a story. It’s an invitation every generation responds to. Stories are
all around us, from the first stories we tell our children to the latest best-seller,
from the story line of an advert to TV drama, theatre and film. The best stories
draw us in, speaking to our hearts and minds. They can make us laugh or cry and,
at best, enlarge our vision of the world and our understanding of ourselves.
So it’s not surprising that the Christian faith was first shared through telling the
stories of Jesus: especially the defining story of Jesus’ arrest, death and resurrection.
As the first Christians engaged with this story so they came to realise that they
were being caught up in God’s great story of love and redemption for the world.
A new resource, ‘Cross my heart’, www.gloucester.anglican.org/parish-life/crossmy-heart shares contemporary faith stories. They speak of hope and transformation
when we allow the story of Jesus to bring meaning to our lives. As the church
invites us to experience Holy Week and Easter once again so, through worship,
drama, music and other activities, we are also invited to connect our stories with
the defining story of Jesus’ death and resurrection and have our understanding of
ourselves and the world renewed.
What happened when God came into your life?
Do you have a story to tell about your journey to faith? Encourage others, inspire
strangers and grow in faith as you share your story on our new webpage www.

Saturday @ Six = Sunday @ Six
The Celtic Praise format for our experimental “Saturday@Six” has been quite exciting
to put on, and has proven inspirational. However, congregation numbers from
across the Benefice have been disappointing. We said we’d run it from November
to March and then review it.
There does seem to be an enthusiasm to continue with it, but present plans are to
move it back to the 3rd Sunday of each month. It was decided at the outset to skip
April, so the next service will be on 17th May, at 6 pm, at St Bartholomew’s, Winstone.
All are welcome, whether usually going to one of the Benefice churches or not.
Come and see what it’s about.

Birdlip and Brimpsfield Cricket Club
It seems amazing, but the cricket season is just around the corner,
officially beginning on Saturday 25th April. For those who have not
been, the club is situated in the most picturesque setting behind
Birdlip Primary School. We are fortunate enough to have a large
pavilion with veranda and bar, and it is my hope that these shall
be put to full use this season. Already, we have a range of social
events planned, from live music to wine tasting. It is important to
me that BBCC is seen as a welcoming place and a social club as much as a cricket
club. I want to take this opportunity to invite you and your friends and family along
on Saturday 25th to join me for some cricket and a drink!
Volunteers Required If you think you could spare a few hours to help prepare
the cricket pitch for home games, we want to hear from you! All training and
equipment will be provided.
Calling All Cricketers I would also like to put out a call for any aspiring cricketers
out there. BBCC is a fantastic place to play, and we have a range of teams to suit
all abilities and time constraints. David Cooper (07988 631099) Chairman, BBCC
Brimpsfield & Mid-Cotswold Garden Society: We have two events in April,
beginning with our Annual General Meeting and Supper on Friday 10th April, at
7.30pm (full details have been sent to members). Saturday 25th April is the date
for our popular Plant Sale and Coffee Morning; Brimpsfield Village Hall will be
open from 10.30am for refreshments and to receive plants for sale, with selling
starting at 11am. Any plants or anything garden-related that you would like to
donate for sale to benefit Society funds will be gratefully received, or just come
along for plant bargains, a coffee and a chat!

Duntisbourne Abbots W.I.
Our February meeting took the form of a Skittles Match at Daglingworth Village
Hall. The stormy weather may have deterred some from coming, but those who
braved the elements enjoyed a hugely sociable evening. Sylvia Holness and Louise
Wigfield provided a delicious curry and quiche supper, and Paul Groombridge was
on hand at the bar to replenish our glasses. Many thanks to Chrissie Harwood and
all who helped to organise such a jolly get-together, not to mention the setters-up
who worked hard to keep up with us.
Our next meeting will be on 16th April, at 7.30 p.m. in Duntisbourne Abbots Village
Hall. Shani Wills will be giving us a demonstration on Sugar Paste Decoration.
Why not come and learn all about it.

be available.
If you prefer to do some rubbish clearing in the days immediately before or after
the weekend, please ring Geoff Elliott on 653434, and he will arrange to provide

AWARD-WINNING THEATRE AT SYDE MANOR TITHE BARN
WEDNESDAY 22ND APRIL 7PM
“SO IT GOES”
a true story by On The Run Theatre Company
In August 2012, Hannah told David that she wanted to make a show about her
dad, who died when she was seventeen. Hannah has always wanted to talk about
her dad. But in the seven years since he died, she hasn’t quite managed it. SO IT
GOES is the almost entirely word-less show by Hannah Moss and David Ralfe, in
which David helps Hannah on her journey through memory, laughter and sorrow,
in order finally to come to terms with losing her dad.
Hannah says: ‘I was with David at the Edinburgh Festival in 2012, six years after
my dad died, when I had the idea for So It Goes. I was inspired by the shows that
didn’t rely on spoken language, and I started to try and talk about my dad and my
experience through writing on a whiteboard. Talking about my dad had been hard
until then, but I felt freed by the whiteboard and it became the central part of the
show, symbolising a universal theme: how difficult it is to talk about grief.’
Andrew and I saw this show at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 and it was
overwhelmingly the best thing we saw that year. It also got a 5-star review from
Dominic Maxwell in The Times. We discovered that they were planning a UK tour,
invited them to Syde, and were thrilled to pieces when they said Yes! Please do
join us on 22nd April for an extraordinarily moving experience. Suitable for all ages
except children under the age of about eight.
Tickets £10 on the door; £5 for children,
to include a drink with the cast.
Running time approx.1 hour

In her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying
instrument.

Ps 25:7 "Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious
ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are
good."
I remember the sins of my youth: And I remember my rebellious
ways: I find it hard to grasp how God does not remember. I know
Scripture says He sees me through Jesus who washes me clean
and bright as snow. But still. I remember them. How can he not?
There is a feeling of such tremendous guilt when I write down and read back to
myself these terrible things. It is truly a mystery, an undeserved grace, that my faith
teaches that God does not see them. How can I live today under the truth that the
slate is wiped clean? How do I do that? It seems almost impossible. I cannot wipe
my mind or memory clean. I cannot wash my guilt away. I must depend utterly
on Christ to do it for me. Help me Lord to live, act, breathe, speak as one who
has been forgiven, whose sins are not remembered, whose rebellious ways are
forgotten. It is one of the miracles of Easter, that I can even pray that prayer.

The Environment Agency, which is navigation authority for the Thames, is now
recruiting for the 2015 season and are looking for volunteers who can commit
to assisting at least one day a week between May and the end of September.
Volunteers can agree their days with lock keepers but need to be available from 10
to 5. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and to find out more about the
Thames , its history, wildlife and management. At the same time volunteers know
that they are doing something worthwhile that is really appreciated.

Alexander Technique Teacher MSTAT
Learning to use the Alexander Technique can improve your breathing,
clarity of thought, and your ability to handle life’s stresses, so that you can
be more relaxed, confident and maintain your health.
You gain an understanding of the body's fundamental design, and a way
to move that can help you feel better, on your own. You become more
attuned to your body's warning signs of tension and compression, giving
you a chance to change your habits that cause unnecessary tightness. An
improvement in poise and general vitality is a bonus! For all ages and
outlooks.

Roy Poysor who volunteers at Iffley Lock said:
"Since becoming a volunteer lock keeper I am absorbed in a completely different
environment where my assistance is greeted by the enthusiastic boating
fraternity who give me immense pleasure with their friendship and banter"
Our Volunteer Assistant Lock Keepers work alongside paid lock keepers. They
help boats pass through the lock safely: taking ropes, directing traffic, and
operating sluices and lock gates. They help maintain the site: painting, tidying
and gardening. They provide information to visitors, be they on foot or afloat, so
that they can make the best of their time on the river. Visitors really appreciate
the local knowledge that volunteers can provide.
All applicants are invited to an assessment at a local lock. Here they will have the
role explained to them and be shown what it involves in practical terms. They
will also be assessed to decide which site may be most appropriate for them
and to ensure that they have the physical capabilities required. After successful
completion of the assessment, they attend an induction course which focuses on
safety and preparing them for the lock side.
On the lock side the volunteers follow a documented training programme before
being signed off to take charge of the lock on their own. This will only be for
short periods, while the paid keeper is at lunch for example.
William Partridge who volunteers at Benson Lock had the following to say:
“2015 will be my fifth year as a volunteer lock keeper. I have enjoyed every
moment of it, come rain or shine. I look forward to it in the knowledge that I
am helping boaters and lock staff alike. It gives me great pleasure to make a
contribution”
Volunteers are provided with uniform and can claim mileage for travel to and
from a lock local to them. They also receive a monthly newsletter which keeps
them in touch with what is going on along the river and other activities of the
Environment Agency.
If you would like to find out more about volunteering on the Thames and to
receive an information pack and application form, please contact the Volunteer
Team on 01491 828360 or email thames.volunteers@environment-agency.gov.
