 WYD16 Pilgrim Group Leader Role Accountabilities
Pilgrim Group Leaders are integral to the success of the WYD 16 Pilgrimages for the Catholic Diocese of
Parramatta.
Group leaders will:
Be provided with a formation program that will enable them to carry out their roles.
Have the opportunity to experience their pilgrimage during WYD
Receive support from the WYD Leadership Team, Chaplains and their peers’ pre, during and post WYD
The Pilgrim Group Leader ensures the safety and wellbeing of pilgrims attending Parramatta Pilgrimages to
World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow, Poland. The Pilgrim Group Leader is integral to facilitating the full
participation of pilgrims, as well as the pre-and post-pilgrimage formation programs. The Pilgrim Group
Leader will provide friendly support to each pilgrim, exercise a responsible duty of care at all times and
facilitate opportunities that strengthen group morale and diocesan identity.
Prior to the WYD pilgrimage, Group Leaders are expected to participate fully in the formation for leaders
program and the pilgrim formation program. Group Leaders will be expected to meet with their group at
formation sessions and lead activities and discussion. Key WYD events, such as the WYD Commissioning
Mass are integral to the WYD pilgrimage. It is expected that Group Leaders attend these events and
facilitate activities. The post-WYD formation program is also a key component. Group
Leaders function as a link between the pilgrims, parish and diocesan groups that pilgrims can connect with
for their on-going faith journey.
During the WYD pilgrimage, the Pilgrim Group Leader is responsible for a group of ten (approx.) pilgrims
aged 16-35 years and reports in the first instance to his / her designated Bus Leader and Pilgrimage Coordinator
Responsibilities of the Group Leaders are as follows:

Religious Leadership
1.1
Be able to articulate the Christian understanding of pilgrimage and the Diocesan Vision for World Youth
Day
1.2
Give personal witness to the teachings of the Gospel in personal interactions and in carrying out the day-today duties of the position
1.3
Provide an example to pilgrims by entering fully into the liturgical and spiritual life of the pilgrimage and
encouraging others to do the same

Support the Pilgrimage Co-ordinator, Chaplain and Team (Bus) Leader by modelling, and leading groups in
liturgy, prayer and reflection

Encourage the pilgrims in their group to support each other, make a positive contribution and share their
WYD experiences with the group
1.6
Ensure that pilgrims, especially those for whom direct responsibility is taken, actively engage in elements of
the WYD pre-pilgrimage experience and WYD week, including Catechesis, the Youth Festival, Stations of
the Cross, the Vigil and the Final Mass
1.7
Encourage students to appreciate and respect the holy sites visited during the pilgrimage.
1.8 Foster opportunities to link pilgrims with parish and school in the pursuit of ongoing formation activities.

Human Resources Leadership
2.1
Initiate, collaborate and facilitate in the process of team building within pilgrim groups
2.2
Nurture a culture of collaboration and support with fellow Pilgrim Group Leaders
2.3
Monitor the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of all pilgrims, determining if further assistance and
/ or support is required
2.4
Advise the Bus Leader and Pilgrimage Co-ordinator of any illness, misadventure or misconduct involving
student pilgrims, recording the relevant details
2.5
Establish and maintain effective communication with all members of your group, Chaplain and Bus Leader
3.0
Organisational Leadership
3.1
Ensure your pilgrims follow the day-to-day program, including: wake up calls, meals, roll-checks, meeting
points and times
3.2
Follow procedures for the packing and assembly of luggage for aircraft and bus check-in

Follow procedures for check-in and departure from airports, hotels and other accommodation for your
pilgrims

Ensure that pilgrims follow an agreed Code of Conduct, at all times
3.5
Facilitate the safe storage of money and other valuables of pilgrims
3.6
Obtain and maintain the relevant paperwork before and during the pilgrimage that includes the
administration of first aid and medication
3.7
Support the Team Leader and Pilgrimage Co-ordinator in the efficient conduct of the pilgrimage
3.8
Undertake other duties as required. (E.g. leadership during accommodation events).

Protection Legislation)
