As an Earth Day bonus, here’s a quick look at my favorite outdoor

As much as I hate yard work,
Andy’s grandparents in England
love it. As managers of a retirement

it’s terrible to drive through

The play was great (who doesn’t think
their child’s play was great?), and as is custom

Reviewing the pictures of my son and one of

that this five-day field trip to Boston with 20+
fifth-graders and at least that many adults has
potential for being a grand adventure or doom.
We’re visiting many historic sites associated
with the American Revolution, the most
important of which is Fenway Park, where we’ll
attend a game Wednesday night and sit behind

was used to squash British soldiers in one of
the Boston skirmishes. I’ve worked on a picture

In addition, there’s a freshly re-painted logo
on the wave pool’s nearly 2,000-square-foot
backdrop.
Also new this year is a “insurance policy”:
Since children shorter than 35 inches are
admitted free, and kids tend to grow like
summer weeds, you can purchase a Shipwreck
Insurance policy for $50 for kids close to the
cut-off height. If your child reaches 35 inches
during the season, you turn your insurance
policy in for a season pass. If the child is still
shorter than 35 inches at the end of August,
Shipwreck will apply the $50 toward a 2016
season pass.
Shipwreck Island opened in the summer
of 1983, and has grown steadily, adding or
updating attractions over the years. It now
employs about 300 teens in concessions, as
life guards and in other areas each summer.
The park covers 20 acres with attractions that
include:
• The Ocean Motion Wave Pool, a 500,000gallon pool that generates 3-foot waves every
10 minutes.
• The Raging Rapids, which allows guests
to ride an individual inner tube along more
than 300 feet of simulated white water rafting,
ending with a 50-foot splash down slide.
• The Zoom Flume, the oldest attraction
at the park, which has three flumes that curve
along a man-made hill and splash down into a
common pool.
• The Great Shipwreck, a replica 17th
century sailing ship from which guests swing
out on a cable and drop into a “lagoon.”
• The Lazy River, more than 2,000 feet of slow
moving “creek” that provides a relaxing ride.
News Herald file photo
Shipwreck also has several canteen choices for
food, beverages and snacks including a selection
of burgers, pizza, hotdogs, salads, barbecue,
wraps, funnel cakes, ice cream, and frozen drinks.
In addition, the Pirate’s Plunder shop carries
Panama Jack suncare products, sunglasses, Tshirts, hats, souvenirs and much more.

“I probably
know about
every fourth customer that comes in
here,” said manager Scott Goldwire,
whose favorite is the “chicken fajita
burrita.”
Originally from Georgia, Goldwire
first tried Barberitos in Athens, Ga.
“I had no restaurant experience
but I was familiar with the restaurant,
a great concept ... the approach
they take to freshness. We prepare
everything every day, and the idea
is to quit counting calories and start
counting chemicals. We don’t add
any chemicals or preservatives —
down to our spices. They are specially
blended, so we can control what’s
in it.”
All produce and herbs are
naturally grown and all meats are
completely hormone and additive
free. The beef, from ground to steaks,
also is grass-fed.
“We marinate all of our meats in a
marinade we make here,” Goldwire
said.“We try to get as many things
locally sourced as possible; we are
part of Green Fields Together. We get
our chicken from a specialty supplier,
hormone-free chicken.”
Though the tortillas are not made
in-house, the chips are made fresh
daily from the corn tortillas. The flour
tortillas are the most popular for the
tacos and burritos, and gluten-free
tortillas also are available.
“We go through close to 60
pounds of chips daily,” Goldwire said.
“The Heavy D — a mild garden salsa
variety, is the most popular. We make
about 10 gallons of that a day, and
about 15 gallons of salsa total.”
The salsa bar features Heavy D
salsa, Tomatillo salsa, Fire Roasted
Poblano Salsa, Smoked Chipotle Hot
of tilapia, lime, guacamole,
tomatoes, cheese and cilantro
— and added a small side of
cheese dip at the register.
Though I decided I would
not order the tacos with fish
again, everything else tasted
so good and fresh, I knew I
would be back to find what I
would like better.
I wouldn’t change anything
about the thin tortilla chips
with the Heavy D salsa. The
Tomatillo salsa was a close
second, and the smoky, slightly
sweet Fire Roasted Poblano
would probably be good on
a fajita.
The creamy cheese dip

I wanted even more chips. (I

generation,’” said Goldwire,
who has a 6-year-old daughter.
My husband switched his
order up with the steak fajita
burrito, which he also liked.
“A regular burrito with
nothing on it will be about
1 pound up to 23 ounces
depending on what you put
on it,” said Goldwire, who
added,“The regular chicken
burrito is the most popular.”
Telling the lady behind
the counter,“I would like
the chicken quesadilla,” led
to a slew of questions. She
acknowledged this and took a
comedic approach: Regular or
spicy chicken? Flour or corn?
Toppings? Side of sour cream?
The regular chicken
quesadilla with fresh pico de
gallo and another sprinkle of
cilantro had me finishing my
basket, and our son finished
his kids’ ground beef taco, plus
one more, and his cookie. (My
husband couldn’t finish his
burrito, but seems to enjoy
this challenge.)
Barberitos has more than
40 locations in the Southeast,
including five in Florida.
“I have plans to open at
least one more — at the beach
first to cover both sides of the
bridge,” Goldwire said.
The salsa bar features Heavy D salsa,
Tomatillo salsa, Fire Roasted Poblano
Salsa, Smoked Chipotle Hot Sauce and
fresh lemons and limes. Freshly made
chips and salsa come with every taco,
burrito, quesadilla or bowl. Cheese dip is a
popular add-on.

Memphis at Portland 9:30 p.m.
Favorite Drink to make: Probably the Lifesaver or the
Absolute Stress; they usually go over well with customers.
Sunday, April 26
What’s the most sold drink in the bar? The Long Island;
BMF has always sold well, too. We sell lots of shots of Fireball;
we always get rid of Fireball. And our house drink, the Lifesaver,
goes, too.
Cleveland at Boston Noon
Los Angeles at San Antonio 2:30 p.m.
Toronto at Washington 5:30 p.m.
Houston at Dallas 8 p.m.
When someone says “surprise me,” what’s your go-to
drink? First I usually ask if they like sweet. And if not, I can go
from there, depending on what the customers like. Long Island
usually goes good for people who don’t like sweet — a lot of
rum.
MLB SCHEDULE
Friday, April 24
New York at New York 6:05 p.m.
Boston at Baltimore 6:05 p.m.
Atlanta at Philadelphia 6:05 p.m.
Have you created your own concoction? Over at the other
bar I work at I was working a lot with Smirnoff Watermelon sour.
I put melon liqueur at the bottom and then I topped it off with
Sprite and then the watermelon sour.
Which cocktail do you dread making? Margarita. The salt
gets everywhere and usually everybody wants it different ways.
It takes a little longer to make than the other drinks.
What is the strangest thing a customer has ever told
you? Do you sell liquor here? Or, what do you have to
drink? A lot of the other stuff is probably inappropriate.
When do you know when a customer has had
too much? You can always tell by body language.
They’ll be weaving around or buying other people
drinks. I’ve seen someone walk right into the door. If
they are regulars, you can usually tell. I’m usually pretty
friendly about cutting people off.
Drink specials? It’s a great place to just relax; we always
have good deals. On Wednesdays we have dollar drinks ($1
wells, $2 calls, $3 top shelf) and on Thursdays, we have all
you can drink for $10 (well drinks and draft beer).
Who’s your favorite potion pourer? Do
you know of some funky concoction we
should feature? If you know a bartender
who spills the best Sazerac or makes a
margarita like no other email their info
to jschaefer@pcnh.com and we’ll send
someone over to Meet the Mixologist.

DREAM TEAM
Seabreeze Jazz Festival
features Grammy winners
By JAN WADDY
747-5072 | @JanWaddy1
jwaddy@pcnh.com
PANAMA CITY BEACH — The smooth
sounds continue into the weekend with
the “Dream Team” during the 17th annual
Seabreeze Jazz Festival.
“We kind of talk about George Benson,
David Sanborn and Al Jarreau with Brian
Culbertson, our mainstay, as being the
Dream Team,” said Mark Carter, president of
The Seabreeze 106.3 FM.
The 10-time Grammy Award winning jazz
guitarist and singer George Benson, who
goes on stage Friday night, also performed
at Seabreeze in 2011. But this will be
the first appearance for jazz vocalist Al
Jarreau, a seven-time Grammy winner, and
saxophonist David Sanborn, winner of six
Grammy Awards. Benson and Jarreau both
received a 2007 Grammy for Best Traditional
R&B Performance for “God Bless the Child.”
“This is the most Grammy winners we’ve
had in any festival line up. Norman Brown
also is a Grammy-award winner,” Carter said.
“George Benson had a smooth jazz album
that was nominated for the most Grammys
by a jazz artist ever.”
Jarreau goes on stage Saturday just
before BWB, a group formed by guitarist and
singer Norman Brown in 2002. BWB features
Brown with saxophonist Kirk Whalum and
trumpeter Rick Braun. Brown won a Grammy
Award in 2003 for 2002’s “Just Chillin’,” his
fifth album.
Local ticket outlets include the Florida
House and Pompano Joe’s at Pier Park, and
festival tickets will be sold at the event.
“As long as tickets are left, will be selling
at them at the gate,” Carter said. “Saturday

A new Gold Reserved
Section with provided
seating has been added this
year right behind the VIP
section, which is sold out.
On Wednesday, about 20
tickets were left for the Gold
Reserved Section.
“Basically, it’s the VIP
ticket without the food,”
Carter said.
Tickets will be in the form
of high-tech wristbands
from Intellitix, and the
armbands will replace the
need for cash or credit cards
at the event.
“This year the entire
event is cashless. All food,
merchandise and CDs will
only be purchased through

Vendors only will accept
swipes of the encrypted

Registering and loading
money on the armbands

Bands also can be loaded
and topped off at Top Up
Stations in Aaron Bessant
Park. The money that
you don’t spend will be
refunded.
“We will have gourmet
food trucks from Atlanta,
Jacksonville and Tallahassee
— offering things such as
Mediterranean,” Carter said.
“We will have some local
— Smoke N Butts barbecue
from Panama City Beach.
Many will be from out of
town, a lot more variety.”
Bring empty sports
bottles or water bottles for
free water refills in the park
at the Water Monster filling
stations.
The Seabreeze 106.3 FM
is sponsoring a free Sunday
after party at Jimmy Buffett’s
Margaritaville in Pier Park.
Doors open at 10:30 p.m.,
and the show starts at 11
p.m. Admission is free, with
items from the restaurant’s
full menu and bar available
for purchase. The Seabreeze
End of Festival After Party
will feature Matt Marshak,
Four 80 East, Marcus
Anderson and Friends.
“We have special guest
artists who come and jam
with them, but we never
know who it will be until
that night,” Carter said.
Named “Top 10 Jazz
Festival” by JazzIZ Magazine,
Seabreeze brings in more
than 25,000 fans for an
upbeat and cool weekend of
good vibes for all ages.
“We’d like to see even
more events in Panama City
Beach that cater to families,”
Carter added.

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Bugs
will be swarming the parking lot at
Spinnaker Beach Club on Saturday
when the fifth annual Beaches, Bugs
and Buses returns.
“We have had 160 Volkswagens
show up. We are predicting over
200 this year,” said Jason Brown,
president of the German Metal VW
Club Inc. “We have people coming
from Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi
and Louisiana.”
This year, a Pre-Show Meet and
Greet Party will take place Friday
night at C-Level Bar & Grill, 5508
Thomas Drive, with live music and
beer and food specials. The party
begins at 6 p.m., and the public is
welcome.
“A lot of people will be there
from out of town,” Brown said.
“Anybody can come out and look at
the cars.”
Brown began the German Metal
vehicles and more elaborate
modifications. For those looking to
make their own mods, the event will
feature a raffle for wheels.
“We’re doing multiple raffles
— wheels and a 50/50 raffle,” Brown
said. “Last year we donated $3,800
to Anchorage Children’s Home. Half
of the proceeds from the 50/50
raffle go to the charity, as well as
proceeds from T-shirt sales and
registration.”
The Sugar Sands Roller Dolls,
an all women roller derby team
in Panama City, also will be at
Spinnaker. The restaurant will be
serving its regular menu.
“We will have a hula-hoop
contest, Volkswagen tattoo contest
and a kids’ area with coloring for
prizes,” Brown added.
Anyone who has a tattoo of a
Volkswagen is eligible for the tattoo
contest.
“One guy had his whole calf
covered with a Volkswagen scene
— a couple of buses and sunset,”
Brown said.

members, ranging in age from 18
to 67, own old bugs, newer bugs
— and both.
“We all bond; we all have the
same interests,” Brown said. “I have
a 1957 Volkswagen single cab, a ’65
Camper/Bus, a ’56 Beetle and a ’72
Squareback.”
The Volkswagen Type 2 panel
van derived from the Type 1 (Beetle)
and was introduced in 1950 by the
German automaker.
“Buses have now skyrocketed
— going for $50,000 to $80,000 for
the older ones,” Brown said.
The Type 3 was introduced in
the 1960s and came in three body
styles. The station wagon became
known as the “Squareback.”
Pre-registration has ended for
Saturday’s event, but Volkswagen
owners can still register for $25 onsite. Only a few spaces remain, and it
will be first-come, first-served.
Trophy awards at 2 p.m. with
Volkswagens in 20 different classes.
Admission is free for spectators,
who just want to check out restored

‘WHILE WE’RE
YOUNG’
“While We’re Young” is smart, funny,
and written with a lot of intention.
Unfortunately, it’s also a little too
ambitious.
Writer-director Noah Baumbach
offers up some great dialogue, but
he also gives us a product that is
dramatically flimsy and not half as clever
as it aims. The story follows a middleaged documentary filmmaker, played
by Ben Stiller, and his wife, played by
Naomi Watts, as their marriage becomes
reinvigorated through their new
friendship with a young, lively couple.
Had “While We’re Young” been wise
enough to concentrate on one or two
narrative strands it may have been great,
but instead we get a muddied, though
very entertaining, mess of a product.
Director: Noah Baumbach
Starring: Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts,
Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried,
It’s a film about a generational divide,
growing old, staying young, marriage,
parenthood, friendship, creative integrity,
process vs. product, mainstream product
vs. hipster product, and documentary vs.
fiction, among too many other things.
The film is at its best when it’s relaxed
and without any agenda. As it develops,
it becomes far less interesting, and its
third act manages to somehow be
predictable, zany and preachy all at once.
It’s Baumbach’s middle-aged
autobiography, and he comes across as
a kind of grumpy old man, painting with
broad strokes an aging generation as
arbiters of values and truth and a new
one that neither has values nor cares
about truth at all. It’s more complex than
that, to be fair, but fundamentally this is

the picture he has created.
“While We’re Young” brings the intended
laughs but lacks its intended profundity.

born in Long Beach, Calif., always has preferred
popcorn and a movie to a long walk on the beach.

charms
The older I get, the more I realize growing up
and finding purpose doesn’t end at a certain
age, and we only have so much of this life to
enjoy. This overwhelmingly quick passage of
time is looked at with humor and heart in 45year-old director Noah Baumbach’s (“Frances
Ha,”“The Squid and the Whale”) most purely
comedic film to date.
Through hilariously relatable awkwardness
and tons of misplaced conceit,“While We’re
Young” presents a fear of aging that replaces
gerascophobia with loads of laughs.
Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a longmarried filmmaking couple who befriend
and ultimately admire a young artistic pair
and their apparent zest for life. Through
Baumbach’s smoothly prompt style, the story

of these hipsters moves along quite nicely,
readily mining their pretentious and absurd
community for all the comedy it holds. The
script is full of some great lines that show a
witty understanding of adulthood in all its
stages.
The cast also stands-out. I usually prefer Stiller
in his more over-the-top roles (“Zoolander”), but
he holds his own here. Watts is outstandingly
cute, funny and honest; Adam Driver is
charmingly abrasive; and Adam Horowitz,
known more for his rapping than his acting, is so
natural it’s hard to believe this isn’t his day-job.
These older actors and filmmakers are
clearly speaking from life experience, as the film
studies the unique difficulties of growing old
in youth-obsessed Hollywood. However, the
ethical ambiguities of success and the dangers
of personal pretension are universal. With so
much light-hearted spunk, WWY’s surface-y
themes are swept up in its ageless charms.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

has enjoyed viewing, debating and critiquing all
forms and aspects of film, from foreign films to
