Platform9 Managed OpenStack for VMware
AT A GLANCE
Solution Overview
Platform9 is the simplest way for an
organization to build an Enterprise-grade
OpenStack Private Cloud using existing
VMware vSphere infrastructure—with very
low operational overhead.
Platform9 provides on-demand access and
automated management for dev and test
workloads; enabling higher SLAs for end
users and eliminating repetitive provisioning
tasks for IT.
BENEFITS
• Agility: Eliminate time-consuming
provisioning operations for IT by enabling
self-service.
• Efficiency: Optimize utilization of existing
VMware infrastructure across teams and
users.
• Low Cost: Instantly repurpose existing
VMware infrastructure to power your
private cloud within minutes.
• Flexibility: Power your cloud with VMware,
KVM and soon Docker. Your cloud can
leverage any virtualization platform.
• Compatibility: Seamless integration with
VMware vSphere.
Target Audience
• IT and DevOps leaders looking to transform their
existing VMware environment into an Amazon-like
agile, self-service private cloud as a way to empower

Feature Summary
For Administrators
Infrastructure Pooling and
Resource Tiering
Pool together VMware hypervisors, data stores and
networks into one logical pool, then organize them into
multiple ‘virtual clusters’
• Multi-data center support: Pool together resources
across data centers and associate tags to distinguish
different locations.
• Resource Tiering: Use simple key-value pair tags to
create ‘virtual clusters’ of resources and assign to
different users.
• Policy-based rapid provisioning: Create virtual
machines in seconds while Platform9 optimizes for
resource utilization, application performance and
admin policies.
• Snapshotting: Snapshot existing virtual machines to
publish an image to the catalog.
Infrastructure Monitoring
• Visibility: Gain instantaneous visibility into capacity,
•
•
usage, allocation across compute, storage and
network, across geographies.
Alerts: Configure alerts based on key resource
metrics.
Capacity planning: Monitor and manage resource
utilization across your data centers. Setup
appropriate oversubscription factors to gain heavy
utilization.
Multi-Tenancy
Onboard multiple teams and users and enforce policybased access control and resource consumption.
• Quota based allocation: Allocate different pools of
•
capacity to different tenants.
Role based access: Enable role based access for
users.
Simple Setup
• Set up in minutes: No complex management
•
software to install, configure and upgrade.
Built-in monitoring: Platform9 engineers are often
the first to know of a problem in a customer
environment.

Discovery and Integration
• Existing infrastructure and workloads are seamlessly
•
imported.
Platform9 interoperates with existing tools. Users
are free to continue using their existing management
tools.
Image Catalog
Maintain a central repository of virtual machine images
that can be deployed and shared with different users.
• Public catalog: Download images for popular open
source operating system distributions.
• Existing images: Import local images directly, or via
URL.
• Linked clones: Reduce storage footprint by deduplicating data across virtual machines created
from the same image.
For Users
Self Service Portal
Get on-demand access to shared infrastructure.
• Rapid provisioning: Create and deploy virtual
machines instantaneously.
• Web-based access: Access your virtual machines
from anywhere using the web interface.
• Collaboration: Capture and share virtual machine
configurations easily both within and across teams.
Developer Libraries
Integrate with off-the-shelf OpenStack tools and
libraries:
• Scripting libraries such as libcloud, jcloud.
• Automation tools such as knife, chef, puppet, salt,
ansible and vagrant.
• Continuous integration systems such as Jenkins.
REST APIs and CLIs
Automate and script using APIs and CLIs.
