About us
Pavia, the university city
The University of Pavia is one of the world’s oldest academic
institutions: it was founded in 1361 and until the 20th century it was
the only university in the Milan area and the region of Lombardy. Today
24,000 students, from both Italy and overseas, study at our University.
Pavia is a small city in northern Italy with 70,000 inhabitants and over
24,000 students. Located only 30 km south of Milan, by regional and
suburban trains, every 10 minutes. Pavia is also within easy reach of the
Swiss border, Como and the lakes as well as Genoa and the Ligurian
coast.
The University of Pavia covers all subject areas and is composed of 18
Departments offering study programmes at all levels, from Bachelor’s
degrees to Doctorate programmes. Close attention is paid to each
student by our academic staff (900 professors and researchers). 87.5%
of our graduates find employment within a year of graduation against
a national average of 77%. Master’s degrees in the areas of science,
engineering, medicine and pharmacology have a 95% post-graduation
employment rate.
Pavia has been a city-campus since its foundation and even today
it offers students an experience unique in Italy and rare in Europe:
studying at 20 University colleges that are largely independent from
the administrative structure of the University.

Founded in Roman times with the name of Ticinum, it was the capital
of the Kingdom of the Lombards for over two centuries and this
fascinating legacy remains intact. The city centre is a maze of narrow
streets, ancient churches, elegant buildings and many fascinating
corners all coming alive day and night with students enjoying their
favourite meeting points.
Cultural life in Pavia is intense with 19 museums and collections (14
within the University), 2 cultural centres, 4 public libraries and 18
university libraries, 4 cinemas and theatres, 10 social-cultural meeting
halls, a musical college and 2 civic schools of music and arts.
Life in Pavia is both pleasant and affordable, particularly in comparison
with much higher housing and living costs in Milan and other urban
centres in Lombardy. Pavia’s campus offers a unique university
experience to students who can enjoy countless events, festivals,
exhibitions, concerts and sport activities, at all levels.

The college system: unique in italy
Pavia, city of sport
Pavia, like Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, has a unique College
system in Italy, dating back to the 16th century. Each of Pavia’s 20
colleges, that in total host approximately 2.000 students, has its own
particular history and opportunities to offer, including access to many
study abroad programmes and sport activities.
For Pavia, the title ‘European City of Sport 2014’ serves as the deserved
international recognition for our enduring excellence in sport.
The Institute for Advanced Study (IUSS) offers extra courses to the
best performing students from our colleges. These advanced-level
programmes for high achievers are organised by theme into four
different academic areas: Human Sciences, Social Sciences, Science
& Technology and Biomedical Sciences. Students who successfully
complete their studies at IUSS obtain an additional Diploma, alongside
their university degree.
College life aims at creating an open community where academic
achievements, traditional events, parties and sporting rivalries all play a
role. In college students can also build their first professional network.
Access to colleges is based on merit criteria and a parental-income
based fee system.
The University Sports Centre (CUS) promotes sport among students
enrolled in the university by offering a wide range of courses and
organizing championships and tournaments. With its teams, CUS
Pavia participates in national and international competitions such as
the World University Games.
Specifically, sport in Pavia means:
• Olympic and World Championship-level rowing
• Pavia-Oxford-Cambridge-Pisa rowing race
• University championships in the main team sports
• Intercollege tournaments
• Sports programmes specifically designed for disabled students
• Facilities designed for all students’ physical wellbeing, integrated with
university training.

The European Centre for training and research in earthquake
engineering (EUCENTRE) has developed the most advanced research
in Europe on the reduction of seismic risk.
The National Centre for Oncological Treatment (CNAO), the only
such research centre in Italy and only one of 5 worldwide, employs
technologies able to treat cancer with the use of protons and carbon ions.
The CNAO Foundation is also a research and development centre whose
activities range include clinical and radio-biological research with the aim
of providing continual improvement in the capacity to cure.
The Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Energy (LENA) is an
Interdepartmental Research Centre operating a nuclear reactor for
research activities, training and education.
With its technological parks, the University of Pavia supports
collaboration between researchers, territorial institutions and private
companies by providing support for new start-ups with the Mind the
Bridge Foundation.

Research
The international dimension
The University of Pavia has a tradition of top-level research and counts
three Nobel Prize winners among its full professors (Camillo Golgi,
Giulio Natta and Carlo Rubbia). Alessandro Volta, Albert Einstein,
Gerolamo Cardano and Ugo Foscolo have also taught here.
The University of Pavia is dedicated to preparing its students for lifelong
learning and the challenges facing them in an increasingly complex
and diverse world. To familiarize students and staff with the global
dimension of today’s international relations, more than 200 exchange
programmes are available at locations around the world.
The university, with its 17 PhD programmes, is an active promoter of
research in collaboration with the world’s most prestigious academic
institutions, favouring the expansion of links with local and global
industry.
The University has created 7 research centres based in Pavia and 21
in different sites in collaboration with other institutions, in addition
to 42 interdepartmental research centres that carry out ongoing and
interdisciplinary basic and applied research. It also supports start-ups
and spin-offs initiatives: 25 generated only in the past year.
Our research activities have resulted in 7 international patents (from
biology and physics to industrial engineering) in 2013. The University
has just started a new process of selecting flagship projects covering
all our disciplines and it has recently launched Universitiamo: the first
Italian Crowdfunding university project platform.

The international strategy of the University of Pavia sets out three clear
objectives in order to keep and strengthen its position amongst the
world’s leading research intensive universities:
• Embedding internationalization into our core teaching and research activities
• Creating sustainable recruitment of high quality international
students
• Developing and maintaining high quality strategic partnerships as

What students say about us
Ruslan Minich, 2nd year Master’s student in
World Politics and International Relations
“What you expect when you plan a visit to an Italian town is to
see ancient buildings, to experience grand medieval architecture,
and to enjoy being part of a unique and lively environment. Pavia
is this kind of town. The old University, its perfect location, the
good public services around town, and the availability of study
facilities offer the necessary conditions to facilitate the learning
process. Thanks to the work of the many students’ organizations,
entertainment is guaranteed: you will never be bored here! ”
Ahmad Abu Ja’ab - Graduate in Master
in International Business and Economics
MIBE program provided me with a good understanding of the
international business and economic concepts, and it also helped
me to enhance my communication skills in the English language
and to be flexible in dealing with different cultures, as the class is
composed by students of various nationalities.
Currently, I am a business analyst for Dual Risk Management; a
consultancy start-up firm specialized in operational risk. I joined
this company as intern two years ago to develop my thesis project
about country risk management. So far, I have been collaborating
in various projects of risk analysis and crisis management for
multinational companies operating in the Middle East. 10

University Fees and funding opportunities
The annual fee, calculated according to students’ family income,
ranges from € 500 to €3,200. Students from developing countries
(with legal study residence permits) qualify automatically for the
lowest fee bracket.
Private and public scholarships are offered yearly to national
and international students on merit criteria and parental
income. A special governmental agency, EDiSU, aims to give
the necessary support to those students who are “capable and
deserving, although under-resourced”, providing housing,
scholarships and other special subsidies.
