CHURCH of the RESURRECTION
Nr. 12 (3064) March 22, 2015
5th SUNDAY OF LENT - B
How can death lead to life and defeat
to glory? Jesus described his approaching
death on the cross as his “hour of
glory” (John 12:23) when he would be
“lifted up from the earth” and would “draw
all men to himself” (John 12:32). Jesus saw
his death on the cross as triumph over the
powers of sin and darkness. Jesus drew an
illustration of the “grain of wheat” to show
how this principle works in
God’s kingdom. Seeds cannot
produce new life by
themselves. They must first be
planted in the earth before they
can grow and produce fruit.
If we want to
experience the new life which
Jesus offers, then the outer
shell of our fallen sinful nature
must first be broken and put to
death. In Baptism our “old
nature” enslaved by sin is
buried with Christ so that we may rise to new
life through the power of Christ's
resurrection. Paul the Apostle describes this
death and rebirth in Christ as a “new
creation” in Christ. This process of death to
the “old fallen self” is both a one-time event,
occurring in our baptism, and a daily, ongoing cycle in which the Holy Spirit buries
us more deeply into Jesus' death to sin so we
might rise anew and bear great fruit for God.
There is a great paradox here. Death leads to
life. When we "die" to our selves - our
rebellious sinful nature and wilful rejection
of God's commandments - we receive God's
forgiveness and life-changing power and
grace to walk and live in the power of his
transforming love, righteousness (moral
goodness), and holiness. It is God's free gift
Sunday Missal
pg. 244;
of grace (his blessing and favor towards us)
and the transforming power of the Holy
Spirit that enables us to live as sons and
daughters of God.
How do I practically "die" to myself
so that Jesus Christ can live in me and
transform me into his likeness? It certainly
means that what is contrary to God's will
must be "crucified" or "put to death". God
gives us grace to say
"yes" to his will and to
reject whatever is
contrary to his loving
plan for our lives. Jesus
also promises that we
will bear much "fruit"
for him, if we choose to
deny ourselves for his
sake. Jesus used
forceful language to
describe the kind of
self-denial he had in
mind for his disciples.
What did Jesus mean when he said
that a follower of Christ must hate himself?
The expression to hate something often
meant to prefer less. Jesus says that nothing
should get in the way of our preferring him
and the will of our Father in heaven. Our
hope is not earth-based but heaven-bound.
St. Paul reminds us that "what is sown in the
earth is subject to decay, what rises is
incorruptible" (1 Corinthians15:42). Do you
hope in the Lord and follow with joy the path
he has chosen for you?
"Lord, let me be wheat sown in the
earth, to be harvested for you. I want to
follow wherever you lead me. Give me fresh
hope and joy in serving you all the days of
my life. Amen" (dailyscripture.net) R.R.
Create a clean heart in me, O God.

Pope: a society can be judged by the way it
treats its children
Pope Francis today turned his thoughts to the
countless children across the world who live in
poverty and need.
Addressing the crowds in St. Peter’s Square
gathered for the weekly General Audience, the Pope
continued in his catechesis on the family, focusing
this time on children.
Pope Francis said that children are a great gift for
humanity and for the Church. Recalling the many
happy children he met during his recent journey to
Asia brimming with life and enthusiasm, he said that
on the other hand he thinks of the countless children
throughout our world who are living in poverty and
need.
“A society can be judged by the way it treats
its children” he said.
The Pope said that children remind us that
from our earliest years we are dependent on others.
We see this in Jesus himself, who was born a child
in Bethlehem.
This – he said – is a precious
reminder of the fact the necessary condition to enter
the reign of God is to never consider ourselves selfsufficient, but in need of help, love and forgiveness.
He said that children also remind us that we
are always sons and daughters. This identity – he
said – reminds us that we have been given the gift
of life, that we never cease to be radically
dependent.
And speaking of the many gifts that children
bring to humanity, Francis said they challenge us to
see things with a simple, pure and trusting heart.
They have the capacity to receive and to offer
warmth and “tenderness”, to laugh and cry freely in
response to the world around us.
And he pointed to a child’s spontaneous trust in his
mother and father, in God, Jesus and in Our Lady
and said Jesus urges us to become like children,
since God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these (cf. Mt
18:3).
Pope Francis concluded inviting all to
“welcome and treasure our children, who bring so
much life, joy and hope to the world”.
“How sad and bleak would our world be without
them!” he said.
