INTRODUCTION
The Kensington and Chelsea Foundation
is a dynamic, young charity, poised to
tackle the next stage of growth.
Launched in 2008 with the aim of raising the awareness
of both residents and local businesses to the huge
contrasts that exist between the haves and havenots within our Borough. Over 400 local charities do
remarkable work to address these issues, but few are
known to our wealthier local residents.
Despite the difficult climate that has prevailed in recent
years, we have so far raised more than £2.6 million,
enabling us to make more than 300 grants to local
charities and community organisations.
In 2014/2015 alone we distributed £312,000 to 61
local charities. We have also successfully attracted the
enthusiasm and support of a wider number of local
people, willing to contribute both financially and
through volunteering their time and skills.
We have also established a significant new endowment
fund, thanks to support from a key local estate, which
will generate ongoing annual income for supporting local
charitable endeavours.

Founded in 2008 and led initially by a local resident,
Jeremy Raphaely, on his retirement from business,
over the past two years the Foundation has been led
by Diana Spiegelberg who has been instrumental in
taking the organisation through to the next stage in
its development. Having significantly developed its
potential, Diana is moving on to a new major role
within the sector and as such we are seeking to identify
another proven professional, with the vision, energy
and commitment to lead the organisation forward to
new heights.
The role will require a passion for developing individual
and corporate local philanthropy, and delivering
the dramatic benefits it can produce. It calls for
entrepreneurial creativity and determination, the ability
to think outside the box and break new ground.
The opportunities are enormous, but not without
challenge.

ABOUT US
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is one of
extreme contrasts. Whilst enjoying the highest incomes
and property values in the UK, huge inequalities exist
with some wards ranking amongst the nation’s most
deprived.
More than 400 local charities work tirelessly to address
these social and economic issues, bringing a wealth
of local knowledge and experience to bear on them.
But most of these charities are small and largely
unknown to local residents, many of whom are
generous towards national and international causes.
The Kensington and Chelsea Foundation
makes it simpler and more rewarding
for local residents and businesses to
support local charities that they wouldn’t
otherwise be aware of, strengthening the
community for everyone.
We have also been successful in adding leverage to
donor’s gifts and securing matched funds to enhance
their impact.

OUR TARGETTED CAMPAIGNS
BUSINESS & COMMUNITY TOGETHER
Summer Sparks
In September we launched Business & Community
Together, our extended corporate engagement
programme for businesses wishing to make a positive
impact locally. We have three year support from City
Bridge Trust to underpin this growing programme.
2014 saw the launch of our new Summer Sparks
initiative, which gives local young people the chance
to learn new skills and have new experiences over the
summer holiday period. Thanks to the generosity of
partners over 500 local young people benefitted from
additional services which ranged from youth clubs
staying open longer to a residential trip to the Isle of
Wight and a subsidised dance programme at Venture
Centre. Fundraising was enhanced by bringing additional
skills into local charities, for example a prominent high
end gym sent its personal trainers to lead sessions for
one of our community partners.

Winter Warmth
The Foundation’s Winter Warmth campaign is a local
solution for addressing fuel poverty amongst older
residents. Together we work with those who can to
donate their winter fuel payment to support more
vulnerable older residents, as well as raising awareness
of the challenges faced by many of the winter months
to the wider public in general.
In 2013/2014 we worked with Age UK K&C, Citizens
Advice Bureau and Nucleus Legal Advice Centre to
provide financial assistance to 88 local residents in need.

Local resident benefiting from a Winter Warmth grant
In November 2015 we launched the fifth Winter
Warmth campaign with an increased emphasis on
making younger residents more aware of the challenges.
Intergenerational work included practical Design &
Technology with local schools, culminating in inviting
isolated older residents “back to school” to judge the
work produced.

Working with The Volunteer Centre Kensington &
Chelsea, we tailor volunteering opportunities for
employees that match business objectives with local
needs. The Foundation is delighted to have three
key founding Business & Community partners,
Amey plc, DMG Media and Harrods.

Our dialogue with corporate partners helps them to
identify local charity partners in line with Corporate
Responsibility objectives and staff fundraising plans.
ABOUT US
FINANCIAL STRENGTH –
MAKING EVERY PENNY COUNT
As of 31st March 2014, the Foundation’s Reserves
stand at over £200,000, of which £125,000 is held in
unrestricted funds.
We have been extremely fortunate since inception
to have secured the support of a growing number of
corporations, trusts and foundations including local
family trusts, individuals and schools, to support both
our charitable and our core funds. We consider it both
a privilege and a responsibility to receive this support,
and believe that the potential exists locally to increase
it significantly over the coming years.
Every penny – 100% – of all charitable donations we
receive is ringfenced for local charities. We raise funds
for our core costs separately, including from our growing
network of Foundation Friends and Patrons.

Over the past 12 months The Kensington & Chelsea
Foundation has worked with an even wider spectrum
of local residents, businesses and schools to galvanise
more support than ever before for local charities and
community groups.
Our mission remains to make it easier and more
rewarding for local people to make a difference
close to home and we believe we’re doing just that.
By working collectively we can do more to address the
imbalances that exist on our own doorstep, especially
in relation to health inequalities, social isolation,
educational attainment and employment.

ROLE PROFILE
Title: Director
Hours: 35 hours per week
FUNDRAISING AND STEWARDSHIP
Salary: £55,000 per annum
• Ensure sufficient core funding for the Foundation’s
sustainable development
Reporting to: Board of Trustees
• Attract and develop new donors to support growing
levels of charitable distribution
As Director, you will be responsible for providing
hands-on leadership and building on the Foundation’s
success to date, for meeting its ambitious goals for
raising and distributing local funds, as well as achieving
a demonstrable impact on local lives by bridging existing
social and economic gaps.
MAIN TASKS
• Achieve the goals set out in the Foundation’s current
Business Plan and immediate priorities for strategic
direction agreed with Trustees, as well as reviewing
the Business Plan and agreeing future priorities in
consultation with the Board
• Present the Foundation’s public face, raising its profile
and driving its marketing and PR activities to engage
donors and secure their on-going support
• Work with the public, statutory agencies, businesses,
schools and local bodies and charities to build the
Foundation’s role as a key feature of the Borough’s
civic society
• Ensure that grants are awarded in line with the
Foundation’s policies, that they are appropriately
monitored and donors are adequately informed of
their impact
• Lead and inspire a small team, effectively and
efficiently managing the Foundation and its resources
to deliver a distinctive, high-quality service

• Build sound and lasting relationships with the
Foundation’s supporters to ensure their continued
engagement with the Foundation and charities it
supports
• Develop robust methods for demonstrating and
articulating the Foundation’s Impact
• Explore and develop new streams for income
generation, including through endowments
• Shape an enticing events programme that will appeal
to the Foundation’s Friends and Patrons and elicit
further support
• Lead themed campaigns that raise funds and
awareness for particular causes
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS
• Expand and develop relationships with opinion
formers and with the media to raise the Foundation’s
profile, building its role within the Borough
• Act as an ambassador for the Foundation, building
public awareness of its goals, activities and successes,
as well as developing good relationships with local
charities, ensuring that the Foundation’s supporting
role for their work is clearly understood
• Continue to develop the Foundation’s across social
media platforms to reach a wider audience
• Develop strategic alliances to ensure that the
Foundation is seen as a model of good practice
for place-based philanthropy across London

• With Board approval, develop the Foundation’s
strategy to be challenging but realistic, preparing
business plans, financial reports and policy
recommendations to support this strategy
MANAGEMENT
• Motivate and manage the Foundation’s team to
achieve the Foundation’s ambitious goals
• Be responsible for ensuring the secure and effective
use of the Foundation’s financial assets and its
database
• Ensure compliance with the Foundation’s legal
and charitable responsibilities
• Be aware of and minimise risks that may endanger
the Foundation’s reputation and success
• Report to, service and keep the Board appropriately
informed, consulting its members as necessary on
matters of strategic importance
• Recruit and manage volunteers as necessary to
deliver events and other initiatives
GRANT MAKING
• Promote and develop the Foundation’s grant making
policies and methods for assessing the effectiveness
of local charity partners recommending to the Board
such changes as may from time to time be necessary
• Ensure that grants are properly made and monitored
• Keep donors informed as appropriate of grants made
and their impact, in order to stimulate further interest
and engagement
• Maintain an open and creative dialogue with local
charities to ensure that the Foundation’s grant making
will be effective in addressing local need and achieving
real and lasting impact

• Keep abreast of and advise the Board regarding social,
political and economic developments, which might
affect the Foundation’s strategy

furtherance of the Foundation’s goals
