Most Precious Body and
Blood of Christ is Sunday,
June 7th. The Procession of
the Blessed Sacrament will take

The Example of St. Gianna
On May 13 the House of Representatives passed the Pain Capable Protection Act. It is
unlikely that this bill will become law; it still has to make it past the senate and then past
the veto of the most pro-abortion president in the history of the U.S. Nevertheless, this
bill’s passing is a small victory as it may be used to help leverage a Pro-Life candidate to
take the White House in 2016. Kudos to our Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler for
voting to pass this bill.
As it stands, the bill prohibits the intentional killing of an unborn child 20 weeks after
fertilization. That is unless the child threatens the life of the mother or if the child was
conceived in rape or incest against a minor. These un-Catholic caveats are often, if-notalways, added to any pro-life legislation.
Luckily, we in the Catholic Church can look beyond muddled
politics to the examples of Christ and the Saints when we
experience the never-ending difficulties and confusion that emit
from our culture. One such important Saint for us to consider
when weighing the merits of Pro-Life exceptions is St. Gianna
Beretta Molla.
A physician, mother, and loving wife, St. Gianna was twomonths pregnant, when a tumor developed on her uterus. The
doctor gave the saint three choices: an abortion, a hysterectomy
(which would have also killed her child), or surgery to remove
the tumor, which would save the child but put her own life at
risk.
St. Gianna chose the third, telling her doctor, “If you must decide between me and
the child, do not hesitate: choose the child – I insist on it.” Her daughter was
born, and one week later in excruciating pain, St. Gianna died after repeatedly praying
“Jesus, I love you. Jesus, I love you.” She was 39.
Christ laid down His life so we can live. What better example of Christ is there for the
laity than someone willing to lay down their life for that of their child? St. Gianna, pray
for us!
